RUSH: President Trump is saying that Iran is not living up to the terms of the treaty. They’re gonna be placing additional sanctions on Iran to block continued financing of terror and that they will be blocked from ever acquiring a nuclear weapon.

RUSH: And once again we get a steady dose of common sense from our president and from the White House.

RUSH: Here’s what basically happened with Trump and his announcement on the Iranian nuclear deal today. The president in his remarks vowed to end the Iranian deal himself if Congress won’t. He announced that he’s not going to certify that Iran is complying with the agreement. And, by the way, another campaign pledge met. Trump made a big deal of this in every rally he did in the 2016 presidential campaign.
And as far as Trump voters are concerned, this president has kept more promises and has stayed on path and on track as he said he would as any presidential candidate they can recall. And this is just another example.
“President Donald Trump announced Friday that he won’t certify that Iran is complying with the 2015 nuclear agreement, detailing a lengthy list of complaints and vowing to cancel the deal himself if Congress and U.S. allies don’t act to address his concerns about the accord.”
Now, all this means is the president is not acting unilaterally. This has always been a treaty that the Senate abrogated it’s involvement in by way of the now famous Corker Bill. The Corker Bill actually ended up doing the opposite of what the Senate is supposed do: ratify. The Corker Bill essentially authorized this before it had been negotiated. It was a giant cave-in to Barack Obama by Republicans in the Senate and it had us all in a tizzy here.
“Mr. Trump reiterated his opposition to the agreement reached among international powers, declaring his decision after a lengthy denunciation of what he called a ‘rogue regime’ run by radicals. ‘Iran is under the control of a fanatical regime,’ Mr. Trump said in a speech at the White House, adding it has ‘spread death, destruction and chaos all around the globe.'” And he’s turned it over to Congress. (imitating Trump), “Look, you guys have a role in this, and it’s up to you, the elected representatives of this country, to do the right thing on this.”
He threw it back in their lap. And if they don’t, he claims he will, keeping a promise and also upholding the tenets of the Constitution along the way. Now, there was a law passed in 2015 that gave Congress oversight of the nuclear deal. And under that law, “the president must tell Congress every 90 days if Iran is complying. If the president doesn’t, that triggers a 60-day process for lawmakers to weigh whether to reimpose sanctions under expedited consideration.
“Sen. Bob Corker (R., Tenn.), the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has been working closely with Mr. Tillerson on amending the law, the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act, known in Washington as INARA. Sens. Tom Cotton (R., Ark.) and Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) have also been involved in crafting the amended legislation.”
So, anyway, Trump wants sanctions reimposed. The Iranians are not abiding by it. He refused to certify, according to the legislation, which he has to do every three months. He refused to certify and that triggers Congress taking action. Now, I’ll guarantee you this. If Hillary Clinton had won the White House, this would have been recertified.
We would be hearing today how Iran is of our greatest new partners in the New World Order and how Iran is responsibly abiding by the terms of the deal and is moving forward with the modernization of their power grid, but we are fully confident that they are not on the way to producing a nuclear weapon any time soon. That’s what we would hear. Because that’s essentially what we heard from Obama. Iran can be trusted. Iran’s a bunch of good guys, been misunderstood. We had no right to tell ’em they couldn’t have nukes in the first place, Obama said.
