RUSH: Kerry Kennedy found not guilty of driving while impaired while she was driving impaired by a jury. She was found not guilty.

She crushed up some Ambien, she took it, and she was driving while impaired, barely awake, but she wasn’t. The jury said, “No, she didn’t mean it.” I saw a legal analyst on CNN today. “It wasn’t because she was a Kennedy! No, no, that had nothing to do with it,” he said. “It was a brilliant defense. She said she was on the way to work. Nobody gets drunk on the way to work! Nobody takes Ambien on the way to work.
“That allowed her to credibly say it was a mistake. She was headed to work and then the gym, and nobody crushes up a bunch of Ambien before they do that,” and the jury said, “You know what? That makes total sense!” This is the New York Times: “After nearly 20 months of buildup, the misdemeanor trial of Kerry Kennedy ended on Friday in a breakneck blur, as jurors took one hour to find her not guilty of driving under the influence of a drug.”

The first thing the legal beagle on CNN said was, “It’s not because she was a Kennedy!” Well, then there’s your reason. It was because she was a Kennedy. They get a pass.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Boy, you should see my e-mail!

I am being besieged by what I can only describe as the Ambien advocates. By that I mean, I can’t tell you the number of people saying, “Hey, I’ve taken it, and, you know what? She’s right. I don’t remember anything!” People told me some of the strangest stories. “Rush, they caught me nude throwing food on the floor at three in the morning after I’d taken it!” I got e-mails all over the place here, folks, about this.

I’ve never taken it, but I’ve got all kinds of people say, “Hey, hey, hey, hey! It’s totally believable what she said. She could not remember anything after she took it. She rear-ended that semi, whatever happened, it’s totally understandable, ’cause I’ve taken Ambien and people told me I’ve been doing weird things.” Okay, I’ll back off. I have no desire to make this program about Ambien. No calls about Ambien ’cause I don’t want them.

I just think it’s a great country when you’re driving under the influence and a jury says, “Nope, you weren’t.” It’s a great country.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: I just want to remind you on this Kennedy family and Ambien business. You might remember Patrick Kennedy and if the specifics of this. He was either late at night in Congress, in his office and heading home, or he was at home and told his girlfriend that he had to go to the office at, like, two in the morning. In the process, he ran his car into a concrete abutment out there in the nation’s capital and nearly took some people out.

I was thinking it was late at night or very early in the morning, under cover of darkness. I forget all the details. I didn’t bother to look it up during the break. I’m just doing this off the top of my head. Anyway, it was a devastating accident. He blamed Ambien for it. He blamed Ambien, and then I think went to rehab somewhere, Ambien rehab. Where do you…? Ah, never mind.

As I say, I don’t want to make a big deal this Ambien stuff ’cause it’s something that it’s got advocates. I can’t tell you the number of e-mails, “Hey, Rush, go easy here, man! I’ve taken it, too.” Okay. Okay, fine.
