It was only a matter of time. In the weekend edition of the New York Times, two influential doctors argue that medical school should be made “free” to aspiring doctors who don’t become specialists.

According to Obama healthcare advisors Peter Bach and Robert Kocher, large numbers of primary care doctors will be needed to “fix” heath care. But Doctors Bach and Kocher predict a 40,000 shortfall of primary care doctors by 2020. They say the $150,000 cost of medical school contributes to that shortfall; it pushes doctors into specialties where they can earn more money. So Bach and Kocher want to see medical school tuition waived – unless the student decides to specialize. Then he or she pays.

“Making medical school free,” they write, “would relieve doctors of the burden of student debt and gradually shift the work force away from specialties and toward primary care. It would also attract college graduates who are discouraged from going to medical school by the costly tuition.”

So. Even though Obamacare was rammed down our throats – heath care isn’t fixed! And now the “fix” means government has to take over medical schools. Like in Cuba.

But here’s my favorite line in the proposal: “We estimate that we can make medical school free for roughly $2.5 billion per year – about one-thousandth of what we spend on health care in the United States each year.” Free. For only two and a half billion a year, and more government control. Wow. Only a deal liberals could dream up. And actually say they believe it!
