Over the weekend, The New York Times ran a story applauding New York City. Here’s the first paragraph: “Congratulations, New York City, did you hear the news? Fire-and-brimstone predictions from across the country have been confirmed. This is officially the abortion capital of America. About 40 percent of all pregnancies in the city end that way, an average of about 90,000 a year.”

But happiness comes with a price. Despite the easy access, The Times says everything else surrounding abortion is “complex.” For one thing, there are “more kinds of procedures at more kinds of facilities” in New York City than almost anywhere else. “Women can get abortions in private doctors’ offices, at public hospitals or at clinics, some of which do not require an appointment.” That really makes life tough (death, too) –like trying to choose your favorite candy in a candy superstore.

Another “complexity” is the hardship some doctors experience. There are specialists who “occupy the outer edge of New York’s abortion landscape,” by performing abortions up to 24 weeks in. For a mere 15,000 bucks, one of those doctors says he removes the fetus using his hands, or “destructively,” using medical instruments. But, while he tries to avoid getting emotional about his job, some of his patients are “hostile” to him and his staff. Some won’t even look at him on abortion day,and that hacks him off. You see, it’s complex.

But despite that, congratulations, New York City. Every man, woman, and child, living or dead:Congratulations! You’ve made it!
