A student at New Hampshire’s Bedford High School objected to an assigned book critical of America’s economic system. In “Nickel and Dimed: On Not Getting By In America,” Barbara Ehrenreich documents her attempt to live on a minimum-wage salary. But what the student found disturbing, aside from the book’s multiple profanities, was a religious reference. The author describes Jesus Christ as a “wine-guzzling vagrant and precocious socialist.”

Dennis Taylor, the student’s father, said skrool officials were either careless in approving the book –or were “intentionally agreeing with Ehrenreich and taking the position that Jesus was a drunken bum.” After Taylor and his wife complained, the school district formed a committee composed of administrators, a teacher, and two parents to review the book. They concluded that”the book’s educational merit outweighed its shortcomings,” but said teachers should offer an alternative book for students whose parents object. Now the Taylors are asking the school board to step inand remove it. (Good luck with that.)

Meanwhile, the Obama Justice Department has filed suit against a Chicago school district that denied a Muslim middle school teacher three weeks unpaid leave to make a religious pilgrimage to Mecca. The teacher had completed a year of service when her first request was made in 2008. The teacher resigned after a second request was denied. Obama’s Justice Departmentwants her reinstated with back pay,and is also seeking compensatory damages.

Merry Christmas, folks, from Obamaville USA. Peace be upon him; praise be his name.
