Well, it’sa week later; results are still coming in. A congressional seat in eastern Long Island that was called for the Democrat is now in doubt.

A routine check of voting-machine memory cards found that, instead of losing to four-term Democrat Tim Bishop by over 3,000 votes, Republican challenger Randy Altschuler is slightly ahead. The head of the Board of Elections says the original numbers were reported by phone. “Somewhere within that process, some of these numbers must have been transcribed incorrectly,” he says. Yeah. Mistake. There are still 9,000 absentee ballots that haven’t been counted,so there’s opportunity for another “mistake”…which seem to alwaysbenefit the Democrats in these deals.

Meanwhile, another longtime Democrat, Congressman Solomon Ortiz of San Antonio, Texas has picked up a few votes after a bag of previously uncounted ballots mysteriously showed up in his district. But someone must have gotten the vote order wrong; the 30-year incumbent still trails his Republican challenger, Blake Farenthold, by over 700 votes –which means another bag of ballots has to show up from somewhere (and probably will).

Finally, this. Since Nancy Pelosi is running for minority leader, nher current lieutenant, Steny Hoyer, has decided he wants the position of minority whip. That post is currently held by James Clayburn of South Carolinawho, by all accounts, has done a good job. These are Democrats. Clayburn is black, Hoyer’s a connected white guy,so guess who will end up in the back of the bus again? It’s going to be Clyburn.

Even in defeat theDemocats can be counted on forcertain things.
