RUSH: ”Obama Spokesman Announces Interrogation Unit’ — President Barack Obama has approved creation of a new, special terrorism-era interrogation unit to be supervised by the White House, a top aide said Monday.’ This story, by the way, hit over the weekend as well. This is designed to push further his distance from the Bush administration detainee policies. ‘The new unit does not mean the CIA is now out of the interrogation business, deputy White House press secretary Bill Burton said. Burton said the unit will include ‘all these different elements under one group.” And now ABC has posted a story just before the program started, ”Obama White House v. CIA; Panetta Threatened to Quit.’ Tensions Lead to CIA Director’s ‘Screaming Match’ at the White House.’ This was over Panetta trying to protect the agency from actions taken by the White House.

Let me tell you, all this is, and I’ll tell you what it means, I really think this means that the public option in health care is dead. If it’s not dead, it is dying, it is close. If you go to the Sunday shows yesterday and listen to Schumer talk about how they bent over forwards, they bent over backwards to accommodate the Republicans but that they’re gonna have to go reconciliation. It’s not playing, Chuck-U. Everybody knows the Democrats can do this by themselves. You can blame the Republicans all you want, but it isn’t going to fly. The Republicans don’t have the votes to stop this. This is all about the Blue Dog Democrats in the House of Representatives. If you can’t get 60 votes in the Senate, you can’t blame that on the Republicans because you have 60 Democrat senators. And if you can’t get them all unified on this you can’t blame the Republicans for it. There’s nothing they can do to stop it, there’s nothing I can do to stop it, nothing you can — well, not in terms of power and votes. I think we have done a lot to impede it. But this return to the CIA and interrogation is an illustration of the tone deafness of this administration. It illustrates to me a mistaken belief on their part of why they won election in 2008.

What’s happened is, and remember I told you last week when I was in Los Angeles I spent a lot of time on these kook websites, like the Democrat Underground, the Daily Kos. These lunatics are just livid over the failure of the public option. They are livid that the White House floated a trial balloon via Kathleen Sebelius, the public option was not crucial, they were livid that Obama then backed it up and then of course they reversed the trial balloon, oh, no, the public option we can’t go forward without it and a bunch of Democrats went out there, Pelosi and so forth said so. But they’re losing their base on this. There’s a story at Salon.com by Glenn Greenwald, it’s all about how the left is being blamed for the problems when it’s really the moderates that are the problem. They’re really at each other’s throats here. The correct blame, the far leftists are destroying this, but the far leftists don’t like getting the blame so they’re hitting back and saying, no, no, no, no, it’s the moderates, it’s the media and so forth, they’re making us look like the bad guys. But it is these far, fringe, lunatic kooks that make up the Obama netroot base that are really up in arms.

The CIA stuff, this new interrogation, all it is, I’m telling you, trust me, don’t doubt me, all this is is an attempt to get these people back in gear because they hate the whole idea of an imperial US military more than they want the public option. They want Al-Qaeda to be portrayed as the good guys. They want the Taliban to be portrayed as the good guys. They want the US to be portrayed as the bad guys. Now, Obama and his team think that their position on Bush, Iraq, Afghanistan is a large factor in their election victory in 2008. They are mistaken about that, but that’s what they believe and so they’re changing the subject. They’re changing the subject from the debacle that health care has become; they’re changing the subject from the fact the public option is in big trouble, and they’re trying to rally the base now with a golden oldie, something from the Grooveyard of Forgotten Favorites. I mean Afghanistan and Iraq are Obama’s problem now, but they’re trying to go back, once again, and revive this notion that America was a torturing nation and that we’re not going to torture anymore.

I think this is an act of desperation, it is an attempt to change the subject, it’s an attempt to get his base back on his side again because they know — and I think this is true, it’s frightening, but it is true — the Democrat base, the far left radical lunatic fringe base, cares more about this country being humiliated militarily, foreign policy-wise, than they care about the public option. Obama’s gotta get ’em on his side. This CIA stuff, I mean pulling it out of a hat, what the hell is the deal here? He’s going to close Gitmo anyway, what are we talking about interrogation techniques? He’s already told Holder, the attorney general, to process a new policy that interrogation will also feature Miranda rights, that when we question these clowns in the battlefield they gotta be read their Miranda rights, they’re going to be given access to the US Constitution as criminals, not enemy combatants or prisoners of war. Why bring this all back? It’s pure politics, it’s nothing but a golden oldie and it shows how out of step they are.

This is all part and parcel of the campaign mode with Obama trying to get that base back. The American people are not fired up about interrogations anymore. In fact, the American people are not fired up about torture, and they never were to the extent that the Obama people believe they were. They’ve misread this totally. But anyway, having to pay attention to his lunatic fringe base is what is causing all of this new attention on Afghanistan and interrogation techniques.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: No, no, no. Folks, I’m serious, I checked the e-mail during the break. You gotta believe me on this. Obama’s fruitcakes on the left care much less about health care than making the United States the villain in the world. The United States as the world’s villain has been a rallying cry for the radical left in this country for as long as I’ve been alive. The whole point here is to give them, like, an aphrodisiac. Go ahead, now. Make the US the villain in the world again, and that will get his loony left to calm down and accept a watered-down version of health care. I really do think that that is what’s going on here.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Folks, it’s worse than I thought. I know my instincts are right on this, but it’s worse for Obama on health care than I thought. ‘Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. has decided to appoint a prosecutor to examine nearly a dozen cases in which CIA interrogators and contractors may have violated anti-torture laws and other statutes when they allegedly threatened terrorism suspects, according to two sources familiar with the move.’ I’m reading to you from the Washington Post. ‘Holder is poised to name John Durham, a career Justice Department prosecutor from Connecticut, to lead the inquiry, according to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the process is not complete. Durham’s mandate, the sources added, will be relatively narrow: to look at whether there is enough evidence to launch a full-scale criminal investigation of current and former CIA personnel who may have broken the law in their dealings with detainees.’

I am telling you the only reason they’re doing this is to distract everybody from health care. They said in Martha’s Vineyard, ‘We don’t want to be covered, leave us alone.’ They come out with the CIA torture and interrogation stuff, Holder follows suit by saying, ‘Yep, we’re going to do a prosecutor. We’re going to look into whether there really was in violation,’ and this is all about rallying Obama’s base, which he’s losing because Obama’s base would get much more excited seeing the US as the world’s villain than they care about health care. This is despicable! This is irrelevant. He’s closing Gitmo. This has nothing to do with now. This is all about distracting everybody. This is all about getting his base back, and it’s all about destroying United States national security in the process.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: This prosecutor that Holder has appointed? This is going to be like a malignant cancer itself. This is going to spread out, this is going to be the foundation for all kinds of investigations of the Bush administration, and that’s how they’re going to use this whole thing to distract people from the Obama agenda, since people don’t want it. Be vigilant, folks.
