Well, the announcement of Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination to the Supreme Court overshadowed headlines that North Korea tested an underground nuke and launched short-range missiles over the weekend –and the North Korea problem is nowhere near solved.
Aside from going back to the United Nations for another round of useless sanctions,Obama’s administration is at a loss. According to news reports, government “officials” are keeping mum about what options we have. When she was asked why North Korea should be expected to react positively to yet another UN resolution, our ambassador, Susan Rice, said that North Korea is “surprisingly in tune to international reaction.”(What a crock!)
Obama walked out to the White House steps and issued a declaration that the world must “stand up” to North Korea. He then vowed: “The United States will never waver from our determination to protect our people and the peace and security of the world.”Meanwhile, another set of “government officials”at the State Department said that Hillary Clinton was “engaged in intensive diplomacy.” (Well, that’s going to reallyhelp.)
Ambassador Rice,I don’t know what tune you’re listening to,but that pot-bellied dictator Kim Jong-il does not give a hoot what anybody thinks! He does exactly what he pleases!Despite all of Hillary’s “intensive diplomacy” –and despite the soaring presidential rhetoric –the world hasn’t ever “stood up” to North Korea, and there is no indication that we’re about to now.It will be up to us, as it always is…if we have the political will to face them down, that is. (With our tough words. Big whoop.)
