Well, the New York Times announced that, as required by law, it is notifying the federal government of plans to shut down the Boston Globe, the biggest newspaper in New England.

The move came after negotiations failed to produce concessions that the Times demanded from labor unions. “Industry observers” are speculating that the threat to shut the Globe isjust abullying tactic to squeeze more from the unions.

My friends, the Times and Globe have problems. The Globe’s circulation has dropped 14 percent since Obama’s election; it is expected to lose $85 million this year. Things aren’t good at the Times, either. They had to mortgage their new Manhattan headquarters, lay off another 100 newsroom employees, cut salaries, and borrow $250 million from a Mexican billionaire, Slim,to stay afloat.

And there are hurt feelings, too. Former Globe columnist Eileen McNamara recently accused the Times Company of treating the Boston Globe “like a cheap whore.” She took a shot at Little Pinch Sulzberger, who runs the Times, calling him “the boy genius whose crack management skills have helped drive the parent company of two of journalism’s most respected newspapers to the brink of bankruptcy.”

You union guys have a choice. You can call the Times’s bluff, hold out for job guarantees, and demand to keep your “living wage.” Or you can fold like a cheap suiton a cheap whore. Lying down, or standing up– either way, you’re screwed…by the New York Times. It’s a beautiful thing.
