RUSH: I mentioned mere moments ago, ladies and gentlemen, the AP Obama out with a story claiming that in 1981 John McCain ‘sat on the board of the US Council for World Freedom, an ultraright-wing group founded by Iran-Contra figure Major General John Singlaub.’ Singlaub did not found the group. This is a bogus charge. It’s an attempt to take the stench out of Obama’s association with Ayers. But let’s compare, shall we, John Singlaub to William Ayers. Singlaub is a great man.

He’s is ‘a highly-decorated former OSS officer and a retired Major General in the United States Army, and a founding member of the Central Intelligence Agency, (CIA). He was a joint founder of the Western Goals Foundation, a conservative private intelligence dissemination network, and is a contributing author to several books, the author of his autobiography as well as numerous articles. Singlaub was born in Independence, California on July 10, 1921. After graduating from Van Nuys High School in 1939, he attended the University of California at Los Angeles and received after graduation his commission as a second lieutenant of infantry on January 14, 1943. Singlaub was parachuted behind German lines in Europe in order to prepare the French Resistance fighters for the D-Day invasion during World War II.

‘He headed CIA operations in postwar Manchuria during the Chinese Communist [ChiCom] revolution, led troops in the Korean War, managed the secret war along the Ho Chi Minh Trail in Vietnam, and worked with the Contras in Nicaragua. …In 1977, while Singlaub was chief of staff of US forces in South Korea, he publicly criticized President Jimmy Carter’s decision to withdraw US troops from the Korean peninsula. On March 21, 1977, Carter relieved him of duty for overstepping his bounds and failing to respect the President’s authority as Commander-in-Chief.’ During his military service, Singlaub was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Silver Star, the Legion of Merit with two Oak Leaf clusters, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf cluster, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Purple Heart. His foreign decorations include the French Croix de Guerre with Palm and Bronze Star devices,’ on and on and on.

This is the man that AP Obama attempts to tar and feather McCain with, while claiming that Obama had no idea about William Ayers and guys that lived in the neighborhood and so forth. The media has shed its honor; it has shed its respectability; it has punted its reputation. You know, I have a theory. I think one of the reasons to explain this is if you look at what’s happening in the Drive-By Media. Look at all these newspapers that are laying off people, editorial positions. The LA Times just announced more. It is happening all across the country at major and small newspapers. Editorial staff are being laid off, being offered buyout options. Advertising revenue is down. Printed pages are down. Circulation is down; readership is down. It’s happening to many of the Drive-By television networks, and I think part of what’s gone on here is they’re just saying, ‘Okay, to hell with it! We’re going for broke. We’ve got nothing to lose anyway. Our industry is going to hell in a handbasket.’ It doesn’t explain it all, and I’m not trying to excuse their ideology, but it is shameless, it is unprofessional — and whatever representations they have as journalists, they have punted.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Where did AP get this story: ‘McCain Linked to Group in Iran-Contra Affair?’ AP Obama, Pete Yost, the discredited, shameless reporter. ‘Barack Obama has his William Ayers connection. Now John McCain may have an Iran-Contra connection. In the 1980s, McCain served on the advisory board to the US chapter of an international group linked to ultra-right-wing death squads in Central America. The US Council for World Freedom aided rebels,’ blah, blah, blah, blah. ‘The council created by retired Army Maj. Gen. John Singlaub was the U.S. chapter of the World Anti-Communist League, an international organization linked to former Nazi collaborators.’ If you go to the Daily Kos website two days ago, you will see this: ‘In 1981, John McCain sat on the board of the US Council for World Freedom, an ultraright-wing group founded by Iran-Contra figure Maj. Gen. John K. Singlaub.’ AP Obama gets its stories and its talking points from a lunatic fringe leftist website. AP even reported the error as advanced by the Daily Kos that Singlaub was the founder of the US Council for World Freedom. He was not.

Paul Begala used this on Meet the Press to say that this organization was affiliated with the World Anti-Communist League, the parent organization which the Anti-Defamation League said has increasingly become a gathering place, the forum, the point of contact for extremist racists and anti-Semites. So it all starts on the Daily Kos, Paul Begala picks it up for Meet the Press, says that Singlaub founded a group working with anti-Semites and Nazi racists. AP’s Pete Yost picks it up and runs it today. This is what has become of the mainstream media. They are slaves and prisoners to genuine lunatics, deranged, insane people who run websites founded in hate and rage and lies on the American left. The hate and rage, however, is not confined to the American left on their websites.
