Visitors to New York City’s famous Coney Island this year will find a new attraction: the “Waterboard Thrill Ride.” For one dollar, they can look into a “Guantanamo-like interrogation room.” Inside are two hooded figures– animated robots. When the lights come on, the “interrogator” robot leans over the other figure and pours water into his nose and his mouth, sending the “victim” robot into “convulsions.” A sign outside the display reads: “It don’t Gitmo better!”

So-called artist Stephen Powers is behind this so-called amusement. He told theAssociated Press: “Robot waterboarding” is a way to explore the issue “without doing any harm….It doesn’t take a great leap of the imagination to look” into the Gitmo-like room and say, “That’s really what’s going on? That’s crazy.”

Uh, Mr. Powers? On September 11th, 2001, just a few miles from your little spectacle, real people were not afforded a “leap of the imagination.” They leaped from real burning skyscrapers– ignited by real hijacked airplanes. For a few bucks more, why don’tyou create robots to simulate their deaths? Or create a display of terrorists’ victims who have been blown up, beheaded, or butchered? Why not robots representing people saved by our limited use of waterboarding?

Of course, you wouldn’t. Because the truth is less “amusing” to you than your anti-American “leap of imagination.” And you guys at Coney Island? You ought tobe embarrassed to have this schlock in your park –it’s giving the other smut you have therea bad name.
