Barack’s Brand of Christianity

by Rush Limbaugh - Mar 13,2008

RUSH: As I said right before the end of the previous hour, the Drive-Bys love, ladies and gentlemen, to report that Obama is a practicing Christian, not a Muslim. Well, isn’t it relevant to learn what kind of Christianity he chooses to practice? It’s relevant to me what kind of Christianity he chooses to practice, is it not? If this pastor didn’t leave him, would Obama still be sitting in the front pew? Does he denounce him? How many news stories have we seen over the years in the New York Times and elsewhere in the Drive-By Media insulting conservatives by saying, ‘Look what Falwell believes, and look what Pat Robertson believes, why, these are kooks.’ Remember all these stories? ‘Falwell, Robertson, these guys are nutcases, and that’s the Christian right,’ said the Drive-By Media, as they attempted to denounce people who were pro-life. So people were judged by the Drive-By Media according to what the Drive-By Media thought of their preachers. Why is this not happening with Barack Obama? Reuters, AP, they all went out there, and they uncovered every rock they could find about Mormonism to destroy Mitt Romney. They made sure that we found out what kind of Christianity Mitt Romney practiced, and Romney was forced to make a speech about it. Romney, they tried to drum him out of the campaign because of his religion. Not so with Barack Obama.

That professor — we had an audio sound bite in the first hour — that professor who compared JFK’s situation to Obama somehow missed the comparison between Romney and Obama, didn’t he? Romney’s a Mormon, said to be part of a cult. Professor didn’t say a word about that, Obama’s guy didn’t. Well, what do you call Obama’s church? What do you call his pastor? What do you call this religion that Obama practices, this hatemongering, racist religion. Will you call that a cult? Here’s the bottom line. We have not gotten honesty from Obama. He has not been honest about his church. He has not been honest about his pastor and his commitment over 20 years to both. He has been deceptive; he’s been nonresponsive; he’s been diverted on the few occasions he has been asked about it. He has not been honest with the voters; he has not been honest with the media, and of course the media is not too terribly curious to find out about this.

RUSH: We’ll start with Robert in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey. Robert, thanks, welcome to the show.

CALLER: How are you doing, Rush?

RUSH: Good.

CALLER: I got a couple things. One, it was the Christian right who brought down Romney, who went after him. It wasn’t the liberal left. And second —

RUSH: Ah, ah, ah, ah.

CALLER: Huh?

RUSH: The Christian right might not have voted for him. It was the Drive-By Media who kept harping on Mormonism and uncovering every rock to find out what kind of cult it was.

CALLER: Yeah, the — the — the media is run by the right. We all know that.

RUSH: Oh, well, this is off to a good start. Way to go, Snerdley. We’re off to a really good start, here.

CALLER: Anyway, we both have different opinion on the media.

RUSH: Yeah, I’m sure we do.

CALLER: The second thing is, I listened to the clip that you played of Obama’s reverend, preacher, or whatever?

RUSH: Pastor.

CALLER: It’s the first time I’ve heard him.

RUSH: Pastor, pastor, pastor.

CALLER: Pastor. And to tell you the truth, I don’t see where he’s wrong. If you could just point out where you think he’s wrong.

RUSH: You gotta be kidding.

CALLER: Tell me what he’s wrong about.

RUSH: You have got to be kidding!

CALLER: Explain it to me. Which part of do you think, which comment of his do you think he’s wrong on?

RUSH: Everything he said!

CALLER: You’re generalizing. Give me one.

RUSH: No. We’ll go back and play ’em.

CALLER: No, no, no, no!

RUSH: Oh, yes!

CALLER: Give me one.

RUSH: Oh, no! You asked for it, you got it. Grab audio sound bite–

CALLER: I’m asking you to point out which one.

RUSH: We’re going to listen to it. What does it matter?

CALLER: Because you don’t know what’s wrong with it.

RUSH: (laughing)

CALLER: You can’t point it out.

RUSH: Yes, I can.

CALLER: Point one out.

RUSH: ‘Jesus was a poor black man’?

CALLER: Is that wrong?

RUSH: Yeah.

CALLER: Why, you think he was white? You think Jesus was white?

RUSH: He was Semitic.

CALLER: Where was he from?

RUSH: He was Jewish!

CALLER: Are they darker than the rest of us?

RUSH: ‘Hillary never had to worry about being pulled over in her car as a black man driving in the wrong. I’m sick of Negroes who just don’t get it.’

CALLER: I think he’s right there, too. Go ahead.

RUSH: ‘Hillary is not a black boy raised in a single parent…’ This is hate! This is pure, unadulterated hate, and it is inciting hate in his congregation.

CALLER: I think you’re trying to insight hate.

RUSH: ‘The government gives black people drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three-strikes law, and then wants blacks to sing God Bless America? No. We’re going to do God (bleep) America.’

CALLER: Well, you know about those three strike laws and how it affects the poor, right, Rush?

RUSH: Oh, Robert, Robert, Robert.

CALLER: So far you haven’t convinced me that what he said is wrong. How about us, uh, middling — meddling in foreign affairs?

RUSH: Yeah, preserving US national interests.

CALLER: Preserving natural interests?

RUSH: I can understand exactly why, Robert, you think what you think because you’re just like this guy. You hate the country. You hate America, just like Jeremiah Wright. You should go to Chicago and try to get in on a couple of these sermons before the guy… Well, I think he’s given his last sermon. Well, you lose.

RUSH: I just learned something here about the Reverend Jeremiah Wright, the pastor to Barack Obama. Barack Obama’s book, The Audacity of Hope, that title was taken from a sermon written by Pastor Wright. At some point, he’s going to have to answer some questions about this. He’s getting away with leading two lives here, and the longer of the two lives is the one associated with this pastor and this church. When he decided he wanted to run for president, about a year and a half ago, that’s the new life that he gets, and it’s a life immune from any of his past. He comes forth as an empty vessel, saying empty things really well, and people are swooning and fainting. I don’t even think that’s happening anymore, though, is it? They’ll have to gin that back up, but they’ll do it.

RUSH: J. C. in Kokomo, Indiana. Nice to have you on the EIB Network, sir. Hello.

CALLER: Thank you. Hello, Mr. Limbaugh. This could be fun because I also have a hearing issue, but I gotta tell you that I nearly got physically ill listening to this pastor preach. I personally was very offended, and more than that, I was embarrassed as a Christian. I am really surprised that Church of Christ leadership on the international basis or something like would allow a pastor —

RUSH: This church is not part of the Church of Christ. This is an independent stand-alone. This is the Trinity United Church of Christ, but I don’t think this church has anything to do with the United Churches of Christ across the world.

CALLER: Well, I’m a preacher’s kid, and growing up and all through my adult life I have been taught to love thy neighbor, forgiveness, you know. If preachers are giving this leadership position, they will be judged more harshly. To me, I just saw a reverse Aryan Nation —

RUSH: What you’re looking at here, you know, this guy’s church is really nothing more than a vessel for him to practice his hatemongering politics. That’s what’s offensive. This guy was pure hate, lunatic racist. He’s angry, and he’s couching this as so-called sermons from the pulpit. He’ll mention Jesus and the Romans, throw it in there and give it some sort of religious context, but this guy’s preaching hate. He’s inspiring hate. To me there’s no wonder Michelle Obama thinks of the country the way she thinks of it if this is where they’ve been going to church for 20 years. I don’t know how long she’s been going to church at this place, but she’s obviously heard enough to hate the country like this guy does.
