The Last Temptation of Algore?

by Rush Limbaugh - Jun 7,2007

RUSH: John in Milwaukee, you’re next on the EIB Network. Hello.

CALLER: Rush, 15-year, daily listener dittos.

RUSH: Thank you, sir. I appreciate that.

CALLER: Of course. It’s been time well spent. Two TIME Magazine covers this past week will just add to — I know I can’t add to the host’s comments on the subject, but you spoke about religion and politics. This will clarify how liberals think about religion and politics. The first magazine cover was Mitt Romney. ‘Sure, he looks presidential, but what does he really believe?’ One week later, the very next —

RUSH: Taking a slap at his religion, his Mormonism, of course.

CALLER: Of course. The next cover, it’s a color picture of Algore looking off in the distance at, probably, a shaky future, and the caption is: ‘The Last Temptation of Al Gore.’ You know the reference.

RUSH: The Last Temptation of Algore?

CALLER: They were talking about his temptation to run.

RUSH: Yes.

CALLER: But they’re obviously quoting the Martin Scorcese film.

RUSH: Well, look, there was a time — and it’s long ago, but there was a time — back when TIME Magazine still had, oh, vestiges of good old Henry Luce, that it was a down-the-middle magazine.

CALLER: Mmm-hmm.

RUSH: The media has always been pro-Democrats, but… They’ve thrown all that to the wind now. It’s an agenda-oriented magazine just like every other Drive-By Media organ these days is.

CALLER: Well, I never read it.

RUSH: That’s because of me. Look, if I hadn’t come along the liberal media bias wouldn’t be as bad as it is. It would still be there. They’re pulling their hair out all over the place. They’ve always chosen sides, always. Now they’re making it obvious.

CALLER: They genuflect to Algore as the savior of the world, and if they ever ran a cover that said, ‘Obama, what does he really believe?’ or, ‘Hillary, what does she really believe?’ can you imagine the hell that would break loose in mainstream media?

RUSH: It would never occur to them.

CALLER: Of course it wouldn’t.

RUSH: It would never occur to them.

CALLER: Of course it wouldn’t. (laughing) Yes, I know that.

RUSH: You remember TIME Magazine ran this cover of me: ‘Is Rush Limbaugh Good for America?’

CALLER: Exactly.

RUSH: There was too much democracy out there, and the following week they did this cover story on Castro and his efforts to rebuild his lovely, island paradise nation. They called it ‘the lion in winter.’

CALLER: Well, let me certify on my behalf that you have been good for me, and I have converted a number of people to your radio show, and some of them like it, and some of them don’t. So…

RUSH: I appreciate that. I am a national treasure. I did not call myself that. I was called that by a couple people in e-mail, and I thought, ‘You know, if they’re going to honor me by calling me that in e-mail, then I’m going to recognize it.’

CALLER: Of course.

RUSH: That’s absolutely right. John, thanks so much.

CALLER: It’s a great honor talking to you, Rush. Take care.

RUSH: Thanks very much. Have a great weekend.
