Harvard Play Re-enacts Abu Ghraib

by Rush Limbaugh - May 12,2005

RUSH: “Testifying at the January trial of a U.S. soldier accused of prisoner abuse at the American prison in Abu Ghraib, an Iraqi detainee, Hussein Mutar, said ‘the Americans were torturing us like it was theater to them.’ Tonight at Harvard, Abu Ghraib will become theater, as students re-enact the prisoner abuse in a 90-minute university-funded performance that, according to the show’s Web site, is designed ‘to inflame.'” So Harvard is going to pay for a play on the Abu Ghraib abuses.

They’re going to reenact Abu Ghraib as theater. “Abu Ghraib will open…” Well, first, “Currun Singh, a 19-year-old Kuwaiti-born sophomore from Honolulu who wrote and is directing the play said, ‘It was important to spice up the theater scene here at Harvard.’ Abu Ghraib opens with a handcuffed male actor clothed only in a black hood holding his genitals while standing atop a three-foot box placed center stage.

Later in the show the character of Army specialist Charles Graner, portrayed by freshman Rob Salas, 18, urinates on a detainee who has been tied to a door, although Mr. Salas said he only stage urinates with his back to the audience.” Well, at least they have some sensitivity there. “‘We haven’t censored ourselves,’ Mr. Singh said. ‘The prisoners get roughed up a bit, but the play for the most part relies on stylized violence.’ Xin Wei Ngiam, the 20-year-old Singapore native who is the play’s producer, describes the play as ‘a call to action for human rights.’ She said, ‘We tried very hard to make it nonpartisan.'” Nonpartisan, eh? A nonpartisan play reenacting Abu Ghraib at Harvard funded by the university itself.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Fred in Denver, you’re next on the EIB Network. Hello.

CALLER: Mile high dittos, Rush.

RUSH: Thank you.

CALLER: You know, I was listening to your story about the Harvard reenactments and it occurs to me those students are really missing the boat. They could reenact some of Saddam’s atrocities perhaps by throwing some professors off the roof.

RUSH: Ooooh, I like this. Yes, we can simulate mass graves and put the faculty in. That would be a great place to put the chairman, the president, Lawrence Summers, bury the guy for his comments about women.

CALLER: Sure. There could be a side benefit to this. As I was on hold it occurred to me that Harvard may have pension liability just like United did.

RUSH: (Laughing.) This is an excellent point. Here they are, they’re going to reenact Abu Ghraib. Why not reenact what Saddam was doing?

CALLER: Yeah.

RUSH: Far worse than whatever happened at Abu Ghraib, however bad Abu Ghraib was. By the way, folks, I have to tell you something. I’m going to anticipate a question I’m going to get in the e-mail. I know what you people are thinking, because I know you people, too, like every square inch of my glorious naked body. You’re going to say, “What about you, Rush? What about you when you go to charity events, huh?” I’m going to tell you. I’m going to one Monday, and the one I’m going to Monday is typical. Every year I go out to St. Louis. Joe Buck, a friend of mine has a charity golf tournament for the St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and, you know what? Not only is there no compensation, I’m paying my own expenses to get there. There will not be a bill submitted to the Joe Buck golf tournament, nor his hospital, nor the foundation or anything else that puts this on.

I may be one of the few people that shows up without submitting expenses. It’s not going to cost them a dime to get me there, and whenever I do any charity things like this, I don’t charge the charity. If I decide to go because I believe in it, I cover the costs myself. Now, these Hollywood types showing up for Hillary, demanding all this lavish treatment such as the specific kind of jet and who knows what else? What kind of hotels they’re demanding to stay in out there the whole time? I mean, it just tells you what the game really is all about. Here’s Ryan in San Diego, Ryan, welcome to the EIB Network. Nice to have you with us.

CALLER: Hi, Rush. Mega dittos from the United States Navy here in San Diego.

RUSH: Thank you, sir.

CALLER: You know, I just, you know, when you brought up the Abu Ghraib play at Harvard, it just really sparked me, because here the United States military is trying to really put our foot down in Iraq and everything, and we’re making martyrs out of these people. You know, I’m sorry for what happened, but these guys, they don’t show any mercy to our soldiers.

RUSH: I know. But get used to it. This is the American left, Ryan. You know that. You’re in the Navy. You know what dealing with the American left is all about. Try this. You know Michael Isikoff? There was some sort of an event, an attack in Jalalabad, Afghanistan recently where a number of people were killed and one of the reasons that the attack took place is because some of the militant Islamists that still pockmark Afghanistan heard that at G’itmo, one of the investigation techniques was to put the holy Koran on top of a toilet — and this infuriated some of these militant Islamic Jihadists and so the word leaked out via a report in Newsweek, via Michael Isikoff and one of his buddies that the holy Koran was placed on a toilet, I think in one case the holy Koran might have been simulated as flushed down the toilet.

So this gets reported and it resulted in four people getting killed. I think it was four people getting killed in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, and so this is what Ryan is talking about. Here you have these dunces, these literal dunces, these future Nobel winners like we discussed yesterday, these wackos that can’t even figure out — and get Nobel economic prizes — how to invest their own money; here we have these future dunces at Harvard now doing a playing on the travesties of Abu Ghraib and you know this is going to get back to the people in Baghdad, the insurgents and this sort of thing. It’s just typical. These people hate the country, folks. I’m telling you: there’s an anti-American bias in the American left. It’s always our fault. We’re the focus of modern evil in the world today, and they’re going to take this country down in that regard if it’s the last thing they do.
