Don’t Dump Dan

(Clearing throat) Would you like to be a journalist? A world-famous journalist, a celebrity journalist on the A-list for fashionable cocktail parties, Broadway theater openings, movie premieres? Well, here’s your chance — and you don’t even have to go to journalism school! You don’t even have to take journalism courses. You don’t even for that matter have to be able to write. All you have to do is fall on the sword. Fall on the sword for Dan Rather. CBS, in cooperation with Viacom and 60 Minutes II is looking for a fall guy to take the hit for Dan Rather.
A fall guy, a fall gal, it doesn’t matter. Fall black, fall brown, fall green, fall homeless person, it doesn’t matter. If you can say, “It’s my fault. I goofed. Mea culpa. I’m the one that made Dan look bad. He’s not responsible, I am,” and if you can say it more believably than any other contestant you have an opportunity to be the next most trusted journalist at CBS and your own segment on 60 Minutes. Now, I do this because have you noticed in the press they’re now starting to dump on this poor producer? It’s just eeeeeever so subtle, ladies and gentlemen, but they are starting to dump on this producer — and, you know, Rather he’s so busy, and so much comes his way, somebody didn’t do their due diligence. It’s not Dan’s fault. You can see this being alluded to on television. I told you yesterday how this stuff works, how the sausage is made. The producers are the ones who go out and do the reporting in many cases. It happened to me anyway when 60 Minutes did a profile of me. I never saw the actual reporter until it was time to do the last 15 minutes of the interview, 45 minutes of the interview. Most of the interview was done by the producer and this was a two-month process and I saw the reporter for half an hour. So I know how this works. So if they’re looking for a fall guy and if you think you can handle it and credibility, just get hold of Kinko’s in Abilene, Texas: the fastest track to Dan Rather.
