“Drinking coffee can make the mind go blank, according to new research from the UK. Caffeine widely held to make people more alert, can make the mind go blank or struggle to switch between trains of thought. It could help the brain process information rapidly but it interferes once the brain tries to switch between subjects, researchers claim. Volunteers were split into two groups, one give an 200 milligrams of caffeine, the equivalent of a couple cups of coffee. They then answered a hundred questions after reading ten priming words with between two and eight of the words sounding similar to the answer. Caffeine appeared to help participants find the correct answers with primed with many similar sounding words. But when they were more unrelated priming words, they suffered more tip-of-the-tongue moments than those who had not had coffee.”
It’s actually Italian research published in Behavioral Neuroscience. So we can’t win. Coffee can make the mind go blank, but that’s bad for you, so we shouldn’t drink coffee. When your mind goes blank we’re going to make you quit cigarettes; you’re going to become a mindless schizophrenic — and then to close the loop, “Scientists have found a genetic link to bad behavior.” Uh, ladies and gentlemen, sometimes I think these scientists are in cahoots are trial lawyers. They do these studies that are never ending, funded we guess by government and all we end up is nobody is ever responsible for what they do. Now bad behavior is genetic. It could be related to the fact that you do or do not use nicotine, or coffee, but regardless, it’s not your fault, so we can sue whoever it is that makes you do bad things. We can sue Big Tobacco. We can sue Big Coffee Bean. We can sue whoever because whatever you do is not under your control. We are robots, ladies and gentlemen, who do not do anything because of our own volition.
BREAK TRANSCRIPT
RUSH: Chris in Binghamton, New York, you’re next. I’m glad you waited, sir. Welcome.
CALLER: Rush, how’s it going?
RUSH: Couldn’t be better, sir.
CALLER: Well, Rush you got me responding to a study you brought up at the end of last hour that people really aren’t responsible for their bad behaviors, and it’s something that might help Mr. Berger out in these times. But I think that line of thought is incomplete that, you know, people aren’t responsible.
RUSH: Well, now, wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait just a second now. I didn’t say this. This is a story — some research somewhere; I don’t have the story right in front of me — but they think they’ve found a gene or a genetic link to bad behavior and all I said was that this has to be something drummed up by trial lawyers in association with these doctors and scientists as a result of government grants, because it allows you to continue to sue others who are responsible for others’ bad behavior. It’s a continuing trend. Nobody is responsible for what they do. Everybody is a victim of somebody else, and if the victim is big enough we could sue ’em out of existence.
CALLER: Yes, yes, but see that is where it’s incomplete. If someone had a bad behavior and they want to sue big tobacco, McDonald’s, alcohol, whatever it is, well, how could you sue somebody? Aren’t they also just a genetic thing? The person who can go up in nicotine, the person that developed the alcohol or did the coffee —
RUSH: No, no, no, no. No, no. This is a great question, a little brilliant question, but it shows why I am terribly needed here. A corporation is not a person. Corporation —
CALLER: Corporations are run by people, are they not?
RUSH: Well, they might be, but the corporate entity is a piece of paper filed with the government, and it charters the corporation in certain ways. The corporation basically, in the eyes of researchers and trial lawyers, is a bank. It is a bank with an open window, and so, yeah, you can say — and besides that, a corporation makes, produces, distributes, sells a product. In the case of Big Tobacco. Big Tobacco is not a person.
CALLER: Hmm. Okay. Well, then I guess Halliburton is in trouble.
RUSH: (Laughing.) Halliburton ought to change their name. Halliburton ought to change their name to “the Dick Cheney Company,” to just be done with it. Yeah, I don’t know how far this is going to play out. Obviously I just am suspicious of this, folks. I mean, you know, we talk about personal responsibility in the program quite a bit, and if they want to try to link genetics to it, then nobody commits crime is actually responsible for it, nobody mistreats anybody is responsible for it, plus there’s a lawsuit angle there.
