RUSH: The purpose of this poll, ABC News\/Washington Post poll<\/a>, is to say that while Obama doesn\u2019t do very well public opinion-wise on handling the border crisis, it\u2019s really bad for the Republicans. Oh, man, you ought to see it. Oh, it is so bad for the Republicans. I mean, the people of this country just totally disapprove of the way the Republicans are dealing with it.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m saying, “What are they doing? What are the Republicans doing about it?” <\/p>\n

I\u2019ll tell you what\u2019s noteworthy about the Republican numbers in this poll. It\u2019s very simple. There are almost as many Republicans as there are Democrats in the poll who disapprove of the way the Republicans are handling this. And if the Republicans in this poll were more supportive, if they were traditionally supportive of their own party, as Democrat respondents are, then we wouldn\u2019t have the disparity that we have. I think that\u2019s somewhat noteworthy because the reason why, it\u2019s real simple. This isn\u2019t gonna get reported, and even when I say it it\u2019s not gonna be accepted by the people that should accept it and face the news and believe it. <\/line><\/p>\n

The reason this poll looks bad for the Republicans is there isn\u2019t any real opposition to Obama\u2019s immigration agenda. And that\u2019s why the Republicans are upset with their own elected officials, is because they are seen to be on the same page with Obama. There is no opposition. And despite the news we had yesterday, this news has not escaped the little sandbox that it was in yesterday, the fact that immigration reform as a campaign issue has sizzled for the Democrats. I\u2019m sorry to be repetitive, for those of you who were here yesterday but I need to go through this again for people that were not here yesterday who are here today. <\/p>\n

There was a story yesterday<\/a>. It was in TheHill.com, which is an inside-the-Beltway, pro-Obama publication for all intents and purposes. It was a story about how comprehensive immigration reform (i.e., amnesty) has now fizzled as a campaign issue for the Democrats in the 2014 midterms. Now, my problem is I don\u2019t think it ever was a slam-dunk issue for the Democrats. <\/p>\n

I think we were being defrauded by media and Democrats alike trying to create that image that this whole country has always wanted amnesty and massive immigration reform when it never has. There\u2019s never been majority support for that. But it was said that if the Republicans didn\u2019t get on board amnesty, they didn\u2019t have a prayer.<\/p>\n

They were never, ever gonna win the White House again. Chuck Schumer out there personally worried, believe it or not. Yeah, Chuck Schumer was very worried. He\u2019d say, “If you Republicans do not sign onto comprehensive immigration reform with us, you\u2019re never gonna win the White House again,” as though Chuck Schumer cares about us winning the White House, as though he actually wants us to. <\/p>\n

He doesn\u2019t. <\/p>\n

<\/a>So the Republicans and the Chamber of Commerce, the Republican consultant class, the inside-the-Beltway corporatist class were all signing on. “Gotta do amnesty, gotta do comprehensive immigration reform — and if you don\u2019t, you don\u2019t have a prayer. If you Republicans don\u2019t sign on to this, you\u2019re finished.” The president the Chamber of Commerce told Republicans, “If you don\u2019t sign on to this, you may as well not even nominate a candidate for 2016 \u2019cause you\u2019re not gonna get any money from us.” <\/p>\n

Lo and behold, yesterday we get a story saying the whole issue has “fizzled” for Democrats. How can that happen, if it\u2019s such a slam dunk? If the American people and if all parties involved are so desirous, so seriously intent on getting comprehensive immigration reform, how can it dissipate as a winning issue for the Democrats? Well, it\u2019s because of what\u2019s happening at the border. <\/p>\n

It\u2019s because of a massive influx of 300,000 or 340,000 or whatever the number is since April. It\u2019s because what\u2019s happening at the border is providing a little snapshot of what comprehensive immigration reform will mean. Now when polls are taken, “Oh, the Democrats are in trouble if they stand for that.” My point yesterday (well, I\u2019ll repeat it again) is it\u2019s never been the slam-dunk issue for Democrats that we\u2019ve all been told it was.<\/p>\n

It certainly never has been the only thing Republicans can do to save themselves. It was a trick. If the Republicans had signed on to this and made comprehensive immigration reform happen, that\u2019s when they would never win the White House again. This poll in the ABC News\/Washington Post, I think, demonstrates just that. <\/line><\/p>\n

When you have just as many Republicans as Democrats disapproving of the Republican position on immigration, whatever that is — and, by the way, about that. For anybody (I\u2019m talking poll respondents) paying attention, the vast majority of Beltway Republicans are pro-immigration reform. If any of these idiotic poll respondents are paying attention, and if they like what Obama\u2019s saying, they ought to like what the Republicans are saying.<\/p>\n

Because both are saying the same thing: “We need comprehensive immigration reform, and we need it now, and we need it before the November elections.” The Republican leadership is all for it. So how in the world do we get a poll that says there\u2019s massive disapproval of the Republican position, when it\u2019s largely identical to the Democrat position among the leadership?<\/p>\n

Now, you have Ted Cruz and you have Mike Lee. You have some renegades in the Republican Party who are not, but they\u2019re not part of the leadership. As far as the leadership is concerned, it\u2019s pro-immigration reform, pro-amnesty. So why the difference here? And when you look and you find that as many Republicans are critical of the Republican position on immigration reform as there are Democrats, it is simply because the Republican Party has not provided any real opposition to what Obama is doing. <\/p>\n

Let\u2019s say the last six weeks or two months, the Republican Party had been vocal daily about opposition to comprehensive immigration reform at the same time this onslaught\u2019s taking place at the border. You\u2019d have an entirely different poll result. As it is, six out of 10 disapprove of Obama\u2019s handling of the border crisis. That is a legitimate headline for this poll: “Six out of 10 Disapprove of Obama\u2019s Handling of the Border Crisis.”<\/p>\n

But it\u2019s worse. It\u2019s 66% disapprove of the Republicans. Oh, save the day! And so that becomes the narrative. “Yeah, yeah, a lot of people disapprove of Obama\u2019s handling, but it\u2019s even worse for the Republicans.” Bingo! We\u2019ve got our template for the day. We got our hook for every news story of the day, and every discussion topic show on cable news tonight. Of congressional Republicans, 66% disapprove their handling of the border crisis. Only 23% approve. Sixty percent disapprove of Obama.<\/p>\n

So there you have it: 66% anti-Republican, 60% anti-Obama. “It\u2019s even worse for the Republicans. Oh, yeah!” And of course the Drive-Bys celebrate and they applaud and they have a party. Now, Noah Rothman who writes about this at Hot Air has a legitimate question: Why did the pollster even think to ask how respondents think or feel about how the Republicans in Congress are handling this? They had nothing to do with it!<\/line><\/p>\n

So why ask?<\/p>\n

You\u2019ve got a president exercising executive action, executive orders every day. You\u2019ve got a president saying (impression), “If they\u2019re not gonna do their job, well, I\u2019ll just do it! I\u2019m not gonna sit around here and wait.” So you got a president saying, “It doesn\u2019t matter what Congress does. I\u2019m gonna do what I want to do.” So what does it matter? Why throw this question in there? <\/p>\n

Well, you throw this question in there hoping and praying that you can show more unhappiness with the Republicans on this than you can the Democrats. So they got what they wanted, and bingo! There you go. However, if you dig deep, you will find the president\u2019s approach\/the president\u2019s behavior on this is in a far worse position with the American public. Throw out the Republicans. It doesn\u2019t matter.<\/p>\n

Six out of 10 disapprove of the way Obama is handling this.<\/p>\n

If the Republicans had provided some real opposition to this, if they\u2019d been on record opposing comprehensive immigration reform rather than trying to — I don\u2019t know — be like hangers-on on the Democrat Party on this, then they might have a different result of the poll. But it\u2019s all made up. Again, it is a poll being used to make news, to provide the Drive-Bys with a template and a hook for the entire day so that they can shield Obama from what is actually very horrible news for him.<\/p>\n

When has he had 60% disapproval on anything? He\u2019s got it in this. But they can bury it with their Republican number at 66%. <\/p>\n

RUSH: Just fine, sir. Thank you.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I think the deal with the Republicans is basically that they\u2019re not, you know, upset because there\u2019s no comprehensive immigration reform or anything like that. And the numbers that you\u2019re quoting there, I think, look at the fact that people are upset because they\u2019re not shutting it down fast enough.<\/p>\n

RUSH: That\u2019s exactly right. That\u2019s exactly why the disapproval for the Republicans in this ABC News\/Washington Post poll is so high. Of course the Post is not gonna tell anybody that. The narrative is, the template is, “Yeah, people are unhappy with Obama, but they\u2019re even angrier at the Republicans, \u2019cause they won\u2019t get on board,” which is a crock. You\u2019re exactly right. <\/p>\n

The Republican respondents in this poll are upset with the Republicans because they are not opposing any of this. Again, I hearken back to the news yesterday. Comprehensive immigration reform as an issue has fizzled for the Democrats<\/a>. Now, why? If it was such a slam dunk — if standing for, if being for, if making happen comprehensive immigration reform were the ticket, if that\u2019s what every politician had to do in order to win — how the hell did it fizzle in just a couple of months? How does that happen?<\/p>\n

The only way it can happen is if it were never true in the first place, which is my claim. I don\u2019t believe for a moment that the only way a politician, particularly Republicans, could ever win anything again was to finally come out and be pro-amnesty. That\u2019s just a crock. If it\u2019s that big, if it means that much, if it\u2019s the ticket, it can\u2019t “fizzle.” Yet it did in two months.
