RUSH: This is Jay in Denver. Jay, thanks for the call. Great to have you here. Hello.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Thank you, sir. Longtime listener, first-time successful caller. I wanted to make a couple comments about your book, Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims<\/a>.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yes, sir. Thank you.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019m sorry. I\u2019m kind of nervous. It\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve been able to get a hold of you. I don\u2019t want to put down in any way your work as a radio talk show host, but I think with the books you\u2019ve found your true calling, sir.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Wow. That\u2019s a really nice thing to say.<\/p>\n

<\/a>CALLER: And the reason why I say it is because I\u2019ve been trying for many years to get my children interested in history, and I read the first book with them, and they loved it. But then this time when we went to the store to get a birthday present for my daughter, I found your second book and I bought it, and my girl read it in a day.<\/p>\n

RUSH: In a day? Wow.<\/p>\n

CALLER: And then my little boy, my 9-year-old boy, he sat down and read it in a day also and he\u2019d never been a big reader, and he\u2019s reading it right now for the second time.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Now, when you said at first that you sat down and read with him, do you read it to them or do they read it themselves and you\u2019re just with them reading along?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, the first book I read to them. But this one they read themselves.<\/p>\n

RUSH: And how old did you say they are, 9 and 11?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes, sir, 9 and 11.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, Jay, this is fabulous. I don\u2019t know what to say. I\u2019m the best at radio there is, and you say there\u2019s something I\u2019m better at, I mean, I\u2019m speechless. (laughing)<\/p>\n

CALLER: I wanted to say that I think with radio you touch adult listeners. It\u2019s very hard to change their minds and it\u2019s very hard to influence them, but the way that you\u2019re influencing kids and you\u2019re counteracting all the junk that they get out in the world, and I think it\u2019s really going to change lives even more than your radio show.<\/p>\n

<\/a>RUSH: Well, again, let me tell you how much I appreciate, and why, what you\u2019re saying. I know that kids are never gonna listen to a talk show like this. They\u2019re not gonna be interested in this kind of thing. It\u2019s gonna be above them and in some cases parents wouldn\u2019t want their kids to. You never know the subjects that are gonna be discussed. And yet I want to reach \u2019em. I wish they did listen. I wish there was a way a program like this was interesting to kids. <\/p>\n

So my wife had the idea, Kathryn had the idea of doing this as a way of expanding the demographic, per se, expanding the audience but actually with a sense of a mission, to actually reach young people and tell them the truth of the country\u2019s founding in a way that made it enjoyable and exciting to learn about it. Because, you\u2019re right, history, to me it\u2019s fascinating. To a young kid it\u2019s the past, and it\u2019s this and that, it\u2019s not relevant, and, depending on how it\u2019s presented to them, it\u2019s very boring. So that\u2019s what we try to tackle here. And with your assessment of the success, you\u2019re validating the way we went about it and I just can\u2019t thank you enough. This is over-the-top great.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, I\u2019m the one that has to thank you. My girl told me yesterday that she loves history and that\u2019s the first time I\u2019ve heard anything like that from her.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, man, I tell you what, I want you to hold on, and I want to send you and your kids a bunch of stuff here from the Adventures of Rush Revere collection. A couple of Ted-Tea Bears and the audio versions of both books, and I\u2019ll tell you what. You know what? I\u2019ll tell you what we\u2019re gonna do here, Jay, in the event — ahem — that there is another one, you will be among the first to get a couple copies, if there is another one, ahem. So, Jay, hang on, appreciate it very much. Tell your kids thanks from all of us as well. <\/p>\n

I don\u2019t know how to properly thank people. It just doesn\u2019t seem like it\u2019s enough to say “thank you.” I don\u2019t want to go overboard on it, but I want to properly reflect my appreciation for it, \u2019cause it is something that I\u2019ve never done before and it was a challenge. It is an ongoing challenge to find ways to write the truth in history in a way that a kid would want to devour it and want even more of it. So, Jay, don\u2019t hang up.
