TODD: You have Democrats preparing a $1.3 billion so-called loan forgiveness for people who went to college and took out debt. Folks, there\u2019s no such thing as a loan forgiveness. It\u2019s a passing of the loan on to shoulders of people like me who did not go to college. And, as a matter of fact, though he didn\u2019t go to college (and he clearly didn\u2019t need it), Rush knew what starting adulthood $100,000 in college debt meant to people economically. But he also understood it psychologically. He was always ready to explain why leftists want to see people on the hook for college debt.<\/a><\/p>\n

RUSH: This has been something that I have expected the Democrats to do. I predicted they would. I\u2019ve been kind of fearful that that was gonna be a big card that they were gonna play. American income, when it\u2019s been charted, has always been charted in fifths or quintiles. So you would have one group that say makes $100,000 or more, then the next group 75 to a hundred, 50 to 75, 25 to 50, and zero to 25, whatever.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

But those are the arbitrary numbers. But you have those five quintiles. They would track people in each of those segments as they grew older and track their movement. “Did they move into different levels of income, and how did they do it?” And they found that a college education was one of the fundamental requirements to upward mobility, and middle-class parents became obsessed with their kids going to college, no matter what it cost.<\/p>\n

They pursued scholarships. They pursued anything they could to get their kids to school. Just like health care. At some point the cost of getting educated became so high that the average middle class family could not afford it in their annual budget. They had to find supplemental assistance. It got so bad because there was never any pressure on universities to keep tuition at an affordable level, just like there\u2019s never been any pressure on health care.<\/p>\n

Here came the old student loan, and the student program, and it enabled more and more people to quote\/unquote “afford college.” But that\u2019s not what happened. Here\u2019s the upshot of this is. All of these middle-class families — not just middle class; every family. Practically every group of Americans however you qualify \u2019em believed in an education and wanted it for their kids, a college education, minimum four years because of what it meant.<\/p>\n

It was the route; it was the key; it was the way to achieve dreams; it was the way and the route to success. Well, what\u2019s it become? It\u2019s become shackles. The amount of debt the average graduate who has a student loan incurs after graduation — whatever economic benefit a college education was supposed to engender — has been eaten up by the debt. And who\u2019s been in charge of that? What group of people has been in charge of administering education?<\/p>\n

The establishment, the elites.<\/p>\n

\"\"They have now fixed it so that the one route that American middle-class families had for their kids to enjoy success in America has now become an albatross. And they are fully aware of it. What is the point of going to school and getting out with a debt of six or more figures that you\u2019re gonna take the rest of your life paying off, no matter what job you get? And who is benefiting from this? Certainly not the student, not the family, not the graduates. The colleges are benefiting, the loan agencies are benefiting — which is the government now, \u2019cause they run the program.<\/p>\n

TODD: They do run the program. There\u2019s another program they\u2019re wanting to run, and it\u2019s the most important thing we have to track yet.<\/p>\n

TODD: Of course. Well, Rush first, and then us. We appreciate that. I\u2019ll speak on behalf of Mark.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (giggles)<\/p>\n

TODD: Thank you very much, Caitlyn.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Of course. Thank you too. Yeah. I wanted to call in about the loan forgiveness. So I\u2019m a Millennial. I\u2019ll be 30 in a couple years. I took out loans at the suggestion of a professor years ago. I got my associate\u2019s in California where I was born and raised, and so I thought, “Okay, loans are a good idea,” \u2019cause his idea was, “Take out loans; you can finish your school sooner. Just be a full-time student and you\u2019ll have your income to pay back the loans, you know, when you graduate.”<\/p>\n

TODD: Yep.<\/p>\n

\"\"CALLER: Well, that\u2019s backfired, I think, for lots of people my age. (chuckels) But —<\/p>\n

TODD: How old are you?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019ll be 28 in a month.<\/p>\n

TODD: Awesome.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah. But, I mean, I made an adult decision to take out loans, and it\u2019s no one\u2019s responsibility other than mine. And just hearing you and other people who never went to college or they learned a trade, I mean, they should not be paying for all these people\u2019s bad decisions. That\u2019s the case with like a lot of things, right?<\/p>\n

TODD: Right.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Health care.<\/p>\n

TODD: Let\u2019s do a little Socratic inquiry together here while I have you on the phone, Caitlyn.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Okay.<\/p>\n

TODD: If you go to… Let\u2019s say in Rexburg, you go to the local sandwich shop and you say, “I guarantee I will buy all sandwiches from you at $11 apiece,” or let\u2019s say, “I will buy 80% of the sandwiches at $11 apiece,” what is gonna be the cost of a sandwich at the local sandwich shop in Rexburg for everybody else? Are they gonna price them lower, or are they gonna keep them at 11 bucks?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, 11 bucks, yeah.<\/p>\n

TODD: You set the ground. You set the ground floor, and this is what people better understand about free college is it\u2019s incredibly expensive. But you\u2019re saying that no longer are people who are getting the service going to pay for the service, we\u2019re going to drive the prices so high that in fact people won\u2019t be able to afford is because we\u2019re going to guarantee revenue.<\/p>\n

I once read an analysis, Caitlyn, that elite private colleges could provide actual free college — in other words, not tapping the taxpayer. All they had to do was take the interest they earn from their endowments. Harvard has some $50 million or $60 million in endowments. Just their carried interest could give everybody actual free college.<\/p>\n

\"\"CALLER: (farm animal sounds)<\/p>\n

TODD: But then they wouldn\u2019t get to earn. They wouldn\u2019t get to play with those investments. I hear farm investments in the background.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (giggles)<\/p>\n

TODD: That means that you\u2019ve got to go to work and do what working people do. Caitlyn, it\u2019s a joy to have a 28-year-old calling. I love Rexburg. I want you to go give big thumbs up to everybody in Rexburg from the EIB Network. All right?<\/p>\n
