RUSH: This program, as an e-mailer just said to me, is the very essence of civility. It was a woman who wrote me the note: ‘Yeah, I\u2019ve been listening to all this talk about how uncivil and angry you are. You are the politest host I have ever heard, Mr. Limbaugh. I would lose patience with half of your callers, but you are as nice to them as I have ever heard any talk show host be.\u2019 I appreciate that because that\u2019s exactly how we operate here. I\u2019m the politest host in America, there\u2019s no question about it. You can\u2019t occupy the lofty heights of this program filled with hate and anger and rudeness and all that kind of stuff. It would never work. <\/p>\n

Pat, New Port Richey, Florida, welcome to the EIB Network. Great to have you here.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes. Hello. How you doing?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Fine. Thank you.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes. I\u2019m quite upset over the way you speak about everybody. <\/p>\n

RUSH: Hmm.<\/p>\n

CALLER: It\u2019s the tone that you use that really upsets me. I don\u2019t mind that you have a difference in opinion and, you know, you feel very passionately about the things you believe in.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Right.<\/p>\n

CALLER: That\u2019s all fine and good.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Thank you.<\/p>\n

CALLER: But when the other side doesn\u2019t maybe see it the way you see we\u2019re all evil and we\u2019re calling people stupid. I never called the Tea Party stupid. I didn\u2019t agree with them. I understand what they were doing.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pat.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes?<\/p>\n

RUSH: I never said you called the Tea Party stupid.<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, you talk about the left convincing everybody, ‘Did you hear what they say? They\u2019re saying you\u2019re stupid; they\u2019re saying you are this.\u2019 In your tone of voice you make it like the left is calling the right stupid and all these other things that you say we\u2019re accusing — and what I find odd —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pat, wait a second — (crosstalk)<\/p>\n

CALLER: — I don\u2019t mean to be disrespectful, because I understand this is your business —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pat, wait a minute.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Go ahead.<\/p>\n

RUSH: If all the left was doing was calling us stupid, I wouldn\u2019t be upset at all.<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, this is what you say on your show.<\/p>\n

RUSH: That doesn\u2019t bother me, the left calling us stupid, that\u2019s not what —<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, no, no, you say we are calling you stupid.<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, I don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes, you do.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I wouldn\u2019t be bothered by that. If that\u2019s what the left were doing I wouldn\u2019t even make a point of it. The left is calling us murderers, Pat.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, because of all the things that you encourage people to do. You get them all riled up. You know, I\u2019m not saying you killed anybody but I understand where that comes from. And it\u2019s both sides. Both sides are getting too vitriol.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Give me an example of how I got them riled up.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, you want me to give you an example of how you got them riled up?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Give an example. I want to know what you think is an example of me getting them riled up.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, I think it\u2019s because when you speak about them, you speak about them with such detest and anger and hate and they\u2019re stupid and we\u2019re the ones that caused all the problems. It\u2019s all the liberals that cause —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Give me an example, cite for me some evidence.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, this is what we\u2019re gonna get. Look, right at the moment my head is spinning because I\u2019m like so anxious over this phone call —<\/p>\n

RUSH: So you can\u2019t remember any.<\/p>\n

CALLER: — I can\u2019t think of one exact thing you said, but all I know is that your whole tone, that\u2019s all I\u2019m trying to say, if you don\u2019t agree with things that\u2019s fine, but can\u2019t you just say it without all the hatred and the accusing and the —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Give me an example. Look, I want to learn, Pat. Give me an example of the hatred. <\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, first of all, the way you speak about Obama is disgusting.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pat, I know that I\u2019m confusing you asking to you substantiate the charge, but try.<\/p>\n

CALLER: You\u2019re not confusing me. It\u2019s that I\u2019m nervous being on the phone knowing I\u2019m on a radio show, you know, talking with someone who\u2019s whole business is talking, so I\u2019m not gonna be as, you know, quick thinking as you are. This is your business; it\u2019s not mine.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I\u2019ll get out of the way. I\u2019ll stop talking for 30 seconds or a minute, just give me an example.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (crosstalk)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Just give me an example.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019m very anxious. (crosstalk)<\/p>\n

RUSH: I want an example of the hate. <\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, everything a hear like, let\u2019s just give a for-instance.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You know what, you\u2019re the one that sounds pretty agitated to me, Pat.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I am agitated, because it upsets me that there\u2019s such hatred. Like I said, I don\u2019t mind that you think different from me.<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, no. I want an example of the hatred.<\/p>\n

CALLER: It\u2019s your whole tone.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, give me an example of tone. Imitate me. What is it I do?<\/p>\n

CALLER: All right, just like you\u2019ll say, ‘Oooh, the way we like to drive \u2019em crazy,\u2019 and you give that laugh that sounds like a maniac (imitating laugh). You actually get a thrill over when anybody on the other side or who doesn\u2019t agree with you fails in some way or it doesn\u2019t work out his way or it doesn\u2019t look that good. Instead of just saying it didn\u2019t work out or whatever, you actually gloat and get a thrill out of it, and that is not a Christian thing to do.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pat, do you —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Christians, we\u2019re supposed to be encouraging each other.<\/p>\n

RUSH: What is this, you Christians? Do you own a gun, Pat?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, and I never would.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Thank God.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Thank God is right, so don\u2019t try to turn it around on me. I\u2019m just trying to tell you that if you just made a statement about what you didn\u2019t like about Obama, that\u2019s fine. When you start now denigrating a person and tearing them down piece by piece —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Like what?<\/p>\n

CALLER: — and making them look like garbage in people\u2019s eyes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pat, I\u2019m more than willing here, but you\u2019re not giving me any specifics, you\u2019re falling back on this tone business, and nobody who listens to this program thinks I\u2019ve got this tone —<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, I\u2019ll tell you why. <\/p>\n

RUSH: I\u2019m being as civil with you as probably anybody in your family used to be.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, the reason that I may not be able to get to the tone of it, I can\u2019t remember everything, there\u2019s so many things you have said that are so horrible that I just — like I\u2019m sitting here going, ‘I can\u2019t believe this man actually gets away with this.\u2019 Well, the other thing. How come you never have people from the left on your show and have a debate of some sort?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I do, right here. I mean, here you are, and —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Not me, I\u2019m a nobody, I\u2019m just a person in —<\/p>\n

RUSH: You\u2019re not a nobody, Pat. <\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019m just another person in this land.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pat, you are not a nobody, you are a major —<\/p>\n

CALLER: I don\u2019t mean it in that sense. I\u2019m talking about a non-political big person.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pat, when you are on this show, you are —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah, I know.<\/p>\n

RUSH: — somebody, you are bigger than you have ever been.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah, I know. I\u2019m talking about —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, use the opportunity. You are somebody!<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah. Well, I know I\u2019m somebody.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You gotta stop thinking of yourself as nothing. This is what the left has done to you. You think you\u2019re nothing. You think you\u2019re just a speck of dust.<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, I don\u2019t think I\u2019m nothing. I\u2019m saying as compared to somebody in the political field who can really debate you. I really can\u2019t. I only know what I feel.<\/p>\n

RUSH: My phone lines are open.<\/p>\n

CALLER: All I\u2019m saying is that if you would just say it in a normal way, without using all this, I guess nobody would listen to the show if you didn\u2019t do it, I imagine that, but I do give you the respect to listen to you every day. I do. I don\u2019t agree with most of the things you say, but I will listen because you never know, someday I may learn something different, and sometimes maybe even your point of view, I may say, ‘You know, that gives you thought to think,\u2019 but it\u2019s the way you send the message out that it makes me get defensive, it\u2019s like, wait a minute, wait a minute, this is not right the way it\u2019s being said, there\u2019s other ways to say it that would make me feel maybe I could come over to that side, but I can\u2019t because the way you say it is so —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Wait a second now. <\/p>\n

CALLER: You back a person right against the wall.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Do you really mean that?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Mean what?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Let\u2019s examine what you just said here.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah. What I\u2019m saying is even if you said something I might think about, the tone that you use is like, ‘Oh, I can\u2019t even agree with this man, does not fit into my universe.\u2019<\/p>\n

RUSH: Even if I were able to persuade you that my argument was right, you would reject it because of what you perceive to be my tone?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, I wouldn\u2019t reject it, it\u2019s just that I couldn\u2019t feel —<\/p>\n

RUSH: He-he-he-he-he.<\/p>\n

CALLER: — I couldn\u2019t feel, how could I put it?<\/p>\n

RUSH: He-he-he-he-he-he.<\/p>\n

CALLER: It\u2019s hard to say. I wouldn\u2019t be able to — how can I say it? I can still take other ideas, I don\u2019t have only one, you know, like the left or the right. I teeter back and forth, but it\u2019s the tone that you take that that\u2019s why I don\u2019t like that side. It seems to be very hostile and aggressive and mad.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pat, I think you\u2019re addicted to my tone.<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, I\u2019m not addicted to your tone. (laughing) I\u2019m sorry.<\/p>\n

RUSH: And that\u2019s why you don\u2019t realize it. <\/p>\n

CALLER: I am sometimes laughing and I feel bad because I mean you\u2019re not a stupid man, I know that, but the thing is and the fact is the only reason you do it and the way you do it is because you wouldn\u2019t make money any other way. If you did it normal just to tell us the facts —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Look, I\u2019m gonna give you one more chance.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I can\u2019t because I\u2019m so anxious right now. So many things are flying through my head.<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, you\u2019re not. Pat, look, I\u2019m not gonna sit here and fall for this I\u2019m not good at what I\u2019m doing business, I\u2019m so nervous. You\u2019re speaking very well, you\u2019re articulating very well, as well as the president does.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Now, that\u2019s what I mean.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Just tell me — (crosstalk)<\/p>\n

CALLER: Things like that I don\u2019t like.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pat, please give me an example of the tone —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, all right, that\u2019s the tone. How you say Michelle (My Belle), you insulted the children, you know, and then you take something — I go on the Internet, as soon as you say something —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Michelle (My Belle)? (crosstalk)<\/p>\n

CALLER: — look it up, all right, I look — (crosstalk)<\/p>\n

RUSH: When did I insult the children? What children?<\/p>\n

CALLER: When you imitate the children talk, (imitating Rush) ‘Daddy, daddy,\u2019 and you do all that crap, that is insulting. If you had children you wouldn\u2019t like that.<\/p>\n

RUSH: (laughing)<\/p>\n

CALLER: It\u2019s very insulting to denigrate a child.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I talk to my nephews and nieces that way.<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, I\u2019m sorry, that is not nice to do, I don\u2019t care who it is, you don\u2019t have to be the president. Everybody deserves respect. It\u2019s the respect part that I don\u2019t like. That\u2019s what I find very upsetting. When you try to tear down — look, you may not agree with this man, that\u2019s fine, you don\u2019t have to, we don\u2019t all have to agree with everybody, but when you try to make a person evil because you don\u2019t agree with his political things, that\u2019s where I find it wrong.<\/p>\n

RUSH: What about what Sheriff Dipstick said about me?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Maybe he spoke a little too fast, right, everybody\u2019s getting all upset. Let me just ask you something and I want an honest answer. You really believe in your heart of hearts that the president is actually trying to destroy our country? I want an honest answer. You really, truly believe this in your heart?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Let me spell it out for you.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Go ahead.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Y-E-S.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes. That\u2019s what I\u2019m saying. And that\u2019s ridiculous. You may not agree —<\/p>\n

RUSH: It\u2019s happening right before our very eyes. The US economy is being transformed right before our very eyes.<\/p>\n

CALLER: You\u2019re gonna blame this all on him, everything? Come on. This was all ten years coming. I\u2019m not saying maybe he didn\u2019t help —<\/p>\n

RUSH: I\u2019m not blaming him for everything. There\u2019s Pelosi, there\u2019s Reid, there\u2019s Algore.<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, no, no —<\/p>\n

RUSH: There\u2019s a whole bunch of them.<\/p>\n

CALLER: You blame it on, as you call it, the regime, constantly it\u2019s the regime, you know, because you want to make it sound derogatory. All I\u2019m saying is we all have a hand in it, all of us, and, yes, you can say I don\u2019t agree with what he\u2019s doing, I think he\u2019s going down the wrong path, that\u2019s fine, but when you start trying to convince people that — <\/p>\n

RUSH: Let me ask — hey, Pat? (crosstalk)<\/p>\n

CALLER: — to destroy the country.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pat? Pat?<\/p>\n

CALLER: That\u2019s wrong!<\/p>\n

RUSH: You there?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Go ahead, I\u2019m done.<\/p>\n

RUSH: He-he-he-he-he. One question.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Have you read the president\u2019s books? Have you read Dreams from My Father?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, but I hear you give excerpts of it.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, do you know what his father\u2019s dream was?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, tell me.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Don\u2019t tell you?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, tell me. I don\u2019t know it, so tell me.<\/p>\n

RUSH: To transform and destroy the United States as a capitalist nation.<\/p>\n

CALLER: His father said transform and destroy?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Barack Obama, Sr.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Right, said transform and destroy?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah. America is the great Satan and the great enemy, father was a —<\/p>\n

CALLER: You\u2019re saying in the book that he says — (crosstalk)<\/p>\n

RUSH: His father was a communist.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah. That might be true. That doesn\u2019t mean he is, okay? Let me just give you an example of something. This is the only way I can say it. Many of the times — (crosstalk)<\/p>\n

RUSH: (laughing) I\u2019ve given you example after example after example.<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, I want to tell you something. Many of the times I\u2019ve heard you say, remember when the whole thing with Jeremiah Wright was going on? <\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah.<\/p>\n

CALLER: That he sat in that church and he listened to all that —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah, who could forget it?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Okay, I\u2019m just gonna give you an example of something. I have relatives in my family whom I love very much but I am very politically on the other side of what they believe, and a lot of things that we believe in, they will say things that are absolutely — I can\u2019t believe it, I\u2019ll just sit there and say, ‘Oh, my God, I can\u2019t believe you said that. I don\u2019t agree with you at all but I love you for other things.\u2019 So I try to stay away from the political things, but if I was with them and they were other people they would think that I was agreeing with them.<\/p>\n

RUSH: What are you talking about now?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Because you feel that Obama believes everything Jeremiah Wright might have said.<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, I\u2019m saying Obama heard it while he\u2019s denied that he heard it.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Maybe he did, maybe he didn\u2019t. (crosstalk)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Twenty years I guess it\u2019s open for debate. He might not have heard it in 20 years.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Doesn\u2019t mean he agrees with it.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Might not-a heard a thing in 20 years.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I heard a lot of things, too, that I don\u2019t agree with in my family.<\/p>\n

RUSH: His kids were baptized in that church. He took his kids there to learn it. Michelle (My Belle) went in there with him. Michelle (My Belle) loves that church. Pat, I secretly think you love me.<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, I don\u2019t love you, but I\u2019m not going to be disrespectful. I don\u2019t believe in that.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I think you are addicted to this program. I think that you can\u2019t turn it off even when you want to.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Only because you prove me right every time. I sit there and I go, ‘I can\u2019t believe he said this,\u2019 and then I go look it up on the Internet and I read it in the papers and I go to just not one site, I go all over the place and then I see you say it when I go on the YouTube, when they have little YouTube things of you.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well —<\/p>\n

CALLER: You\u2019d probably get more people on your side if you said what you\u2019re saying in a less vitriol way, and then maybe we\u2019d start listening to you, but you push people that might want to go over your side because they can\u2019t stand the anger and the hostility.<\/p>\n
