SMITH: In Melbourne, they had a 111-day lockdown. Started with 20,000 cases a day, and two days ago they had zero cases. Why can\u2019t we do that?<\/p>\n

FAUCI: When you talk about lockdowns, that certainly they were extremely successful. What Melbourne did, what Australia did as a country was very successful. I was on the phone with my Australian colleagues two nights ago, and they were describing exactly what you said.<\/p>\n

We could, Shep. We can destroy the economy and take the world economy with us. We could do that. There\u2019s no reason to do it! The mortality rate for COVID-19 is plummeting.<\/p>\n
The death rate is way down. There isn\u2019t any reason for this panic. There isn\u2019t any reason for this. One-hundred-and-eleven days of lockdown? We\u2019ve been there, done that. We destroyed livelihoods. We blew up people\u2019s dreams. We still have parts of cities and towns boarded up. I don\u2019t even know if Shepard\u2019s right here. I think it might have been New Zealand that shut down for 111 days.<\/p>\n
Regardless where it was, it isn\u2019t necessary, and they\u2019re gonna face a spike. If you shut down for 111 days, you\u2019re not getting rid of the virus. You are not destroying the virus. You\u2019re not wiping it out. When you reopen after 111 days, you\u2019re gonna have a spike. You\u2019re gonna have a COVID spike.
