Christine O’Donnell is three points ahead of Mike Castle. I was at a dinner party Saturday night with a lot of people. We’re sitting at a circular table. It must have been 14 or 15 people. And the host went around the table to say, ‘One being we’re in great shape and ten means the end of America, where would you put America on a scale of one to ten? Ten being finished; one being fat city.’ And the host gave a very famous name, somebody he respects, who thinks that we’re at an eight. The table seemed shocked. So people around the table explained where they thought the country was. And, of course, it came to me. And I said, ‘Eight, six, whatever… If it were eight I’d probably hang it up and go to New Zealand,’ you know, what I always say here. I said, ‘The thing that concerns me the most is that we are, the Republicans are, blowing the single greatest opportunity we have ever had to blow liberalism out of the water forever and to establish a party that can roll back big government, intrusive government, and fix this once and for all. I don’t know why we don’t learn from the eighties. I don’t know why people do not learn that liberalism fails and is misery every time it’s tried.’

And somebody brought up the Delaware race, and I said, ‘Well, you know, I have no brief for Christine O’Donnell. But I’m just going to tell you a Senate full of Mike Castles is not gonna get us anywhere. It’s gonna get a bunch of Republicans their chairmanships on the committee but it’s not going to do anything to reverse Obamaism. Not one thing. If that’s our majority with a bunch of Mike Castles there, we’re in trouble.’ I was the only one at the table who thought this. Yeah. And this was a table of Republican conservatives. I was the only one, at least the only one who was willing to say it. I think some people did chime in later to one degree or another. (interruption) Some were Northeast Republicans, yeah. Some were Northeast Republicans. Don’t misunderstand. I’m not trying to put feathers in my cap. That’s not the point here. It’s just that in a lot of places Republican victory is all that matters, no matter who the Republican is. And now the Republicans and some official Republicans are actually in a panic over the fact that this Christine O’Donnell woman is leading Castle by three points.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: There was an interesting story over the weekend on a blog. I wish I could remember who wrote it. I don’t have it on the top of my head here but it was a conservative blogger attempting to tell people why Sarah Palin is hated by Republicans. We all know why Democrats hate her and liberals, but why do certain Republicans hate her? Why do people not like Sharron Angle? Why do people not like Christine O’Donnell? This blogger’s theory, which I think has a lot of potential, is that it’s about status. If somebody from the wrong group happens to succeed, happens to rise to the top, then it threatens the membership of people who are really unqualified to be in the ruling class.

This guy had a theory that one of the reasons for racism all the way back from the early days of this country up until the mid-sixties was a status thing. He said if you look most of the racists in this country were poor rural, white, and they didn’t want to be considered at the lowest rung of the status ladder and always making sure there was somebody beneath them on the status ladder was important to them. Now, first I heard of this analysis when I read it, ‘Well, this may be worth thinking about.’ When you look at it with the Sharron Angle business or the Sarah Palin business and now Christine O’Donnell and you look at the Republicans who are opposing these new conservative candidates and doing so with passion, you say, ‘Okay, they would prefer to have somebody like Mike Castle elected, who is not even as good as McCain. What good is that going to do the conservative movement?’ These are supposedly conservative people who are out trashing conservative candidates in favor of the professional more so-called moderate Republicans, like Castle and like Chris Shays, and so forth. People, what does that get us?

This blogger’s theory is that, well, some of these people who are ripping into Angle and ripping into Christine O’Donnell are really insecure about their own status in the ruling class and they want to remain in it, and they see what the power brokers of the ruling class are doing opposing the Palins, the O’Donnells, the George Demos’s, all these Tea Party people, and they’re taking their lead from that. They don’t want to lose their status in the ruling class. The reason why it’s interesting to me is because on the surface it is hard to understand. Okay, here are conservative candidates. We have to acknowledge every candidate is going to have some baggage, personal and otherwise. But if you have a moderate RINO Republican versus a conservative Republican, and both have baggage, I mean it’s unreal to think that the RINO Republicans are clean and pure as the wind-driven snow. Why all of a sudden do we now want the RINOs, after all these years and years and years of somewhat unity on the conservative side saying RINOs are not good for the party, not good for the country? So this guy’s theory on status intrigued me. I’m still examining it, still looking into it. I’ll find the blog. I’ll read the exact words to you.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Anyway here’s this blog, it’s The Chicago Boyz: ‘Palin and the Left’s Status-Anxiety — The left’s obsession with Sarah Palin is one of the most interesting political and social phenomena of our time. The degree and volume of venom directed at her staggers the imagination. It is unprecedented in recent times especially for someone who does not currently hold office. This comment on a Hit and Run thread, provides a common example: ‘You jest, but on my drive home last night I listened to a couple of NPR disembodied voices opining as to how Sara (sic) Palin was different, even in today’s polarized political environment, because she demonizes the opposition. The irony was particularly palpable because the ’round table’ discussion about how evil Sara Palin is was the lead-in to an interview with the author of a ‘behind the scenes’ expose book about Sara Palin that promises to expose her as the evil, manipulative monster that she really is and was immediately preceded by a blurb that the creepy reporter who moved in next door to the Palin family to spy on them had moved out.” That’s the comment the guy heard.

‘Leftists try to rationalize the hatred by claiming that Palin is an extremist, but that is easily disproved by comparing where she stands on various issues versus how many Americans hold the same views. Moreover, if she truly were an extremist, she wouldn’t be a threat because she would have no electoral base. No, the best explanation for the left’s bizarre Palin obsession is status-anxiety. Status-anxiety occurs when a person believes that their position in a real or imagined social hierarchy is threatened. Leftists react emotionally to Palin because of the threat she poses to their own individual sense of status. All their other arguments are just put forth to rationalize that emotional reaction. </line>
In short, it is not the ideas she puts forth, it’s that someone like her is significant at all.’</line>

This blogger goes on to say that this is the same kind of thing that may be happening out there in the upper tiers of conservative intellectualism, which you’ll find the same attitudes about Palin as you’ll find on the left. You’ll find the same attitudes about this Christine O’Donnell woman in Delaware, Sharron Angle, or the guy in Alaska that beat Murkowski. ‘Leftism at its heart holds that a small percentage of humans have a vastly superior understanding of everything compared to ordinary people. The point of leftism is to empower these superior individuals to impose their superior understanding upon society by the force of the state. Leftists must be viewed by themselves and others as superior human beings if they are to have a claim to power and status.’ And then along comes somebody who does not fit their mold, who is more popular, makes more sense, has a bigger electoral base than they do, and there you have the threat. It gets back to Mr. Codevilla, ruling class versus country class. It gets back to the high school clique versus the people not in it. Essentially we never get outta high school. The problem is that the people in the cliques, the minority, the elites, the superiorists, now have a stranglehold on the country.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Okay, so The Chicago Boyz blog explaining that it’s the threat to status, status anxiety that causes elitists of all ideological stripes to oppose people like Sarah Palin, Christine O’Donnell, Sharron Angle, any number of them. Then there’s a Le•gal In•sur•rec•tion blog with a poster named Bill Jacobson who’s associate clinical professor of law at Cornell who goes even further. He says: ‘The ‘nuts and sluts’ defense is a common employment law tactic whenever a female employee brings a claim. It doesn’t matter what the claim is, the defense — after the usual legal mumbo jumbo — will be something like this: ‘She’s nuts. And by the way, pssst, she may be a slut.’ That is the mode of attack Democrats use against conservative women. Sarah Palin is the prime example, as she routinely is called crazy and is sexualized by the left.’ Yeah, Nikki Haley in South Carolina, she’s a slut. She’s loose. Now stick with me on this because this is how the left always goes out and attacks conservative women and some elite conservatives in the blogosphere and the Republican Party do the same thing. Yet guess who’s always silent? The feminazis. The feminazis are never upset.

Now, Bill Clinton and Carville called Paula Jones trailer trash. Carville said: (imitating Carville) ‘You never know what you’re gonna get when you drag a dollar bill through a trailer park. ha-ha-ha-ha.’ It worked for Clinton. Used it on Lewinsky, too. ‘The nuts part of the attack is being used against Christine O’Donnell in Delaware by the local Republican establishment…’ this is from the Le•gal In•sur•rec•tion blog, ‘…and also by two leading conservative magazines, The Weekly Standard and National Review. If O’Donnell is so nuts,’ the blogger asks, ‘why did the Delaware Republican Party nominate her to run against Joe Biden just two years ago? If O’Donnell wins tomorrow, you can be sure that the Democrats will seize on the nuts attack from Republicans, and take it to the next step by sexualizing O’Donnell (it already has started). By signing on to the nuts defense directed at conservative women, the Republican establishment has adopted the most pernicious line of Democratic Party attack.’

One of the ways they talk about Castle is, ‘I am not ‘anti-Mike Castle,’ but I do have a problem with someone who was willing to destroy the economy by signing on to Nancy Pelosi’s cap-and-trade plan.’ There are people attacking Castle that way, but the point is they’re doing it on his issues; they’re doing it on his ideas. Nobody is out there calling him names. ‘The vigorous attacks on Castle have been focused almost exclusively on his record and policy prescriptions. Almost none of the attacks on O’Donnell focus on her policies or political agenda,’ which, if you’ve been paying attention, is true. Not one attack on Christine O’Donnell because of what she believes. No, she sued a think tank, got the IRS after her, other personal attacks they’re going after her with. That’s why I keep saying I guess Mike Castle is clean and pure as the wind-driven snow; he doesn’t have any baggage. There’s not a person in the country that could run for office that doesn’t have any baggage. So something of note here and it’s going to be interesting to see if O’Donnell does win tomorrow, to look at the Republican establishment and see how they react to it. If they’re being true to form now, they will not support her. They simply won’t.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Washington Post today. In Delaware, GOP comes out swinging against Tea Party. The Delaware Republican Party chairman in this article essentially says, if you want a conservative committee chair, step back and allow Castle to become the next senator. If you — in other words, the Republican chairman saying, we don’t have a chance with this O’Donnell woman. You want a conservative in the Senate, go Castle. But he’s not. He’s not a conservative. That’s the fault line.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: I really find this fascinating. If you will indulge me here for just a mere moment, Washington Post: ‘In Del., GOP Comes Out Swinging Against Tea Party.’ And here’s the Republican Party chairman of Delaware, Tom Ross: ‘Quite frankly, I don’t know what the goal is here. If they really want to see conservatives as chairmen of committees in the United States Senate, they’d step back and allow Mike Castle to become the next United States senator.’ Now, what’s amazing about this is I think it’s a tremendous tribute to everyday people in this country that everybody running for office is trying to convince everybody else that they’re the most conservative in the race. And yet the RINO moderates know full well what they have to do to win. They have to go out and sound conservative, talk about being conservative, when they aren’t. We never see Republicans fight the Democrats the way they’re fighting their own. Have you ever seen the Republicans fight against the Democrats the way they’re fighting against Palin, the way they fight against Christine O’Donnell or Sharron Angle? You don’t.

The Republican Party establishment is out trying to, A, tell everybody their RINOs are conservatives. The Democrats are running away from liberalism as fast as they can which they always do every election, and the genuine conservatives are being trashed by everybody while the other candidates are saying that they’re the most conservative out there. It happens every election, don’t misunderstand, but it’s never been like this in our lifetime. Meanwhile, the Democrat media complex is trying to portray the Tea Party and middle America as kooks, as radicals. Now, if Christine O’Donnell is such a crazy and is so unqualified for office why did the state Republican Party nominate her to run against Bite Me in 2008? Only when the sitting ruling class guy comes along and wants to be Senator, which is what happens, it’s like the Specter business versus Toomey, ‘Well, he deserves our support, been a Republican for all these years. This is how you climb the ladder in party politics and loyalty, there’s a two-way street and so forth.’ They’d be supporting O’Donnell now if Castle didn’t want to be a Senator. He’s been governor; he’s been a member of Congress. But I find it refreshing in a way, encouraging in other ways. Everybody is trying to convince voters how conservative they are. All the while, the Democrat media complex is out there trying to tell everybody in the country what a bunch of kooks Sarah Palin is, the Tea Party, middle America, bunch of kooks and radicals. So it really is like Mr. Codevilla said, it’s the ruling class, whatever party identifier attaches to them, versus the everyman.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: This is Deborah Sue in Appleton, Wisconsin. Hi, Deborah Sue, great to have you on the EIB Network.

CALLER: Dittos, Rush. Thank you for having me. I’ve been listening to you for about 17 years now.

RUSH: Thank you very much.

CALLER: I think that everyone has it wrong about the Christine O’Donnell, Sarah Palin, and, you know, Laura (sic) Angle and all that. It’s because they are both pretty and smart and it’s why everyone hates Fox News is because of all those gorgeous woman on there who, by the way, have degrees like Megyn Kelly, she has both a law degree from, what, Oxford and somewhere else, I forgot, but they are so smart and beautiful at the same time, which is why the feminazis don’t back them up —

RUSH: There’s no question that when you’re talking about the feminazis, you’re right. There’s no question that they don’t like these women because they’re good-looking, because feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women this kind of access and success in the mainstream.

CALLER: Right.

RUSH: Yeah.

CALLER: And I agree with you so 100% on feminism Rush, because I am so angry at them for bringing me down with them. I’d much rather be a stay-at-home mom taking care of my kids than having to be out in the workforce, you know, but because of this all us women are forced to work. We don’t have a choice anymore.

RUSH: Well, I know. They goofed up in a number of ways but the primary way the feminazis goofed up was to try to tell women that in order to reach their potential they had to be like men. So they had to become career minded, they had to wear the suits, the costumes, join the clubs, all the stuff, rather than fully utilize all of the talents and ammunition that they had as woman, they had to become men. That’s one of the biggest mistakes feminism made, among many. Now, Megyn Kelly has a BA in political science from Syracuse, and her JD, her legal degree is from Albany law school. I don’t know that she went to Oxford. Not that that matters, just that we’re being accurate here. If she’d been to Oxford, I dare say — (interruption) is she pretty? Megyn Kelly, she pretty? Well, yeah. So? Of course she’s pretty. (interruption) No, it’s not all that matters. It’s not. Let me tell you something. Let me tell you something. Megyn Kelly is fast developing a reputation for a cutthroat. She’s not just a pretty face on television. She’s making mincemeat out of people that go on who are wrong on issues. That pretty face stuff, that’s just added bonus, but that’s not her claim to fame. More and more of her recognition is coming from the substance of what she’s doing and the people on that show that she’s slicing and dicing.

RUSH: An amazing thing is happening in Delaware.
