<\/p>\nRUSH: The polls are tightening out there. I don\u2019t remember which poll this is. But there\u2019s one that\u2019s really got \u2019em bugged on the Democrat side because this poll is exactly where the Trump-Hillary race was in 2016, almost the exact, 6.4 is the margin of victory that Biden has. It\u2019s the same margin of victory Hillary had. And they\u2019re very much worried.<\/p>\n
CNN today, John Berman talking to their senior politics writer, a guy named Harry Enten. “You\u2019ve been watching presidential polling very carefully and I think you were the first person to point out that there\u2019s a trend as far as the president goes that is worth noting. What do you see?”<\/p>\n

ENTEN: I should start off by saying that Joe Biden is still well ahead in the polls. That being said, if you were to squint your eyes and look pretty closely, what you do see is maybe there\u2019s been a slight tightening. Biden\u2019s lead was expanding from say May to June and even into July, that lead is no longer as expanding. Trump is certainly stabilizing at this particular point.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Uh-oh. Uh-oh. Now, did you catch the tone and inflection there? The first thing the guy says: I should start off by saying Biden well ahead, he\u2019s well ahead, no reason to panic, no reason to worry, CNN viewers. I should start off by saying, Biden is still well ahead.<\/p>\n
Not for anything Biden\u2019s doing, by the way. You know, I have the perfect tag line for a Biden TV commercial, “Because he\u2019s got a D next to his name,” because that\u2019s gonna be why 90% of the people who vote for him vote for him, \u2019cause there\u2019s a D next to his name.<\/p>\n

Besides that, nobody\u2019s gonna know. That\u2019s all that matters. Because he\u2019s got a D next to his name, they ought to try that, they ought to try that as a tag line. But this guy Harry (doing impression), “Biden\u2019s still doing really, really well. No reason to worry, no reason. But I gotta tell you, if you look closely, if you squint your eyes and if you look closely, there\u2019s been some tightening. Oh, no. It\u2019s getting closer. He\u2019s way ahead, though. No reason to panic.”<\/p>\n
This is like the way they react to Nate Silver. When Nate Silver has bad news for \u2019em, it\u2019s bad news, and it\u2019s panic city. Here the next one. CNBC Squawk Box today, Scott Wapner speaking with the Council of Economic Advisers chairman Jason Furman about Trump\u2019s production of a large number of jobs being added in July.<\/p>\n
Trump did predict that earlier this week. He predicted it. Trump predicts a lot of things. But on CNBC they had to argue over maybe did Trump know, did the rules get violated? Did the labor department, did they give Trump a heads-up on the numbers, did they violate the law? And that\u2019s what this bite is about.<\/p>\n
WAPNER: On Tuesday the president himself told you, us, that the job number was going to be big on Friday. Here we go. He, he presumably – I mean, he must have had an inkling that it was going to be good, He wouldn\u2019t say something like that if it was going to be bad.<\/p>\n
JASON FURMAN: I used to give these numbers to President Obama. There is no way President Trump had any information on Tuesday. He learned yesterday afternoon what this number was, didn\u2019t know anything before that.<\/p>\n
WAPNER: How do you know? How can you be so sure? I mean, he said a big number was coming on Friday. Presumably he wouldn\u2019t say something like that if it was going to be a dud today.<\/p>\n
FURMAN: I\u2019m quite confident. I know how the BLS process works, how the numbers are transmitted to the White House. He did not have them on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
RUSH: So that\u2019s Jason Furman, who is the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors. I\u2019ve heard this before. This is not the first time this allegation has come up. I remember during the eight years of Obama there were people on our side who thought, “He\u2019s getting the numbers, they\u2019re giving him the numbers.” And I\u2019ve always been told that the Bureau of Labor Statistics is almost as secure as the NSA. And this guy, you heard him, there\u2019s no way that Trump knew these numbers in advance, no way. They don\u2019t do that. And it\u2019s not the first time I\u2019ve heard it.<\/p>\n

But still they\u2019re trying to lay it off on Trump because he was right. Trump makes all kinds of predictions. And it boils down to they still don\u2019t understand the guy. The first thing they don\u2019t understand about him is his optimism. They aren\u2019t optimistic. And they just don\u2019t understand his. They think optimists are essentially liars. They think optimists are people that look through rose-colored glasses. They think optimists are not realists. And that leads to one of the biggest divides and disconnects because you know it takes to be an optimist?<\/p>\n
It takes the ability to be a realist, to go against the conventional wisdom, to go against the grain. The grain\u2019s always gonna be negative. The grain is always gonna be pessimistic. Human beings are wired for it. Like I said yesterday, you don\u2019t have to be taught to be a pessimist. You don\u2019t have to check a book out to learn how to be a pessimist. We all know how to do that naturally, instinctively. But optimism requires effort, requires some learning, some education. And the people that can tell you how to do it have gotten filthy rich in the process because it is hard to do.<\/p>\n
By the way, the poll that Harry Enten here was panicked about, that is the Real Clear Politics Poll of Polls. And that\u2019s the average of all the really relevant polls, and it\u2019s the one that\u2019s hardest to refute. And if Trump is gaining significant ground in it, it\u2019s one of the reasons that they would be panicked.<\/p>\n
But they have such a strange relationship with optimism that if Trump gets something right, if he predicts something that is an optimistic or very positive, upbeat prediction, if he goes to it right they conclude he\u2019s gotta be cheating, gotta be cheating. Nobody would think there\u2019s anything good happening right now, nobody. For Trump to come out, he\u2019s gotta be cheating.
