RUSH: Open Line Friday in Carrabelle, Florida. This is Terry. Nice to have you on the program. Hello.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Hi. Nice to talk to you, Rush.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Thank you very much.<\/p>\n

<\/a>CALLER: Yesterday I was listening to you and you were talking about sea turtles, and you said something to the effect of it has not been proven that lights affect sea turtles. Were you talking about the big mama turtles or were you talking about the baby turtles?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Talking about the hatchlings.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh.<\/p>\n

RUSH: It\u2019s actually both. I know the theory, but has been scientifically established.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well…<\/p>\n

RUSH: Even in the official government documents and in the notices that we get from the state and the town here, ‘It is thought… It is highly suspected that… lights form an attraction to the turtles.\u2019<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well…<\/p>\n

RUSH: But they also tell us ‘artificial\u2019 light. They say the moon won\u2019t affect them. It\u2019s only human-manufactured lights.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, Rush, I\u2019ve been monitoring sea turtles for about 18 years, and —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Tell me, how do you do that?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well (sigh), I —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Do you spend every night on the beach?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, no, no, no. I go in the morning. I walk in the morning, and I walk a certain section of the beach, and I see what crawls have come up the night before, and I take my little flags and plant them.<\/p>\n

RUSH: So you\u2019re looking at tracks, turtle tracks of the flippers —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes, I\u2019m looking at tracks, and then I verify that there is a clutch in there, and then I put the flags around —<\/p>\n

RUSH: By ‘clutch\u2019 you mean a nest. <\/p>\n

CALLER: Right.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You mean a nest of freshly laid turtle eggs?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Right.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Right. Okay.<\/p>\n

CALLER: So I put a sign, I put the flags around it and then I take a GPS reading.<\/p>\n

RUSH: What color is it? A little orange flag you stick in the sand?<\/p>\n

CALLER: You can use any color. I use orange.<\/p>\n

RUSH: All right.<\/p>\n

CALLER: And then the sign says, ‘Sea turtle nest,\u2019 and then when I get home I\u2019ll put the date down.<\/p>\n

RUSH: But you have yet to see an actual sea turtle egg?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh! What are you…? Have I seen a sea turtle egg?<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, I mean, you\u2019re marking a nest but you really haven\u2019t seen it?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, no, no, no! I go dig down in there and verify it. I go to the top egg.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You dig down to the eggs and expose them?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I… No, just the top one!<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, there\u2019s one dead.<\/p>\n

<\/a>CALLER: No. No. No. (gigging) No. I\u2019m permitted by the state, and so I go down and I just dig. I know how to do it very carefully, and I find that first top egg, because they\u2019re plopped on top of one another. So I put the flags far enough around it so it didn\u2019t poke any eggs and then I mark it on my calendar. Fifty-five days later, I can tell when it\u2019s getting ready to hatch because it starts to cave in — and that\u2019s when they\u2019re starting to dig, and they\u2019re starting to come out and make their way to the ocean.<\/line> <\/line> RUSH: They always come out at night, right? That\u2019s —<\/line> <\/line> CALLER: No, they do not.<\/line> <\/line> RUSH: Well, wait a minute.<\/line> <\/line> CALLER: Like if it\u2019s a rainy day and the sand\u2019s cool, they\u2019ll come out in the daytime.<\/line> <\/line> RUSH: So but they won\u2019t come out in broad daylight, sunlight?<\/line> <\/line> CALLER: Yes, they will!<\/line> <\/line> RUSH: Well, then!<\/line> <\/line> CALLER: Well, okay. I\u2019ll just say —<\/line> <\/line> RUSH: Well, then wait a second. <\/line> <\/line> CALLER: (giggling)<\/line> <\/line> RUSH: Now, you may want to rethink what you\u2019re telling me.<\/line> <\/line> CALLER: Wait, wait, wait. What I meant is they will come out in the sun.<\/line> <\/line> RUSH: Because you can\u2019t get any brighter than the sun.<\/line> <\/line> CALLER: Wait a minute.<\/line> <\/line> RUSH: I don\u2019t care how many lights I turn on at night, I cannot duplicate the lumens coming off el sol.<\/line> <\/line> CALLER: (giggling) Rush… Rush, I have… It\u2019s been completely dark, and I will sometimes take people on these little tours to see if a nest might be hatching, and it\u2019s dark. So I go down there, and I\u2019ll turn my flashlight on to see where the nest is, and if I get there and they\u2019re hatching out, if they\u2019re headed for the water, they turn right back toward the flashlight.<\/line> <\/line> RUSH: That\u2019s not good.<\/line> <\/line> CALLER: No! It\u2019s artificial light. Now, the big mama turtles, I don\u2019t really think the lights affect them, \u2019cause you get a lot of nests down where you are. Where I am in the Gulf Coast, north Florida, we don\u2019t really get as many as you\u2019ll get but you have lights all down there. But it does affect the babies.<\/line> <\/line> RUSH: All right. Well, I\u2019m not disputing this. I\u2019m just saying scientifically it has not been established. It is thought to happen with anecdotal evidence such as yours. But I\u2019m glad to be updated on this, and I\u2019m glad you called, Terry. Remember, you\u2019re talking to the Palm Beach founder of the Turtle Preservation Society.
