RUSH: The 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall is going on right now. It\u2019s dark over there in Germany. I have a story here from the State-Controlled Associated Press: ‘Merkel Thanks Gorbachev on Berlin Wall Anniversary.\u2019 Now, let\u2019s be clear about something. ‘Barack Hussein Obama. Mmm, mmm, mmm!\u2019 was invited to go and said (imitating Obama) ‘Mmm, mmm, mmm, ain\u2019t going! Got to bowl, gotta play golf, got a concert in the House, got a date night, gotta celebrate health care. I ain\u2019t going. I don\u2019t believe in freedom, anyway.<\/section>\n

That wall, we communists, we don\u2019t celebrate our failures. Let Gorbachev handle it. Besides, I don\u2019t want to go over there and be upstaged by Ronald Reagan.\u2019 I have not found any reporting yet — I\u2019m not saying she didn\u2019t do it, but I\u2019ve not found any reporting yet that says Merkel mentions Reagan. Now, she did back on November 4th in a speech. She said, ‘Ronald Reagan far earlier than others saw and recognized the sign of the times when standing at the Brandenburg Gate in \u201987. He said, ‘Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate, tear down this wall.\u2019 This appeal to something that never will be forgotten,\u2019 Merkel said. This appeal? So Gorbachev is over there and by the way, he\u2019s out there making news. He\u2019s now comparing the climate change effort here, militant environmentalism has now replaced the Cold War. And nations have to come together to solve that problem.<\/section>\n

How do you have a 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and not mention Ronaldus Magnus? Here, listen to some of the story. ‘Chancellor Angela Merkel and former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev crossed a former fortified border on Monday to cheers of ‘Gorby! Gorby!\u2019 as a throng of grateful Germans recalled the night 20 years ago that the Berlin Wall gave way to their desire for freedom and unity.\u2019 What, Gorbachev went over there and helped blow it up? Wasn\u2019t Gorbachev the guy desperately trying to keep that wall up? ‘Within moments of a confused announcement on Nov. 9, 1989 that East Germany was lifting travel restrictions, hundreds of people streamed into the enclave that was West Berlin…\u2019 Did they cheer ‘Gorby!Gorby! Gorby\u2019 then? No, they didn\u2019t cheer ‘Gorby! Gorby! Gorby!\u2019 then. And you know why? Because they hadn\u2019t yet done the revisionist history to say, ‘Oh, it was all Gorbachev.\u2019 Twenty years has passed and Gorbachev gets all the credit.\"\"<\/p>\n

‘She lauded Gorbachev, with whom she shared an umbrella amid a crush of hundreds, eager for a glimpse of the man many still consider a hero for his role in pushing reform in the Soviet Union.\u2019 Last time I looked, there was a story last week that some people say, ‘You know what? This freedom thing in Russia is not working. It hasn\u2019t worked out. We gotta go back to what was.\u2019 So apparently whatever Gorbachev led Russia to is not working. Yet he\u2019s still feted here as a big hero for ‘his role in pushing reform in the Soviet Union.\u2019 His role? For crying out loud, folks, we all on this program in this audience know the truth. Lady Thatcher has said the truth, and it\u2019s quite simple. The Soviets were defeated because they could not keep up. They were a bankrupt Third World nation with a First World military, pure and simple.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Get this headline here in the New York Times: ‘The Legacy of 1989 Is Still Up for Debate,\u2019 meaning the Berlin Wall coming down. ‘The historical legacy of 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell and the cold war thawed, is as political as the upheavals of that decisive year.\u2019 More details on that as the program unfolds.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, well, well! President Obama is addressing the assembled multitudes in Berlin at the Brandenburg Gate. He\u2019s on the giant screens over there. I don\u2019t know if it\u2019s taped or if he\u2019s live. Whatever it was, he had the God echo in there. He had the godlike echo in there. Here comes Merkel. She\u2019s approaching the podium. Hillary just finished. It\u2019s pouring rain over there so they had these poor people holding umbrellas for these dignitaries who are out there speaking. Obama said, ‘The work of freedom is never over.\u2019 He left out a word: ‘The work of [ending] freedom is never over.\u2019<\/p>\n

Today does mark the 20th anniversary of the Berlin Wall starting to come down. It was midnight 20 years ago that East Germans were allowed to travel past the wall from East Berlin and West Berlin, and exercise their freedoms. When Ronald Reagan demanded of Gorbachev in 1987, ‘Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall,\u2019 it came true, two years later on this date. President Reagan is all but forgotten, it seems, in media coverage of this event. He was not alone in his belief in the importance and power of freedom.
