RUSH: All right, Chris in Syracuse, Indiana. Thank you for calling. You\u2019re next on the Open Line Friday edition of the program. Hi.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Hello? Yeah, Rush, as a matter of fact I\u2019m from Elkhart, Indiana, where they used to make Alka-Seltzer. I\u2019m calling because I was sawing logs and stacking wood last Wednesday listening to your radio program when you — I think it was like the third hour — started bashing Ron Gettelfinger, calling trade unionists leeeeeeeeches who only complain and whine about our evil management. I wanted to tell you, I\u2019m a 30-year union person. I\u2019ve collectively bargained. I\u2019ve been a union steward, a union president.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Which means you\u2019ve held people up.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (incredulous) I\u2019ve ‘held them up\u2019!<\/p>\n

RUSH: I\u2019m kidding. I\u2019m sorry. It\u2019s been a fun day. You\u2019re collective bargaining.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes. And I took exception with your characterization of trade unionists. You know, um, organized —<\/p>\n

RUSH: I am not talking about the members. I have been very clear about this. It\u2019s why I mentioned Gettelfinger. I\u2019m talking about union leaders. I don\u2019t remember. Was this this past Wednesday two days ago, or was it last week?<\/p>\n

CALLER: It was on the 20th. We were outside stacking —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Okay, two days ago.<\/p>\n

CALLER: — wood after we saw this.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, I have to… I\u2019m not disputing. I would have to get the transcript to find out exactly what I was talking about. Was it relationship to the union all of a sudden deciding they don\u2019t want to own Chrysler?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, they don\u2019t want to manage Chrysler.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah. That was what I was talking about?<\/p>\n

CALLER: But they\u2019re using their pension monies to help bail them out, and the UAW has —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yes. Isn\u2019t that wonderful?<\/p>\n

CALLER: This is the second time that the UAW has done it.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Pension money to bail them out? There\u2019s nothing constitutional about this bailout! That\u2019s what\u2019s all wrong with this. The union is being given 55% of the stock and Gettelfinger said after a while, ‘We don\u2019t want that. We\u2019re going to sell that and fund our retirement program.\u2019 So they don\u2019t want to run it. I remember what I said. They don\u2019t want to run the company; they want to leech off it. I probably did say that.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes, you said ‘leech.\u2019 That was the reference you made, and I\u2019ve listened to you for several years and your attitude toward organized labor… I mean, I don\u2019t understand something. Where do you think most of the leadership comes from in organized labor other than the rank-and-file? <\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, don\u2019t make me say. Don\u2019t make me.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Can I make my point? My point is this.<\/p>\n

RUSH: They\u2019ll Frank Sinatra me if I answer that. I don\u2019t want to go there.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Stop with the La Cozza (sic) Nostra.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I didn\u2019t say anything about that, now. See this is why… You\u2019re making too many assumptions here, Chris.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Okay.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I\u2019ve got nothing… I have said… Let me be clear. I\u2019ve got about 45 seconds here.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Okay.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I have nothing against anybody who works in this country, nothing. I don\u2019t like people who want to get paid more for doing less, but you don\u2019t like the focal point of union leadership being to elect pure, unadulterated liberal Democrats and so forth. If people want to join a union, that\u2019s fine. I just hope they know what they\u2019re getting into when they do it, that they\u2019re sacrificing their own ability to earn money based on their individual performance because you become part of a group. You become part of a contract. But I have nothing against anybody who works.<\/p>\n

CALLER: That\u2019s not true.<\/p>\n

RUSH: What\u2019s not true?<\/p>\n

CALLER: (snorting) Well, number one, which part of it? The part about COPE was not true.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Can we get your phone number? Because I\u2019ve gotta go.<\/p>\n

CALLER: You could, yes. Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: We\u2019ll call you next week.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I would love to talk to you.<\/p>\n
