CALLER: Hey, Rush. How are you doing?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Excellent, sir. Thanks.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019m really happy to talk to you.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well! Same here.<\/p>\n

CALLER: By the way, I just wanted to mention, Snerdley sounds a lot younger than a person by the name of ‘Snerdley\u2019 should sound like.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Don\u2019t be fooled by the sound of voices. We in radio learned that long ago. You know, when I was a deejay, a Top 40 deejay, the groupies would call you and make requests, and I tell you I got fooled I can\u2019t tell you how many times. Voices don\u2019t match faces. Just trust me.<\/p>\n

CALLER: He actually looks like he\u2019s 82? That\u2019s what Snerdley sounds like?<\/p>\n

RUSH: No. Snerdley sounds 82 to you?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah! ‘Snerdley\u2019 sounds like a guy who\u2019s like all decrepit.<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, he\u2019s nowhere near 82. Not even half that.<\/p>\n

CALLER: That\u2019s what I\u2019m saying. He just sounds younger than his name ‘Snerdley.\u2019<\/p>\n

RUSH: I just think (depressed voice), ‘Hello, Limbaugh Show?\u2019 You gotta do this 15 hours a week. I try to tell him to stay enthusiastic and to treat every call like he\u2019s never answered the phone before.<\/p>\n

CALLER: He doesn\u2019t quite do that, but he does pretty good. But I\u2019m calling about your Top 40 thing. You and I have something in common. We\u2019re both KQV Radio alumni.<\/p>\n

RUSH: KQV Pittsburgh?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: 1410?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You worked at KQV?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes, I did. You were with them when they were Top 40, right?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yes.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Okay. And then they went news-and-talk, and you left.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, they want Chinese opera first. That\u2019s when I got blown out. <\/p>\n

CALLER: They did what?<\/p>\n

RUSH: They went Chinese opera. Then they went news-talk.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh. I don\u2019t even know what Chinese opera is.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, some wacko format. I don\u2019t know what it was.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh.<\/p>\n

RUSH: But they were losing to 13Q.<\/p>\n

CALLER: 13Q? I don\u2019t even remember them.<\/p>\n

RUSH: WJAS, 1320 AM.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, yeah, they\u2019re a (garbled) thing!<\/p>\n

RUSH: They were doing all kinds of crazy things with the transmitter, making it… It just had a better signal at night than KQV did.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I always wondered why. I figured the news-and-talk was coming up and you\u2019re Top 40, so you had to leave. I figured if that\u2019s the case that would be the greatest irony in radio history.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah. (laughing)<\/p>\n

CALLER: If you\u2019d have just stuck around a little bit, you\u2019d have been a talk-show guy earlier.<\/p>\n

RUSH: (laughing) That\u2019s actually an excellent point. They did go news-talk. That\u2019s actually an excellent point that you\u2019re making. <\/p>\n

CALLER: That\u2019s great. You should have stuck around.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You know, I worked with Jim Quinn. Jim Quinn — who\u2019s on our FM blowtorch WPGB in Pittsburgh, who does the morning show — did nights at KQV before I did. But yeah… I\u2019m trying to think. I\u2019ve really… (sigh) I got blown out at KQV not because they went Chinese opera, but they did. They were changing formats or some such thing. Your desire for irony is closer than you think, but everything worked out as it should have, and I love Pittsburgh.
