<\/p>\nRUSH: This is Annette in Fairfield, California. I\u2019m glad to have you on the program. Hi.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Hi there. I\u2019m really glad to be there. I\u2019ve been trying to get in to tell you this little story. My grandchildren are no longer playing cops and robbers or cowboys and Indians like we did when we were kids. Now they\u2019re playing homeless.<\/p>\n
RUSH: (laughing) Okay. I\u2019ll bite.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Okay.<\/p>\n
RUSH: How do you play homeless?<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
CALLER: A couple years ago I bought my granddaughter one of those little grocery carts that you can get like you see beginning shoppers, and —<\/p>\n
RUSH: Wait, wait, wait, wait. I sadly, or no, I do not have young crumb crunchers. So are there toy shopping carts? Is that what you\u2019re saying?<\/p>\n
CALLER: This particular one is one that I got at a store that was going out of business.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Is it a miniature, or was it real one, just small?<\/p>\n
CALLER: It\u2019s miniature, and it\u2019s very sturdy. It\u2019s not one of the plastic ones.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Okay. All right.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Anyway, I thought, well, this will last —<\/p>\n
RUSH: Suitable for a child homeless person to live in and call home.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Exactly, exactly. I thought, well, this is a good thing. This will last her awhile, and, you know, you can always put the extra toys in or whatever you want to do. Well, anyway, my daughter went out and the kids were out in the backyard playing, and they had the grocery cart with them, and there was a ruckus going on. And she said, \u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re just playing homeless, Mom. It\u2019s okay.\u201d And she said, \u201cWhat?\u201d They were playing homeless. The two little boys were fighting over the grocery cart, and my granddaughter was sitting off to the side kind of just watching it. So my daughter said, \u201cWhy do you have gloves on?\u201d \u201cOh,\u201d she said, \u201c\u2019Cause the guy down at Ralph\u2019s has gloves on, and so I wanted to, you know, copy him.\u201d<\/p>\n
RUSH: Ralph\u2019s, the supermarket, behemoth chain, yes.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Right. This is LA. And so she said, \u201cWell, what are you doing?\u201d She said, “Well, I\u2019m sitting here managing.\u201d And she said, \u201cWhat do you mean managing?\u201d \u201cWell, we have this camp here and I just thought there should be a manager, so I\u2019m the manager.\u201d<\/p>\n
RUSH: Wait. Your granddaughter is off on the side while a couple of young boys are fighting for home, fighting for the shopping cart.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Yeah. Yeah.<\/p>\n
RUSH: She\u2019s wearing gloves watching it sort of —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah. To copy the guy at Ralph\u2019s.<\/p>\n
RUSH: To copy the guy at Ralph\u2019s. But what\u2019s Ralph\u2019s gotta do with homelessness?<\/p>\n
CALLER: Well, that\u2019s where she had seen them.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Oh, the homeless people go to Ralph\u2019s?<\/p>\n
CALLER: Well, they hang out at the front, sure, in the parking lot, whatever.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Oh.<\/p>\n
CALLER: This is LA, remember.<\/p>\n
RUSH: I know. I thought they were at Skid Row in LA down the street from the police station.<\/p>\n
CALLER: No, no, no. They\u2019re in the neighborhoods. They\u2019ve taken over the little park down the street.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Well, I know the shopping cart is their home, you can find videos, the homeless advocates, on how to give people shopping carts. Can you imagine that as a definition of compassion? \u201cHere, homeless guy, I love you, I care about you, take this shopping cart, have it be your new home.\u201d<\/p>\n
CALLER: Sure.<\/p>\n
RUSH: They end up feeling good about it.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Look how shiny it is.<\/p>\n
RUSH: And they put all their earthly belongings in it and start trudging around town. So the game of homeless, these two guys are fighting over the cart, the too young — how old is your granddaughter at the time —<\/p>\n
CALLER: My granddaughter is 9.<\/p>\n
RUSH: She\u2019s 9 and the guys that she\u2019s playing are the same age?<\/p>\n
CALLER: The boys are 4 and 5.<\/p>\n
RUSH: So 4- and 5-year-olds are fighting over the home.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Hm-hm.<\/p>\n
RUSH: And your granddaughter\u2019s wearing gloves off to the side.<\/p>\n
CALLER: It\u2019s hysterical when you first hear about it, and then you think, oh, my God. How horrible is this?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, yeah, but we still need more information. They\u2019re playing homeless, but aside from fighting over the shopping cart, what else does it involve?<\/p>\n
CALLER: I\u2019m not really sure, because I don\u2019t think it lasted very long.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Well, I was gonna say, because neither of them actually are homeless.<\/p>\n
CALLER: No, and there really wasn\u2019t much in the grocery cart to fight over because they hadn\u2019t really had enough time to accumulate (crosstalk) —<\/p>\n
RUSH: This is a real tough question. Do you think, whether they knew it or not, were they making fun of the homeless or were they trying to be like them?<\/p>\n
CALLER: Hard to say, \u2019cause I wasn\u2019t there. This is just a report from my daughter. Probably (crosstalk) —<\/p>\n
RUSH: Oh, you were not an eyewitness to this?<\/p>\n
CALLER: No, but I do have a photograph.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Oh. Your descriptive powers are such that it sounds like you were there.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Well, I do have a photograph. That\u2019s the advantage I have.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Well, that would help.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n
RUSH: It definitely would help.<\/p>\n
CALLER: So I thought you would know or would like to know what passes for entertainment in California.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Well, I don\u2019t think you have anything to worry about unless — unless — your granddaughter takes these two guys to a Dumpster to teach them how to dive.<\/p>\n
CALLER: (chuckling) I don\u2019t think that\u2019s gonna happen.<\/p>\n
RUSH: If they\u2019re playing homeless with shopping carts now, you can\u2019t be sure.<\/p>\n
CALLER: (chuckling) I think —<\/p>\n
RUSH: You can\u2019t take the chance. You gotta make sure they don\u2019t think there\u2019s something romantic about Dumpsters.<\/p>\n
CALLER: I suspect my daughter took care of that. She\u2019s, uh… She\u2019s pretty levelheaded.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Ha-ha. Okay.<\/p>\n
CALLER: But I just thought you\u2019d like to know.<\/p>\n
RUSH: I love hearing the story. I\u2019m envisioning this.<\/p>\n
CALLER: (chuckling)<\/p>\n
RUSH: I\u2019m seeing them playing homeless. Of course, a lot of people think it\u2019s much healthier than playing cowboys and Indians with fake guns.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Well, cowboys and Indians or cops and robbers. That\u2019s probably not allowed anymore (crosstalk) —<\/p>\n
RUSH: No, like dodgeball. Dodgeball isn\u2019t allowed —<\/p>\n
CALLER: It\u2019s pretty violent.<\/p>\n
RUSH: — other than at the (crosstalk) —<\/p>\n
CALLER: You know, we used to play nurses and war, you know, soldiers and —<\/p>\n
RUSH: Oh, we still do that!<\/p>\n
CALLER: (laughing)<\/p>\n
RUSH: Nobody\u2019s ever given up playing doctor and nurse.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Well, I\u2019ve given up my nurse\u2019s cap for the homemaker thing, so, yeah.<\/p>\n
RUSH: All right.<\/p>\n
CALLER: You\u2019ll rarely find me out in the yard.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Let me tell you something: If they stop playing doctor and the nurse?<\/p>\n
CALLER: That\u2019s a whole other game.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Well, it\u2019s a time to maybe be concerned here.<\/p>\n
CALLER: That\u2019s a whole ‘nother game so, anyway —<\/p>\n
RUSH: Depending on these guys —<\/p>\n
CALLER: — be careful when you get a grocery cart.<\/p>\n
RUSH: These two boys that were fighting over the shopping carts, how were they dressed, how were they attired?<\/p>\n
CALLER: (laughing) Are you sure? (laughing)<\/p>\n
