Last Monday, two 9\/11 terrorist defendants were in a Guantanamo Bay courtroom. Relatives of some of the 9\/11 victims, also in the courtroom, were stunned by what they heard: “We did what we did; we\u2019re proud of September 11th,” declared defendant Ramzi Binalshibh. The other– Khalid Sheikh Mohammed– complained that he has been unable to see his family during his incarceration. Both want to plead guilty to these charges that they were masterminds in the worst attacks on American soil.<\/p>\n

It may not matter, though. Hours after taking the oaf of office, President Barack Obama ordered prosecutors to request a four-month suspension of Gitmowar-crimes trials. He wants to review the military tribunal system that was painstakingly put into place to deliver justice to these guys.<\/p>\n

A lawyer for another terrorist, Omar Khadr, who stands accused of killing an American soldier with a hand grenade, said that Obama\u2019s order “has the practical effect of stopping the process, probably forever.” A spokesman announced that the European Union Commission was “very pleased” that this was one of Obama\u2019s first actions. The ACLU called it a positive step. Human Rights First, a fringe leftist wacko group, praised the move as well,but demanded more –saying this is “only a first step.”<\/p>\n

Some families of the victims– whose voices don\u2019t matter as much as European Union commissioners or human rights activists– undoubtedly feel betrayed, but that\u2019stoo bad. Because this is “hope”, and this is “change”.This…is the new America. <\/p>\n
