CALLER: I\u2019m good. How are you?<\/p>\n
RUSH: I couldn\u2019t be better. Thank you.<\/p>\n
CALLER: (chuckles) So I\u2019m a recent college graduate, and my question today: I\u2019m going into the scientific industry, and I\u2019ve had a lot of people tell me that I can\u2019t be a Republican or conservative, being my age and being a woman in my industry. And I was wondering kind of how to keep politics out of the workplace and how to react to these people that tell me I\u2019m terrible and stuff like that. (chuckles)<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
RUSH: It\u2019s not hard to keep politics out of it. The problem is that the left, the people telling you who you can\u2019t be and what you can\u2019t be. They\u2019re the ones that politicize everything.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n
RUSH: They\u2019re the ones that — whether they know it or not — are gonna be taunting you. They\u2019re gonna be insulting you, if they find out. How many people are gonna be where you\u2019re working?<\/p>\n
CALLER: I\u2019ll be working in a lab. So it\u2019s about 20 of us. But my mom is in politics so oftentimes people find out about it whether I try and bring it up or not. But I\u2019ve had people find out about it and somewhat kind of dismiss me, just because of my family and it\u2019s very disturbing.<\/p>\n
RUSH: You have got the job, though?<\/p>\n
CALLER: Yes, I have the job.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Okay. Even with that you have people telling you that you can\u2019t do this because of your politics?<\/p>\n
CALLER: Yeah, and they\u2019ve told me that I\u2019m gonna need to change my political views if I\u2019m ever going to be successful at my job.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Are these people who are your bosses or coworkers?<\/p>\n
CALLER: They\u2019ve been in positions above me.<\/p>\n
RUSH: That you\u2019re gonna have to change your politics.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n
RUSH: I assume that you really love what you do?<\/p>\n
CALLER: I love what I do, and I do what I love, because I want to help people through research. So it\u2019s frustrating. (chuckles)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Oh, I… Look, I understand totally. I appreciate personally what you\u2019re encountering here, and the temptation… You don\u2019t want to have to hide your beliefs. You don\u2019t want to have to hide who you are. You don\u2019t want to ram it down people\u2019s throats, either.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Right!<\/p>\n
RUSH: But that\u2019s what they do.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Right.<\/p>\n
RUSH: They\u2019re in the process of right now of ramming it down your throat what you can and can\u2019t be. They\u2019re trying to manipulate you, humiliate you — intimidate you, really, is what they\u2019re trying to do. You can withstand this with your natural charm and your non- and unthreatening personality and stature, if you just focus on the job.<\/p>\n
CALLER: I\u2019m going to!<\/p>\n
RUSH: And when they throw this garbage at you, just smile.<\/p>\n
CALLER: (chuckles)<\/p>\n
RUSH: you don\u2019t have to react to it. Just smile.<\/p>\n
CALLER: I like that.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Just smile. And whatever you do… You like the job, so you want to keep doing the job. You want to do the job for whoever benefits from it, including you.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Mmm-hmm.<\/p>\n
RUSH: So don\u2019t fall prey to the taunts that are inevitable. If they find out who you are and what you believe, they\u2019ll come up and something will happen with Trump or something and they\u2019ll try to make you feel like a fool and try to make you feel bad, just smile.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Just smile. I like that. (chuckling)<\/p>\n
RUSH: Just smile at them. Smiling is disarming.<\/p>\n
CALLER: (chuckling) Kill them with kindness.<\/p>\n
RUSH: You\u2019ll get to the point they will think your smiling at them is your attempt to dominate them and to manipulate them or intimidate them. But if they\u2019re in positions of authority over you, there\u2019s nothing you can do about that. You have to abide by whatever superiors tell you as long as you can. But —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Mmm-hmm. Do I have to agree with what they\u2019re saying or just keep the smile thing?<\/p>\n
RUSH: Well, depends if you want to try to fake it to disarm them, then you better be prepared to fake it every day thereafter.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Mmm-hmm.<\/p>\n
RUSH: If you\u2019re gonna try to fake that you\u2019re not who you are politically, if you\u2019re gonna try to fake that you agree with them —<\/p>\n
CALLER: Which isn\u2019t good! (chuckles)<\/p>\n
RUSH: — you can have fun doing that, you know.<\/p>\n
CALLER: (laughing)<\/p>\n
RUSH: I couldn\u2019t! (laughing) I couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
CALLER: I don\u2019t think I could, either. (laughing)<\/p>\n
RUSH: But just smile at them and I guarantee you there are gonna be times it\u2019s gonna be hard as hell. They are gonna tick you off, \u2019cause these people are not… I mean, they may be bright at what they do but some of the things they believe betray what you would think is natural intelligence. “How could somebody think the way they do?” But that\u2019s what they\u2019re gonna think about you at the same time.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Mmm-hmm.<\/p>\n
RUSH: I would just smile at them and do the work and let your work at this place, your scientific research speak for itself. But it\u2019s still gonna be, if they\u2019re already telling you, “You can\u2019t do it!” If they\u2019re already telling you, “You can\u2019t be who you are and do this job at the same time, there\u2019s a part of you,” you know, you are no doubt saying, “Who the hell do you people think you are, anyway?” Right?<\/p>\n
CALLER: Mmm-hmm.<\/p>\n
RUSH: And —<\/p>\n
CALLER: Thank you so much.<\/p>\n
RUSH: You\u2019re welcome. I know it\u2019ll work, as long as you stay focused on the job.<\/p>\n
