RUSH: We\u2019re going to go back to yesterday\u2019s audio sound bite roster. Remember now Charlie Rose and Tom Brokaw a week ago today, (paraphrasing) ‘We don\u2019t know anything about him. It\u2019s an interesting question, he\u2019s written two books, largely autobiographical, we really don\u2019t know what his views on China are, Charlie.\u2019 So they didn\u2019t know anything about him, and here Wednesday night, again on the Charlie Rose Show, we had a couple of clowns from Newsweek, Evan Thomas and Jon Meacham, and they\u2019re talking about Obama and how Saul Alinsky is a big community organizer, dedicated his book to Satan, the first real conscientious objector to power. Here\u2019s their conversation.<\/p>\n

THOMAS: Saul Alinsky is, uh, really was a model from this, er, famous community organizer in Chicago, and this whole idea that Alinsky had that it\u2019s not gonna work if you offend large groups of people. You know, we think of community organizers as having their fist out and, you know? Ah, no, no, no, no, no. You have to win over the majority by being peaceful and nonthreatening. Saul Alinsky used the word ‘nonthreatening.\u2019 This is key to Obama. There\u2019s no militancy involved. This is very important and — and his chief strategist, Axelrod, really understood this. Especially if you\u2019re running a black guy for president, you cannot threaten the whites.<\/p>\n

RUSH: All right, this is just indication all they knew that they didn\u2019t report about Obama and his associations and his alliances and how Obama was playing the game. Now, these next two, these are the piece de resistance, Jon Meacham and Evan Thomas of Newsweek admit and discuss, there\u2019s something creepy about Obama.<\/p>\n

MEACHAM: He\u2019s very elusive, Obama, which is fascinating for a man who\u2019s written two memoirs. At Grant Park he walks out with the family, and then they go away. <\/p>\n

ROSE: Mmm. Mmm-hmm.<\/p>\n

MEACHAM: Biden\u2019s back, you know, locked in the bar or something. <\/p>\n

ROSE: (haughty chuckle)<\/p>\n

MEACHAM: You know, they don\u2019t let him out. And have you ever seen a victory speech where there was no one else on stage? <\/p>\n

ROSE: Mmm.<\/p>\n

MEACHAM: No adoring wife, no cute kid. He is the messenger.<\/p>\n

THOMAS: There is a slightly creepy cult of personality about all this. I mean, he\u2019s such an admirable —<\/p>\n

ROSE: Slightly. Creepy. Cult of personality.<\/p>\n

THOMAS: Yes.<\/p>\n

ROSE: What\u2019s slightly creepy about it?<\/p>\n

THOMAS: It — it — it just makes me a little uneasy that he\u2019s so singular. He\u2019s clearly managing his own spectacle. He\u2019s a deeply manipulative guy.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Okay. Sorry, I can\u2019t stop laughing at this stuff. I know it should outrage me, but I just have to laugh. These guys, they\u2019ve been bugged by Obama all this time, they buried it, and only now they are starting to, ‘slightly creepy cult of personality about this that just makes me a little uneasy, so singular, clearly managing his own spectacle, he\u2019s a deeply manipulative guy.\u2019 Now, what they\u2019re saying folks, ‘We have seen this before, and we don\u2019t like it.\u2019 You are hearing fear expressed here. ‘We have seen this before. It\u2019s a slightly creepy cult of personality,\u2019 just swipes the wife and the kids off the stage. Does it all himself. Just manipulative, managing his own spectacle, so singular. It\u2019s creepy. We\u2019ve seen this before. These are the Newsweek guys, and here you go, the finale.<\/p>\n

ROSE: Watching him last night in that speech, he finishes —<\/p>\n

MEACHAM: Yeah.<\/p>\n

ROSE: — and he sort of — it\u2019s almost like he then ascends to look at the circumstance.<\/p>\n

MEACHAM: He watches us watching him.<\/p>\n

THOMAS: Watching him!<\/p>\n

ROSE: Exactly!<\/p>\n

THOMAS: He does —<\/p>\n

MEACHAM: It\u2019s amazing.<\/p>\n

ROSE: It is amazing.<\/p>\n

THOMAS: He writes about this metaphor being a screen upon which Americans will project. He said they want of Barack Obama; I\u2019m not sure I am Barack Obama. <\/p>\n

ROSE: Mmm.<\/p>\n

THOMAS: He has the self-awareness to know that this creature he\u2019s designed isn\u2019t necessarily a real person, and he\u2019s self-aware enough —<\/p>\n

ROSE: Ahhhhhh.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Right. These people are nuts. These people are just flat-out nuts. They are now saying The Messiah ascends after his speech. He ascends and he watches us watching him. He has a self-awareness to know that this creature he\u2019s designed isn\u2019t necessarily a real person. That was Evan Thomas, who David ‘Rodham\u2019 Gergen, if you\u2019re listening, Evan Thomas just called the first black president a creature. A creepy creature, creepy cult of personality creature. Uneasy, so singular, he\u2019s a creepy creature. He ascends to heights and watches us watching him. This creature he\u2019s designed isn\u2019t necessarily a reason person. What, are they calling him a phony? Yes indeed they are. <\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n

RUSH: Remember in 2004, ladies and gentlemen, after the election was over, Newsweek magazine started running in-depth stories that they had not reported during the campaign on both George W. Bush and the haughty John Kerry (who served in Vietnam). They have done it again. Now, I understand that they would not get the access they get unless they agreed to keep all this stuff off the record until after the election. <\/p>\n

But there\u2019s part of me that wonders about the journalistic malpractice of this kind of thing. Here they are given this access; they learn things about both candidates that they do not report. Instead, they stick with the template that is in this election, ‘We gotta get Obama elected. He\u2019s the greatest thing since sliced bread.\u2019 Listen to some of these excerpts — and we just had the sound bites of Meacham and be Evan Thomas, who I\u2019m sure were involved with writing this story, talking about how ‘creepy\u2019 Obama is. He ‘ascends and watches people watching him,\u2019 and he\u2019s manipulative. He\u2019s a ‘creature,\u2019 created something. He\u2019s a character that doesn\u2019t really exist. He\u2019s not real and so forth. They\u2019re very troubled by this. We\u2019ve seen this before. Here are some excerpts from this Newsweek story: ‘Obama could marshal a lawyerly set of arguments about how he could win, that the country was at a ‘defining point\u2019 and that Obama was the best hope to bring change.\u2019<\/p>\n

Quote: ”I, I, I actually believe my own rhetoric,\u2019 Obama stammered, uncharacteristically, in an interview with NEWSWEEK in the spring of 2008.\u2019 Also from this story: ‘Barack Obama can be cocky about his star power.\u2019 Here is another excerpt: ‘Obama was growing accustomed to adulation. … At Coretta Scott King\u2019s funeral in early 2006, Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert Kennedy, leaned over to him and whispered, ‘The torch is being passed to you.\u2019 ‘A chill went up my spine,\u2019 Obama told an aide.\u2019 That\u2019s when the ‘tingle\u2019 went up Chris Matthews\u2019 leg. This is the funeral that the Clintons crashed, remember that? We put together our funeral crashers bit. The Clintons were showing up every time Democrats died. <\/p>\n

Also this from the Newsweek story: ‘Obama understood that he had become a giant screen upon which Americans projected their hopes and fears, dreams and frustrations. Maybe such a person never really existed, couldn\u2019t exist, but people wanted a savior nonetheless.\u2019 That\u2019s not Obama; that\u2019s Newsweek writing about Obama. Finally this: ‘As a bestselling memoirist he had created a mythic figure, a man named Barack Obama who had searched and quested and overcome travails, who had found an identity and a calling in public service. Obama recalled that he often joked with his team, ‘This Barack Obama sounds like a great guy. Now I\u2019m not sure that I am Barack Obama, right?\u2019 He added, pointedly, ‘It wasn\u2019t entirely a joke.” <\/p>\n

This is why these guys are now out there saying he\u2019s a creature; he\u2019s not even a real person. He created this myth. I hate to be… Never mind. I just knew all this. There\u2019s nothing… Sorry. It was always a joke. It was always a scam. It was always a sham. This is nothing more than Princess Di dying and everybody wanted to be part of the story, all these huge crowds and so forth. That\u2019s why I\u2019m telling you, folks: they created a myth. They created a creature. He\u2019s not who he is. He\u2019s even joking about it, Newsweek. Lots of people are going to be disappointed.
