CALLER: Good afternoon, Rush. I am a conservative who just happens to be black. And I wanted to personally thank you for your commentary, but more so than your commentary, I wanted to thank you for the information you provide with it, because that\u2019s what ties everything together.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Thank you. I appreciate that, sir, very much.<\/p>\n
CALLER: I wanted to give you a brief explanation of how I came upon this journey of being conservative, especially coming from the black community. As you would say, at 17 I was a young skull full of mush. I was beaten over the head and terrified that if I didn\u2019t vote for Jimmy Carter in my first election we were basically gonna go back to slavery. Well, I did notice that after he was elected it got worse, not necessarily for black America, but just for America in general. So I chalked that one up.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Then Reagan came along, and I really heard, we were about to get lynched, we were about to basically go back to slavery. And that didn\u2019t happen. And I noticed that America actually got a little bit better overall. I\u2019m like, okay, what\u2019s going on? I\u2019m the kind of person that needs to know why. So your show came along. And at the time I heard somebody talking about how you were racist. So, much like the Mueller investigation, I embarked upon a journey to find out, to see what was going on.<\/p>\n
So after 20 years, just like the Mueller investigation, I finally had to close the investigation down after finding out that you have not colluded with or have ever been a racist. And just like the Mueller investigation, people are not happy with it, and they\u2019re still spreading the propaganda that you must have somehow been this way and there\u2019s no way to disprove it. So after 20 years of investigation, you\u2019ve been cleared, and I just wanted to personally let you know that.<\/p>\n
RUSH: I love this! I love this analogy! You conducted a 20-year investigation which required frequent, constant listening —<\/p>\n
CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n
RUSH: — to try to root out and detect any of the racism that you heard — there\u2019s Crazy Bernie, look at that bandage! Anyway. You sought this investigation and 20 years, and you\u2019re just now on the verge of closing it without finding any evidence of racism here on this program or by me.<\/p>\n
CALLER: And the people who wanted me to initiate the investigation are not happy and they\u2019re still determined to say that you\u2019re racist, just like the Mueller investigation. No matter what you do, you must be racist. Which leads me to my final point if I could make it.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Yeah.<\/p>\n
CALLER: You\u2019ve often asked in the black community why it is black America, though they have mainly conservative values, totally rejects conservatism and conservatives for the most part. And I think I have the answer to that.<\/p>\n
RUSH: What is it?<\/p>\n
CALLER: If you\u2019re in the black community — and most blacks do practice conservatism, anti-abortion, free speech, gun rights — but to embrace conservative ideology and those who represent it well, you would in fact have to dismiss all that you have been taught and admit that those who taught you were wrong in what they presented to you, which would be much akin to having a father that you thought was the greatest person in the world and then realizing he was either a criminal or a bad person. It\u2019s hard to reconcile —<\/p>\n
RUSH: Yeah. (crosstalk)<\/p>\n
CALLER: — from somebody that you trust.<\/p>\n
RUSH: It\u2019s an excellent point. Can you walk me through something?<\/p>\n
CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You\u2019ve heard during the Reagan years how bad it was gonna be, bad it was gonna get, going back to slavery, whatever else they said, and you\u2019re sitting around and you\u2019re watching the country actually get better. You\u2019re watching the economy grow, you\u2019re watching people get jobs or getting raises. But you had expected the country to go in the tank and maybe even get worse for people.<\/p>\n
I\u2019m gonna have to hold you over for the break to get the answer here so I want you to think about it, but I want you to take me back. Because this is part of your transformation. You fully expected the Reagan years to be bad for African-Americans and for you. At least you were told that was gonna be the case.<\/p>\n
CALLER: I was terrified.<\/p>\n
RUSH: When they happen and everything\u2019s going in the opposite direction, I want to know how you felt and what you thought about while this was happening to you.<\/p>\n
BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n
RUSH: Let me go back here to Paul in San Antonio. Okay. So you are sitting out there, and you\u2019re fully expecting the country to go spiraling down. You\u2019ve been told that Reagan is gonna bring back slavery and racism and the exact opposite happened. So while that\u2019s happening, while America\u2019s getting better all around you, what are you thinking?<\/p>\n
CALLER: Well, Rush, I\u2019m the type of person, I gotta know why. So I\u2019m always in search of facts or something to prove or disprove. And one of the theories that I have is, in this situation, minus the absence of information, it makes it easier to control people with emotion. So since I was in search of facts, I was starting to get out of the emotional tie that I had to what I was being taught. Because every time I would listen to you, and I started looking for other sources and I\u2019m like, okay, I\u2019m hearing this mostly in my community and in this segment of the media, but in reality, as they used to say, here\u2019s the rest of the story. And the rest of the story is usually where all the important information was.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Now, wait a minute. Hold on. Now, that\u2019s key. Because it wasn\u2019t just me telling people what I thought. What you heard me also offer was backup information or facts that were what they were regardless what I thought?<\/p>\n
CALLER: That\u2019s it. That is what got it.<\/p>\n
RUSH: So you were able to rely on not just my opinion. You were able to tell, no, I\u2019m not just telling you what he thinks, and you were able to relay information that you heard backing all that up?<\/p>\n
CALLER: Rush, you\u2019re kind of like a treasure map. You\u2019re not actually digging up the treasure, but you gave me clues as to where to find the treasure. And the treasure would be the truth.<\/p>\n
RUSH: You are filled with great analogies. So you had a 20-year investigation to try to find the racism on the program, you couldn\u2019t, and then you discovered this program is a treasure map to the truth!<\/p>\n
CALLER: (laughing) And it also led me to my three P\u2019s, which I think are important and I try to relate this to people that I talk to, and that is always vote policy over party or personality. Because party and personality are two things that vary with the wind. Policy, out of all of them, that\u2019s usually what\u2019s gonna stay in effect and change your life over a longer period of time. And it\u2019s hard to get people to see that because they get so invested into a personality and\/or a party, both of which can let you down. A policy is what it is. It states this and it\u2019s supposed to do this, and, yeah, sometimes it\u2019s subverted and used in the wrong way, but overall it\u2019s the safest way to make the right decision.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Right. ‘Cause if you find out what a person\u2019s policy really is, you\u2019ll find out who they are, not by virtue of what they say or how they say it. Look at their policy. It\u2019s like an identity. It can\u2019t be denied.<\/p>\n
CALLER: And one last thing, Rush, I just want to thank you again because with the tools that I\u2019ve — with my journey, I\u2019ve been able, I\u2019ve been invited to — because I\u2019m the lone conservative most of the time.<\/p>\n
So when somebody needs an opposing view, I\u2019m usually the one. And I had all three elements of what you usually fight against at one local event not too long ago. I had an auditorium full of college students, I had an NAACP president, and I had two local activists and I was the lone conservative up there. (laughing)<\/p>\n
RUSH: Let me tell you something, Paul. I know how you feel. You know this annual cigar dinner that I go to every April that\u2019s put on by Cigar Aficionado? It\u2019s a fundraiser event for prostate cancer, and it\u2019s in Manhattan. Of course, we can\u2019t do it anymore because this idiot de Blasio will not even grant a two-hour exemption to smoke cigars at the restaurant. So raising money for prostate cancer\u2019s no longer possible.<\/p>\n

But I for the first 10 to 12 years was the only conservative that showed up at these things. Jeff Greenfield would get up and make his remarks and make snide, snarky comments about things that I hadn\u2019t even said that night that I might believe or not belive. I know what it feels like to be outnumbered, especially by a bunch of arrogant, condescending people who think they know everything.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Can I tell you one last thing? I did use one of your ploys at the end of the meeting. One of the college students got up, I had said that there was no such thing as systemic racism at this time, and they jumped up and there was a line of people to ask me about this, \u201cWell, how can you say that?\u201d<\/p>\n
I said, \u201cIf there\u2019s systemic racism, that means everybody\u2019s involved. So if everybody\u2019s involved, what makes you think that you protesting against your oppressors and telling them to stop oppressing you is gonna work?\u201d And she couldn\u2019t answer that. I was like, that makes no sense. I said, \u201cThink about it. All the cities that you\u2019re talking about, these shootings and the police, are happening in, the same people that say they\u2019re on your side, which would be the Democrats, are also the ones that run these cities, which makes them run those police departments. So how much sense does your argument make?\u201d<\/p>\n
RUSH: Well, you know what you\u2019re running up against? You\u2019re running up basically against robots. I mean, they\u2019re programmed from birth to believe and say certain things that they can\u2019t possibly explain. You can expose \u2019em with your simple question. \u201cIf it\u2019s systemic, it\u2019s everybody, and isn\u2019t everybody, so what are you talking about?\u201d And you\u2019ve got \u2019em. They don\u2019t know how to answer you at that point.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Yeah, they were taught what to think, not how to think, and that\u2019s what I try to do whenever I get a chance. And I\u2019ve learned not to get frustrated just like you say. Because if I took it personally that people don\u2019t get it, I would wiped in a nuthouse. I really would. So I just have to make my point and keep it moving. And again, I credit a lot of that with you because I listen all the time, and even though you don\u2019t tell me what to think, you lay out that road map and it\u2019s helped me a lot.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Treasure map, treasure map.<\/p>\n
CALLER: Road map, treasure map, as long as I get there.<\/p>\n
RUSH: Treasure map. Treasure map. I\u2019m stealing that one. By the way, I\u2019m not gonna steal it. I want to offer you, \u2019cause I am gonna take that.
