CALLER: Hey, Rush, since John McCain ran for president in 2008, I\u2019ve questioned if Republican elite really want to win. This Ralph Northam yearbook photo<\/a> gives me more pause. How did the Gillespie campaign and Republican elite miss that yearbook photo?<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

RUSH: I want to replay for you before I answer your question, because it\u2019s an excellent question. I want to replay for you something I said on this program on July 13th of 2017. Now, at the time we didn\u2019t know any of this Northam stuff existed. And even then I was having problems with the Gillespie campaign.<\/p>\n

The short answer to your question is the Gillespie campaign was a bunch of Never Trumpers. The Gillespie campaign was a bunch of people who thought that the way for the Republican Party to win was to have a candidate and a support staff who were the exact opposite of Donald Trump. So here\u2019s what I said July 13th, 2017.<\/a><\/p>\n

RUSH ARCHIVE: You think Virginia is the swamp and it\u2019s all Never Trumpers there, and so Gillespie hires a bunch of Never Trumpers, but he barely squeaks by in the primary. Never Trumpers and hiring a bunch of swampsters to run your campaign with a bunch of people that don\u2019t know how to get Republicans who voted for Trump, you\u2019re not gonna win the governorship!<\/p>\n

RUSH: Right. Now, your question, how in the world can anybody in a decent opposition political research department miss this Northam stuff?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Right.<\/p>\n

RUSH: It\u2019s mind-boggling, I know. The short answer is I don\u2019t think you have very many conservative Republican consultants. I think they\u2019re mostly moderates and anti-conservative. I think they\u2019re known by losing with honor. I think, in their minds, it\u2019s not win and win and win. It\u2019s, “Hey, let\u2019s win, but if we lose, let\u2019s lose with honor so that we are not confused with who the people call the bigots and the racists in our party and the pro-life hicks and hayseeds.” And so there\u2019s this built-in desire not to be seen as the typical Republican as described by media.<\/p>\n

And one of the ways that manifests itself is not really going for the jugular when you win. I mean, how do you go out and find all this stuff about Northam and then not be accused of being a racist bigot and all this stuff? So I think it kind of roadblocks them in doing what\u2019s necessary to win.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, then we shouldn\u2019t give money to their campaign if they\u2019re not gonna try to win.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah. I\u2019ve heard that. Look, I totally understand this. This stuff is manifesting itself even today. You have people that are just like the Republicans in Congress. I am convinced that a lot of these people do not want the Trump agenda to win because they don\u2019t want it to define the Republican Party any more than they want Trump to define the Republican Party. I mean, how bad is it really, if the Republican\u2019s in Washington are in the minority? How bad is it? There\u2019s no pressure to govern!<\/p>\n

When you win and when you governor, the media is out for you, they\u2019re trying to destroy you, they\u2019re lying about you, they\u2019re doing defamatory pieces on you and your family. When you\u2019re losing and you\u2019re in the minority, it\u2019s a lot smoother ride. And you still get the perks. You still get the benefits because you are a Senator or you are a member of Congress and you have whatever goes along with that. And in the eyes of your constituents you\u2019re still the guy they call when they need something done in the district or in the state.<\/p>\n

You know, it\u2019s a challenging thing. Rick, the answer to all this stuff is found in Republicans not wanting to be seen as conservatives. Why don\u2019t Republicans want to be seen as conservatives? Why does conservative mean racist, sexist, bigot, instead of Ronald Reagan 49-state landslide? Because that\u2019s how the media defines it.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m looking for something to explain this here for you, and bear with me while I find this. It\u2019s a fascinating story. It\u2019s a long, long, long story in Politico. And it is about the upstarts on the Democrat side who trying to take power away from Pelosi and her gang, and the way they are described will blow your mind. And I don\u2019t know what Stack I put this in. While I find it, let\u2019s go to back to the phones. Rick, keep your radio on and listen. I\u2019ll find this story, because this is right up the alley of what — ah! Ah! Found it. Okay. Here it is.<\/p>\n

The story is by David Freedlander in The Politico. I think it\u2019s their magazine. And the headline of the story: “There Is Going to Be a War Within the Party. We Are Going to Lean Into It.<\/a>\u201d Here\u2019s the subhead: \u201cThe Justice Democrats helped get Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez elected. Who are they after next?\u201d I want you to listen to the opening paragraph. Are you ready?<\/p>\n

“Maybe you\u2019ve heard the warning: The country is beset by a menace. A fringe conservative minority is holding Congress hostage, extracting radical policy concessions over the will of the majority. And it\u2019s leading the nation to fiscal, environmental and moral ruin. Maybe you haven\u2019t heard this part: These dangerous conservatives are Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n

And then there is a quote from somebody named Saikat Chakrabarti: \u201cI am talking about the radical conservatives in the Democratic Party.\u201d Says Saikat Chakrabarti: \u201cThat\u2019s who we need to counter. It\u2019s the same across any number of issues\u2014pay-as-you-go, free college, Medicare for all. These are all enormously popular in the party, but they don\u2019t pass because of the radical conservatives who are holding the party hostage.\u201d<\/p>\n

This story is describing Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer, John Lewis, the entire Democrat leadership, Chuck Schumer as “conservative” in order to characterize them as evil and rotten and old and tired and worn out and standing in the way. Not long ago, I approached this microphone one day and spoke to you about the branding, conservatism, conservative as a brand and how successfully the left has damaged it. And I suggested that maybe going forward we think of something else, like problem solvers or what have you.<\/p>\n

And we got a call from an angry New York conservative<\/a> who told me that he loved me and he\u2019d been here for 30 years, but after he heard that I might as well be thrown in the swamp \u2019cause I have caved. If I don\u2019t have the guts to say that we\u2019re all conservatives here, then I\u2019m not worth anything. Remember that call? He was livid. In what universe is Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer conservative?<\/p>\n

\"\"Well, right here. (tapping article) In the Ocasio-Cortez universe — and we now know that the Ocasio-Cortez group is called Justice Democrats, social justice warriors. Justice Democrats. They are an organization. So far, she is their only success story. They attempted to find a whole bunch of Cortezes to challenge Democrat Party lifetime officeholders like this guy Crowley, the Jurassic Park Democrat in the Pelosi leadership who had held that House seat in Queens for eons. Pelosi is fighting these people left and right behind the scenes, but Cortez is the only success story.<\/p>\n

This person that I quoted, Saikat Chakrabarti, is chief of staff to Cortez. Twenty-nine, former activist… I\u2019m sorry, that\u2019s Cortez. Wait a minute. Journalism… Who is this being written about? “Chakrabarti is chief of staff to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the closest thing to a new celebrity…” Well, anyway, the story is all about how their effort here is to basically Bernie Sanderize the Democrat Party, that Bernie\u2019s too old to do it, that Bernie\u2019s already proven he can\u2019t win.<\/p>\n

But Bernie\u2019s ideas are what everybody needs, and Bernie\u2019s ideas are what the Democrat Party needs to become, and Cortez and the Justice Democrats are the leaders. But that\u2019s not the point. The point of this is that in Politico, in order to defame and stigmatize and criticize Chuck You Schumer and Pelosi, this story refers to them as “conservatives”! Not Democrats, not Republicans, just “conservatives.” So let me read this again now that you know what it\u2019s saying.<\/p>\n

“Maybe you\u2019ve heard the warning: The country is beset by a menace. A fringe conservative minority is holding Congress hostage, extracting radical policy concessions over the will of the majority. And it\u2019s leading the nation to fiscal, environmental and moral ruin. Maybe you haven\u2019t heard this part: These dangerous conservatives are Democrats. ‘I am talking about the radical conservatives in the Democratic Party,\u2019 said Saikat Chakrabarti. ‘That\u2019s who we need to counter.'”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

I would suggest that this term “conservatives” is being used because, when it\u2019s used, readers are just supposed to automatically oppose it. “Conservatives.” Not Democrat, not Republican, just conservatives. Even if this guy is wrong, and even if this story is attempting to identify the Cortez gang as a bunch of conservatives… Well, it can\u2019t be that. But no matter how you read this, the Drive-By Media is attempting to discredit a segment of the Democrat Party in the minds of Democrat readers, by calling them “conservative.”<\/p>\n

RUSH: Ho-ho-ho. Ho-ho. David Brooks, the so-called conservative at the New York Times, is mad. He says he felt like the Democrats did their best to slap him in the face last week over a lot of issues, not the least of which is Northam.
