RUSH: Coeur d\u2019Alene, Idaho, this is Mary, and I\u2019m glad you waited. Hi.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Hi, Rush! I have another example for encroachment for you. I live in an apartment, and my property management company has coupled with a local utility to come through our apartments on Monday and replace our incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, you kinda have no choice there because you\u2019re not the owner.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I know. (giggles)<\/p>\n

RUSH: But have they told you of the inherent dangers? Have they given you warnings about these compact fluorescents?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, they did not. I had to tell them.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You had to tell them about the mercury content and what happens if —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: — one of these things breaks. You\u2019ve gotta have hazmat people come over and fumigate, clean out your place. You told them that?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: And what did they say?<\/p>\n

CALLER: They didn\u2019t have an answer for me because they weren\u2019t given any opt-out options, and I also asked them if they were going to have a recycling bin to put them in because you can\u2019t put them in a regular landfill and still they had no answer.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Now, is every light fixture that you have in your apartment capable of accepting a compact fluorescent?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, I mean, do you have some fluorescents in there, those long like spaghetti type lights? Do you have sconces? I don\u2019t know how your apartment is set up, but some people have dimmers.<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, we don\u2019t.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I don\u2019t know if you can dim these things or not. So let me ask you this: Have they replaced the bulbs?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Not yet. That\u2019s Monday.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Next Monday?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You keep a sharp eye on this because I want to see if they try to replace every lightbulb in your apartment with a compact fluorescent.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I will be because I\u2019m taking a day off work to watch this.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You had no choice in rejecting these?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019ve asked them to, and they said they\u2019ll make a note, but I honestly don\u2019t trust them so I\u2019m going to be there to meet them.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Are you going to try to stop them from making the switch?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I will ask them again, yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, you\u2019re not the property owner. They own the property.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: The landlord, whoever, owns the property. You\u2019re a renter. So technically if he wants to put these things in, if he wants to fall for this, he can do it.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah, I know.<\/p>\n

RUSH: But it\u2019s still — You do need to be careful with these things. Do you have kids?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, I\u2019m single.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You\u2019re single. Well, do you have boyfriends over then?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yes or no?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No. (giggles)<\/p>\n

RUSH: No. All right, because they can be clumsy. <\/p>\n

CALLER: No. (giggles)<\/p>\n

RUSH: They can be more prone to break one of these bulbs, knocking or kicking over a lamp than you might be. So I was just going to say, do you have anybody over there, you better warn them about these things is the point.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah, I know. I\u2019ll have to. ‘Please don\u2019t break that, you might kill us.\u2019 (giggles) <\/p>\n

RUSH: All right, Mary, thanks for the call. I appreciate it. It\u2019s nice that you held on.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Thank you.<\/p>\n
