CALLER: Oh, okay. (clearing throat) Excuse me. I\u2019m a first-time call, so I\u2019m a little nervous. I\u2019m 18, and I\u2019m a conservative, of course. I just had a quick question and comment about your La Scala opera comment. Where did you hear that?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Where did I hear it? I didn\u2019t hear it; I read it.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Where did you read it?<\/p>\n

RUSH: It\u2019s AP, and it\u2019s from Milan. ‘First it was the film and the book, now the next stop for Algore\u2019s movie is opera. La Scala officials say that the composer, Giorgio Battistelli, has been commissioned to produce an opera on Gore\u2019s [stupid, lying, sack-of-garbage] movie.\u2019<\/p>\n

CALLER: Right. Okay. Yeah. I understand where you\u2019re coming from. I think it\u2019s pretty hilarious myself. But I\u2019m just a little worried that you have a bias against any sort of sophisticated music. I\u2019m not much into opera because, you know, I\u2019m a religious person, and a lot of opera is very immoral. But I love classical music, and I really think the old composers were far superior than anything nowadays, and I think society is —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, wait, wait. Wait a second, John. I\u2019d love to talk about this subject with you, because I am very familiar with and have a great appreciation for and love of classical music.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Okay.<\/p>\n

RUSH: So much so that over the course of my many years trodding the soil of the planet, I have wondered why we attached the term ‘classical\u2019 to it. It was the music of its time. It was the music of its era. I don\u2019t disagree with you that it is beautiful and it\u2019s distinguished and unique and so forth. But do you think it\u2019s possible…? I know you\u2019re only 18, but do you think it\u2019s possible a couple of centuries from now that the people who are alive then, if they\u2019re still allowed to play music and record it, will look back at rap and hip-hop as classical?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Uhhh, no. I really think it is very primitive. I think there\u2019s so little sophistication in it that it\u2019s not going to last. I mean, rap is… There\u2019s a beat to it, you know? There\u2019s not much more. But, you know —<\/p>\n

RUSH: I\u2019m going to tell you something. If you watch this stuff performed, if you separate yourself from the lyrics and if you separate yourself from some of the message and the anger and the rage, some of the stuff that these classical composers wrote is very, very dark. It\u2019s very, very dark. <\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: And you know it as a classical fan, but the talent that these people have today, you can\u2019t deny their talent. They all have just… You can\u2019t deny The Beatles\u2019 talent. Now, you might not like the output of their work, and I don\u2019t, but you can\u2019t deny that they have talent. It\u2019s not something anybody could do. I\u2019m not suggesting it\u2019s going to be classical. I\u2019m just discussing with you the notion that what we call ‘classical music,\u2019 I think is time relevant in a sense.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: It comes from a specific age. You used the word ‘sophisticated\u2019 to describe it. I totally understand what you mean.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: But, John, I even have a bumper rotation song that\u2019s from Puccini.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, really?<\/p>\n
