{"id":281722,"date":"2018-08-07T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-08-07T19:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/admin.rushlimbaugh.com\/?p=281722"},"modified":"2018-08-08T15:47:05","modified_gmt":"2018-08-08T19:47:05","slug":"podhoretz-misunderstands-trumps-war-on-media","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/admin.rushlimbaugh.com\/daily\/2018\/08\/07\/podhoretz-misunderstands-trumps-war-on-media\/","title":{"rendered":"Podhoretz Misunderstands Trump\u2019s War with Media"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>RUSH: John Podhoretz, New York Post. &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/08\/06\/trumps-blame-the-media-blitz-looks-like-an-excuse-in-the-making\/\">Trump\u2019s &#8216;Blame-the-Media\u2019 Blitz Looks Like an Excuse in the Making<\/a>.&#8221; Podhoretz, JPod as he\u2019s known affectionately to his friends, is a smart guy, and he has been in and around conservative media for most of his life. But this is traditional establishment thinking. His point is that Trump\u2019s on these rallies, and he\u2019s blaming the media here and blaming the media there and talking about fake news and calling some of them the enemy of the people, fake news, the enemy of the people, all this. And in his view, any Republican that attacks the media is out of everything else to say.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-281747\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rushlimbaugh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/APP-080718-Podhoretz.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rushlimbaugh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/APP-080718-Podhoretz.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.rushlimbaugh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/APP-080718-Podhoretz-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/>In his mind, Trump ought to be extolling the virtues of his tax cuts and economic revival, which, by the way, he is, he does. Trump talks about a lot of things in an hour-and-20-minute rally. He doesn\u2019t spend all hour and 20 minutes ripping the media. And every tweet is not about ripping the media.<\/p>\n<p>Trump is probably the number one source in American media for his achievements. If it weren\u2019t for Trump\u2019s tweets, the Drive-Bys wouldn\u2019t be telling anybody about Trump\u2019s economic achievements and implementation of his agenda. Trump does, and of course conservative or alternative media.<\/p>\n<p>But the idea that Trump is constantly blaming the media is &#8212; that\u2019s what Republicans are on the verge of losing to. That\u2019s traditional Republican Party thinking. The Republican Party thinks there\u2019s nothing to gain by attacking the media, nothing at all to gain by criticizing the media. It\u2019s immature, it\u2019s childish, it doesn\u2019t recognize the rules of the game. The media is the media, and everybody in the game knows who the media is, you have to account for \u2019em. You start whining about them is the same as whining about a thunderstorm. You can\u2019t stop them. It\u2019s gonna happen.<\/p>\n<p>And again, I think there\u2019s an ongoing reluctance to try to understand Trump\u2019s base. And in these midterms, Trump\u2019s base is everything. Trump has to turn out his base in these midterms if the Republicans are to hold the House. And so he\u2019s gonna talk about the things that turned \u2019em out in the first place. He\u2019s gonna talk about immigration. He\u2019s gonna talk about the wall. He\u2019s gonna talk about the media.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s gonna talk about the things that got him elected, talk about the things that drew people to his rallies, but in the process he talks about the other things too. He doesn\u2019t give his accomplishments short shrift. He heralds them. He brags about them. He talks about how many things he had to overcome to get them done.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-281746 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rushlimbaugh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/APP-080718-Trump-Media.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rushlimbaugh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/APP-080718-Trump-Media.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.rushlimbaugh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/APP-080718-Trump-Media-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But JPod, the pull quote here, &#8220;Instead, he\u2019s trying something that has failed many times before. Driving voters to the polls by complaining about the media is an old Republican ploy that just doesn\u2019t work. One key GOP slogan in 1992 was &#8216;Annoy the Media, Re-elect Bush,\u2019 which neither annoyed the media nor reelected Bush.&#8221; No, that&#8230; But, see, by 1992 Bush had blown it with his base. &#8220;Read my lips: No new taxes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Well, he raised taxes. Bush had lost his base. He was trying to recapture it, and going after the media was one way of doing it, but it was too little, too late. You can\u2019t compare &#8220;Annoy the media, reelect Bush&#8221; to Trump\u2019s ongoing battle with the media, because the media is clearly anti-Trump and is trying to defeat Trump and is trying to gyp Trump out of the election. The media is every bit all-in, as the Democrat Party is.<\/p>\n<p>Trump, I don\u2019t think, is complaining about it. I think he\u2019s reminding people. It\u2019s a big difference. Do you get the impression he\u2019s complaining about the media, Mr. Snerdley? (interruption) How about you, Scott? (interruption) Do you get the impression&#8230;? (interruption) No. He\u2019s not complaining about the media. I think he loves talking about it.
