RUSH: John Heilemann. This is a guy who used to have a show with Mark Halperin, the now noted sexual harasser who was forced from his gig at MSNBC and wherever else when it was discovered just how abusive and mistreating he was toward women. Heilemann was his buddy, so Heilemann\u2019s now doing a solo gig with other partners over on NBC and MSNBC.<\/p>\n

\"\"He slipped up last night during conversation about immigration. He admitted he\u2019s a Democrat (chuckling) before immediately walking back. He said, “You can\u2019t inflict this kind of policy on Americans and not pay a political price,” Heilemann told Nicolle Wallace at MSNBC. He\u2019s talking about Trump. (impression) “You can\u2019t do this! You can\u2019t separate parents from their children on the border and not pay a political price! By God, we\u2019re gonna make you pay a political price. You can\u2019t do that — even though Obama did it, too.<\/p>\n

“But we didn\u2019t care because we were never gonna hurt Obama. But we\u2019re gonna kill you, Trump. We\u2019re gonna take you out, Trump.” So he said, “We have a great chance to inflict a political price on Trump and his party in November. We… I mean the Democratic Party.” Then he quickly tried to cover his tracks. “Ah, ah, ah! I\u2019m not part of the Democrat Party. I\u2019m not. I\u2019m not. I\u2019m not. But people who object to this policy, a lot of people are Democrats. I\u2019m not a Democrat.”<\/p>\n

“We have a great chance to inflict a political price on Trump and his party in November. We… I mean, the Democrat Party.” then Salena Zito was on with Don Lemon on CNN last night. You know what Salena…? Speaking of Salena Zito, she had a piece that ran Saturday in the New York Post<\/a>. She is running a project at Harvard. She\u2019s taking Harvard students to parts of the country they\u2019ve never been. Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia. Not just rural, but areas outside of major metro areas.<\/p>\n

She is introducing them and having them interact with people. They don\u2019t stay at hotels. They don\u2019t take airplanes. Everywhere they go is by train or maybe not even train. I think they drive or bus it. They stay at bed and breakfasts. They\u2019re eating at local restaurants, no chains. The objective that she has is for these people, these kids at Harvard to get to know America, an America they never see, an America that they\u2019re oftentimes taught is a bunch of hillbilly hayseeds.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>So she\u2019s taking them to bowling alleys and to mom-and-pop restaurants, other local businesses, and they are stunned when they are meeting these people that live in these small towns in Ohio and Pennsylvania because, really, they\u2019re not exposed to this. They\u2019re not from these areas. They\u2019ve never been there, and if you\u2019re not from these areas… It\u2019s not that it\u2019s unique to Harvard students. A lot of people, if they\u2019re not from these areas don\u2019t go there. It\u2019s just that many, many people are from places that are outside of cities.<\/p>\n

And they are urban, suburban, and even rural. But it\u2019s a fascinating thing. Now, the kids don\u2019t get any credit for this. There\u2019s no course credit. There\u2019s no test or exam. But it is a fascinating idea and project, and she thinks that it is overwhelmingly successful in exposing elite students to… These are the people I often claim make the country work. These are the ones that are not seeking fame, not doing what they do to get noticed. They\u2019re living their lives, trying to do the best they can.<\/p>\n

Many of them are tied familial-wise to their areas. They\u2019ll never leave because of family traditions and family tries. They love where they live. They know everybody in town. It\u2019s a worthwhile exercise. But stop and think that something else needs to be done because of any number of factors — media, education, how people from these areas are largely said to be responsible for electing Trump. So they\u2019re what? They\u2019re idiots. They\u2019re small-minded, small thinking, no experience idiots.<\/p>\n

And she\u2019s trying to show Harvard students that\u2019s not the case. So she\u2019s on with Don Lemon last night, and they\u2019re talking about the immigration issue and Trump voters and Trump\u2019s executive order. So Don Lemon says, “You said during the election, ‘The press takes Trump literally but not seriously.'” I think he means Trump\u2019s… Yeah, that is. “‘The press takes Trump literally but not seriously.\u2019 Does that still hold true, and do you think his actions matched his words on this one?”<\/p>\n

ZITO: Here\u2019s our problem, Don. Everything is at, like, the 11th decibel and the switch is sort of broken off. So every issue is all the way up there, the small ones and the really, really important ones. Because everything is at that level, I think everyone, everything has the same level of importance. Either that or people are tuning out.<\/p>\n

LEMON: The sky is falling! The sky is falling! That\u2019s sort of —<\/p>\n

ZITO: Yeah, and I\u2019m worried about that. We need to be able to step back and look at things individually because everything\u2019s so heightened. I\u2019m concerned that we\u2019re losing that ability to —<\/p>\n

LEMON: But there\u2019s a — maybe there\u2019s a lesson for our Democrats and maybe even for… The media\u2019s not Democrats, but maybe —<\/p>\n

ZITO: I think it\u2019s for all of us.<\/p>\n
