<\/p>\nRUSH: Now, as you people are aware, I have steadfastly — not refused — I\u2019ve just decided not to talk about Comey at all this week, other than some predictions that I made on Monday. And this has been purposeful. I purposely have not talked about Comey for two reasons, actually three. I don\u2019t care. Number two, I made some predictions, and I wanted to see how quickly they would come true. Not “if” they would come true, because I knew that my predictions were correct. And the third reason was, everybody else is and we don\u2019t do what everybody else is doing or does on this program.<\/p>\n
However, today we are going to be delving into the Comey phenomena, which is exactly the opposite kind of phenomena Comey was expecting to happen. James Comey has not been embraced by the American people.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The American people do not care about James Comey in the way James Comey thinks they did or could be made to care or would someday care. James Comey had not established the kind of bond with the American people that would allow him to become the conscience of a country, which is what he thinks he is. You have to earn this connection.<\/p>\n
And I first referenced this — we\u2019re gonna go back to the Grooveyard of Forgotten Sound Bites where I made all these predictions. I first referenced this on Monday. I came in here and saw Comey answering bio questions, where he grew up, how he killed ants with a magnifying glass, things we all did. And life lessons that he learned from the fourth grade squash coach. I said, “This is not what people care about with Comey.”<\/p>\n
They don\u2019t care who he is, where he came from, how he became what he is. The only thing they care about is there\u2019s something in his book that is gonna take out a president, and if there isn\u2019t, then it\u2019s bye-bye James and hello Comeytose.<\/p>\n
And that is what is happening. And I didn\u2019t think it would take very long. Remember how I blew a gasket in here reviewing Comey\u2019s appearance with Stephanopoulos where Stephanopoulos asks him, “Did you tell Trump that the Steele dossier was actually bought and paid for opposition research by Hillary Clinton?”<\/p>\n
(paraphrasing) “No, no, no. In fact, I don\u2019t even think I called it the Steele dossier.” I mean, absolutely no sensitivity or even awareness of the pitiful that question posed. And he fell right into the hole that Stephanopoulos — and I don\u2019t even know if Stephanopoulos was digging a hole, frankly. But, for crying out loud, you\u2019ve got this — I don\u2019t want to go through this again, but I was incredulous that the entire reason for all of this he knew was political opposition research and did not tell Trump about it? Which is proof on its face that all of this has been about entrapping Trump.<\/p>\n
And then the second really unbelievable admission that undercuts all of this Saint Comey image creation is the idea that he let polls and polling data determine whether or not or how he was going to conduct his duties as FBI director. He had a golden opportunity to say, “No, polling data, what the American people think is good or bad, right or wrong, that\u2019s not how we in the FBI do it. We in the FBI pay no attention to elections, we pay no attention to polls, we get our man, or girl.”<\/p>\n

But no. Comey\u2019s admitting, “Yeah, I did what I did with Hillary when, \u2019cause I thought she was gonna win and I thought she\u2019d be able to withstand it and I thought it was the best time.” And then he announces that she\u2019s not prosecutable without talking to a prosecutor? You know, at this time Loretta Lynch had basically told him, “Look, this operation is yours, bud. I got caught with Slick Willie on the tarmac in Phoenix, so you\u2019re gonna have to handle this.”<\/p>\n
So Comey went out there, did the July 5th press conference, and told everybody, without talking to a prosecutor — it\u2019s not Comey\u2019s decision who gets charged and who gets tried and who doesn\u2019t, but there he is making it. So I just wanted to see, I wanted to see how long it would take for the negative, shall we say, or questionable opinions of Comey to surface. And they did.<\/p>\n
By the way, another thing reminiscent eerily of Hillary Clinton. His big, august premier book signing was at a top drawer bookstore in Washington. Nobody showed up. The vast majority of people who showed up were journalists, people that had their laptops and their cameras and their microphones and stuff, but nobody showed up. Nobody. I mean, you could count \u2019em on one hand the numbers of the general public who showed up. Stunning, in Washington.<\/p>\n
But stop and think; how many average citizens are there in Washington that are going to a bookstore? The point is everybody in Washington works somehow, some way either in the government or someplace that\u2019s tangential to it. And so Comey\u2019s no big deal. Just another government employee that has a book. But nobody showed up. So we\u2019re gonna get into it in due course.<\/p>\n
Also, Frank Luntz took his focus group operation to ABC News Nightline. And, boy, does Comey get raked over the coals there. Oh, it is huge. I predicted this was gonna backfire. I\u2019m gonna play all my predictions for you so that you will.<\/p>\n
BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n
RUSH: I finally now have arrived at the beginning of the long-promised Comey segment today.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve not been talking about it for the past couple days on purpose \u2019cause I wanted to wait to see if the predictions I made on Monday would come true, or at least we would begin to see signs that I was right. And we\u2019re already seeing the signs.\u00a0 And I want to start by reviewing the various observations and predictions that I made.\u00a0 So let\u2019s go back to last Friday in which I pontificate and predict the impact of his book<\/a> and that impact on his reputation.<\/p>\n RUSH ARCHIVE:\u00a0 He thinks he\u2019s the big guy. He thinks he\u2019s cool. He thinks that he is universally loved and believed \u2014 and this, to me, is a setup for a backfire. … I don\u2019t know how much damage it\u2019s gonna do to Trump, but it is gonna cause damage to Comey that I don\u2019t think he foresees.<\/p>\n RUSH:\u00a0 That was last Friday.\u00a0 That damage has already begun, and it is plainly viewable, plain to see at the Washington Post, at Vox.\u00a0 All of these liberal media outlets really believed that Comey had the smoking gun, that that was the purpose of the book, that Comey was finally gonna reveal things nobody knows.\u00a0 He was gonna let it all hang out here — and in the process, Comey\u2019s book was gonna nail Trump.\u00a0 And there\u2019s nothing new in Comey\u2019s book.<\/p>\n And these people on the left are depressed, deflated. They\u2019re let down, and now they\u2019re lashing out \u2019cause they don\u2019t like Comey\u2019s smug, better-than-everybody-else attitude.\u00a0 They don\u2019t like him gettin\u2019 down in the gutter where they think Trump is.\u00a0 They don\u2019t like anything about this.\u00a0 But what they really resent is that what they were led to believe that there\u2019s some kind of smoking gun in this book isn\u2019t there.\u00a0 It\u2019s like all the times there has been congressional testimony.<\/p>\n My next prediction also last Friday…<\/a><\/p>\n RUSH ARCHIVE:\u00a0 I can tell you, folks: After, quote-unquote, \u201cstudy\u201d today, this thing\u2026 I\u2019m already getting Comeytose. It\u2019s just\u2026 And you know, this is just the beginning. This guy\u2019s got a month of sales, book signings and tours and TV interviews. You\u2019re gonna be so sick of this guy, and he has miscalculated this like you can\u2019t believe.<\/p>\n RUSH:\u00a0 And it is a major miscalculation, and it is born… Do not doubt me on this. It is born of Comey — actually, it\u2019s almost McCainitis.\u00a0 Remember 2007, 2006? John McCain was the media darling.\u00a0 The media loved McCain, and he showed up wherever the media wanted, and he gave them what they wanted.\u00a0 When it was time to be critical of George W. Bush, there was McCain answering the call.<\/p>\n And everybody in the Drive-By Media loved McCain.\u00a0 And they were talking about McCain the way they have been talking about Comey.\u00a0 “Peak integrity! Eminently respectful! The last man in Washington upon whom we can depend. A decorated war hero, endured torture.”\u00a0 And McCain bought it all.\u00a0 McCain was running around talking about the media as his base.\u00a0 He cultivated it, he bought it all — and what was I saying at the time?\u00a0 “Senator, wait \u2019til you have a Democrat opponent, and then you\u2019re going to learn what they really think of you.”<\/p>\n And that is what happened. I see Comey going through the same stages, believing the media personally loves him, believing all of these people in the country are desperate for James Comey to be the savior of America from these dark times of Donald Trump. James Comey believes this is how he is seen.<\/p>\n James Comey believes the American people desperately hope and desperately want him to be what America has always been. And that\u2019s not how the American people see him. That\u2019s not what the American people want out of him. James Comey has not been a public figure interacting with the American people for any length of time whatsoever. He has not earned such lofty status. He hasn\u2019t had the opportunity to build such a bond or connection.<\/p>\n He\u2019s been removed. He\u2019s been in an ivory tower, FBI director, he\u2019s the associate FBI director, whatever he is. People have no personal investment in Comey, but he believes that they do. And he believes it because he\u2019s a creature of the media. He eats it up, he absorbs it, like McCain did. And he\u2019s buying it all. He\u2019s thinking that everybody loves him because the media does.<\/p>\n Comey\u2019s making the mistake of assuming that all of this investment in him and all of this interest and curiosity is in him personally. And it isn\u2019t. It\u2019s only because people have been led to believe that this guy\u2019s got the goods on Trump. And the people that want the goods on Trump hope Comey\u2019s got it, and if he doesn\u2019t, they don\u2019t care enough about Comey to say, “Okay, well, at least he\u2019s a good guy.” They\u2019re gonna wave him off. “Bye, Comey. You\u2019re of no use to us. We thought you had the silver bullet to get Trump. You got nothing. Plus, you\u2019re making yourself look bad. We don\u2019t care.”<\/p>\n And that\u2019s what\u2019s happening right now. The Trump supporters were never gonna be invested in Comey, which I think he probably knew. And I saw this. I got here on Monday. I\u2019m watching TV, part of show prep, and Comey\u2019s doing a new set of interviews after the Sunday night airing of his interview with Stephanopoulos. He\u2019s answering all these bio questions, like, “Yeah, I wanted to be a Superman prosecutor when I was seven,” or whatever the questions were.<\/p>\n They were questions nobody is yet interested in about James Comey. As far as the American people are concerned, Comey hasn\u2019t accomplished anything. He\u2019s the FBI director. He\u2019s got an interesting resume. But in terms of doing things that connect with the American people that create a bond, it just hasn\u2019t happened, but yet he\u2019s acting like it has. And it\u2019s all due to the fact, as I say, that he\u2019s misjudging and confusing the media to be representative of the American people. This is what I said on Tuesday at almost the beginning of the program<\/a>.<\/p>\n RUSH ARCHIVE: Comey doesn\u2019t have this kind of a bond with the American people. People are not interested in what made James Comey who he is. People don\u2019t know Comey well enough to care about how he turned out. People are not interested in James Comey in terms of what they can learn about living the good life or the right way. And yet I believe Comey thinks that he has achieved that.<\/p>\n I don\u2019t think anybody is really looking to James Comey to learn life lessons. … I\u2019m gonna tell you, that\u2019s not a good place to be, thinking that you\u2019re something you\u2019re not in the eyes of either an audience, or in this case the American people. … The worst mistake you can make as a public figure is to misunderstand how you are seen.<\/p>\n People are curious who the guy is, what he\u2019s gonna say, what his book\u2019s gonna do, what\u2019s gonna be the impact of it, but James Comey personally has not yet reached this special status that I think he believes he has achieved. And I think a lot of people make the mistake, because they end up buying or believing the fawning media that they get.<\/p>\n RUSH: Folks, as we guys say, and women it say as well, you can\u2019t force people to care about you. It\u2019s like trying to force a woman to care about you. She either does or doesn\u2019t, but you can\u2019t make it happen. And women, they say it a different way. They write books about it. They say, “He\u2019s just not into you. Get used to it.” Woody Allen said it in his own way. When asked what has success meant to him, “Simple. The only the difference is I\u2019m rejected by a higher class of woman.”<\/p>\n BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n RUSH: Here are Comey\u2019s exact words on Hillary Clinton and the October 28th temporary reopening of her case, in which, in my humble opinion, he just nukes his reputation. Ready? From the book: “It is entirely possible that because I was making decisions in an environment where Hillary Clinton was sure to be the next president, my concern about making her an illegitimate president by concealing the restarted investigation bore greater weight than it would have if the election appeared closer or if Donald Trump were ahead in the polls.”<\/p>\n Now, I don\u2019t know what the American people think of James Comey, but I do know that it isn\u2019t nearly as lofty as he thinks it is. But I can tell you what they do expect of an FBI director or the all-powerful people in law enforcement. And they expect that stuff not to matter. When you\u2019re pursuing crime or criminals, you don\u2019t decide whether to go after somebody because of what polling data on something says. You don\u2019t decide to exonerate somebody because you think they\u2019re gonna win anyway. Comey was expected to announce a silver bullet during a couple of appearances before congressional committees, and he didn\u2019t — and if he had smoking-gun evidence, that\u2019s where he would have revealed it, because he was under oath and being asked specifically about it and didn\u2019t.\u00a0 So nobody should have thought this book was gonna reveal anything.\u00a0 This book is about manufacturing the image of James Comey as American Superman, conscience of America, the last moral man in Washington.\u00a0 That\u2019s the purpose of this book, an attempt to establish that.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"https:\/\/www.rushlimbaugh.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/APP-041618-COMEY-ABC-1-psd.jpg\")
Comey\u2019s making the mistake of assuming the media actually is a reflection of the American people. They are not. And I think he\u2019s already in the beginnings of a mental attitude that is, “God. What the hell\u2019s happening to me? This isn\u2019t what was gonna happen. This isn\u2019t what was supposed to happen.” I guarantee you, folks. Being seduced by a wrong and misguided media is one of the most easy things to happen to people, and it\u2019s one of the most dangerous.<\/p>\n
