RUSH: Let\u2019s go to the audio sound bites, shall we? Let\u2019s start with number seven, Mike. Elizabeth Edwards\u2019s new campaign ad. She is discussing her cancer in this ad. It runs about 51 seconds.<\/p>\n

<\/a>MRS. EDWARDS: Sometimes we put things off, don\u2019t we? We think we have all the time in the world. But we don\u2019t. You say you\u2019re going to volunteer at the food bank, but maybe I\u2019ll do that next week, or my elderly neighbor could use some help, and I\u2019ll do that tomorrow. Sometimes we can\u2019t wait. The people who live in poverty in this country, they can\u2019t wait for us to step up. People who are struggling and voiceless, those without health care, they can\u2019t wait. John and I have decided not to wait, to step up to try to make the difference that we can. The question is, what are you going to do? Are you going to step up? The truth is we don\u2019t have all the time in the world.<\/p>\n

RUSH: All right, so she\u2019s reminding people that she has a terminal disease and telling us that we might have a terminal disease if her husband is not elected president. They can do what they want. I want to go back in time, March of this year when Edwards made the announcement about the return of his wife\u2019s cancer, here is how Newsweek\u2019s Howard Fineman analyzed it.<\/p>\n

FINEMAN: This is a metaphor for how they want to fight for the country. They\u2019re willing to take the public relations risk. I thought that was, looked at politically, diagnosed, if you will, politically, that was a ten-strike of a press conference. They showed guts, was nothing short of remarkable, and somewhat unexpected and it\u2019s always great when something unexpected happens around here.<\/p>\n

RUSH: What was expected, do you recall at that press conference? What was expected was the news had come out that her cancer had returned and they were speculating — there was a leak in fact, which turned out to be a false leak, that somebody planted and gave The Politico people. They thought it was legit and that Edwards might be announcing he was going to get out of the race. So that\u2019s what everybody thought was going to happen and instead they did this press conference, ‘We\u2019re going to fight on! We\u2019re not going to let this deter us. Elizabeth is going to go on the campaign trail. We\u2019re going to take the kids out there.\u2019 That\u2019s what Howard Fineman was saying was a ten-strike politically of a press conference. On their website they put a thing for donations. It was obviously to jump-start the campaign. I even said so. I took flak at the time for analyzing it politically, but Fineman also did. Of course, he didn\u2019t get any flak for analyzing it politically. But I did. <\/p>\n

Speaking of Senator Edwards, he said yesterday he\u2019s going to ‘accept public financing for the Democratic primaries, reversing his previous plans to raise and spend money without being subject to the public system\u2019s spending limits. Mr. Edwards and his advisers said the decision was made not because of any shortage of money for his campaign, but because he wanted to draw a distinction with his main rivals for the nomination, especially Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, on the issue of the influence of money on politics. … At a campaign stop on Thursday in Conway, N.H., Mr. Edwards said it was the huge amounts being raised by the campaigns that had changed his mind. ‘Washington is awash with money, and the system is corrupt,\u2019 he said. … Joe Trippi, an Edwards campaign adviser, said Mr. Edwards hoped to underscore a contrast with Mrs. Clinton, who recently gave back $850,000 received through a fund-raiser, Norman Hsu, who turned out to be a fugitive from the law. ‘In headline after headline, this has been a race without any ideas,\u2019 Mr. Trippi said. ‘It has been about who has raised the most money or who has been in the most financial trouble. Is the Hsu scandal bigger than anyone else\u2019s scandal?”<\/p>\n

So it\u2019s not because he\u2019s short of money, no, no, he\u2019s just trying to show up Hillary and pointing at Hsu. Believe what you want in this, but the Washington Times is reporting that Mrs. Clinton\u2019s campaign has picked up a few key players from the George Soros-funded America Coming Together. Now, what\u2019s interesting about that is that the FEC just fined America Coming Together for misusing $70 million in the 2004 elections. ‘At least four persons who worked for the America Coming Together (ACT) fundraising group, which the Federal Election Commission recently fined $775,000, work directly for the Clinton campaign or hold top positions with consulting firms hired by it. In addition, the group\u2019s former president, longtime Clinton aide Harold Ickes, has been identified as a volunteer adviser to the Clinton campaign. In FEC filings, the campaign listed a debt to Mr. Ickes of more than $2,000 for travel-related costs.\u2019 It\u2019s just business as usual. Like I said, you just need to grab some yellow crime scene tape and put it around Clinton headquarters. We all know what\u2019s going on in there. The don\u2019t know Norman Hsu, couldn\u2019t find out who he was when all this was going on. This is just mind-boggling. And of course the Democrats just sit around and marvel. <\/p>\n

RUSH: John Edwards says Washington is awash with too much money, and the system is corrupt. Where have we heard that before? Senator McCain. That\u2019s why we need campaign finance reform, because money\u2019s out there corrupting everybody. Well, what does Edwards want to do? He wants even more money in Washington: your tax dollars, folks. He wants more money in Washington for him to play with, but too much money going to candidates corrupts the system.
