RUSH: Now, this story… Normally this would not even rate a mention, except that it matters to me. As you well know, I live in south Florida, and there are inane, ridiculous, freedom- and liberty-depriving restrictions on outdoor lighting here for eight months of the year starting in March 1st. You can\u2019t have any lights that aim toward the beach and the ocean because sea turtles (which don\u2019t start hatching until June or July) might see the light and go to the light rather than the ocean, which is their only chance for survival.<\/p>\n

So what they do is they have these inspectors. They go out there on the beach, and they grab these little $25 Instamatic cameras, and they lay down on the beach to try to get the turtle-eye view. Well, these little cameras are not sophisticated, and they open the lens as wide as it can go, and your house looks like floodlights are shining on it, and they come and they show you the picture and say, “You\u2019ve gotta turn these off. The turtles can see this and…”<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>“That\u2019s not what it looks like when you look at the house when you\u2019re out there on the beach! That\u2019s not what it looks like!”<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s what the picture shows,” they say.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s not what it looks like. The lights are not bright enough to be seen by anybody! The lights are not as bright as the moon.”<\/p>\n

“Don\u2019t care. The regulation says you gotta turn \u2019em off so turn \u2019em off.”<\/p>\n

And then the environmentalist wackos patrol the beach every night reporting on people they think are in violation of the ordinance. Eight months out of the year<\/a>! I happen to like landscape lighting. I happen to have taken a lot of time to get it right, and don\u2019t want to only be able to use it four months a year. It\u2019s just a classic example — and, by the way, I\u2019ll be happy… My lights can\u2019t even be seen from the beach anyway, but I\u2019d more than happy to even reduce those, starting in June when the turtles start hatching. But March 1st?<\/p>\n

“Well, that\u2019s right, Mr. Limbaugh, because that\u2019s when some of the turtles arrive to lay the eggs!”<\/p>\n

“Fine. They\u2019re not gonna hatch in March. What is this?”<\/p>\n

“Well, Mr. Limbaugh, we really take great pleasure in angering people like you and telling you what you can and can\u2019t do,” and that\u2019s the bottom line.<\/p>\n

Well, get this. “City of Asheville,” North Carolina — which is where a huge Vanderbilt mansion is. “City of Asheville Tells Restaurants to Unplug Patio Lights, Leaving Diners [Al Fresco] in the Dark<\/a> — In the early evening hours at Pack\u2019s Tavern, the patio is warmly lit and merry, with a few strings of bistro lights casting a glow on tables below. But the City of Asheville says those lights violate a citywide lighting ordinance, and they must go dark.<\/p>\n

“The intent of the ordinance, most recently updated in 2012 and drafted with input from the Astronomy Club of Asheville … is to lessen light pollution, mitigate safety hazards caused by glare, and eliminate” what they\u2019re calling “light trespassing.” You see, the light trespasses! You turn on these little, tiny bulbs that they string in the trees and the shrubs, and that light trespasses, and it upset the Astronomy Club of Asheville.<\/p>\n

\"\"And it upsets others who claim that all of this is nothing more than pollution, which is causing glare, which could blind people. There\u2019s not enough power in these lights to blind people! What\u2019s gonna endanger people here is darkness. The astronomy club board member said, “It\u2019s about far more than just protecting skies. It\u2019s creating lighting that\u2019s adequate for safety but not glaring.” Well, who are you, Bozo? What gives you the right to basically demand everybody else acquiesce to whatever your cockeyed view of things is?<\/p>\n

What gives you the right to come in and tell the city of Asheville they gotta turn off lights here, turn \u2019em off there because of some nebulous thing like “light trespassing”? Protecting the skies? How the hell is the sky hurt? What is the sky? How will you define the sky? What\u2019s the pain? What\u2019s the harm? But, you know, when these things happen, everybody in charge of enforcing them just acts like a robot.<\/p>\n

“Well, it\u2019s the law.”<\/p>\n

“I can\u2019t do anything about it.”<\/p>\n

“Well, it\u2019s the regulation.”<\/p>\n

“Well, it\u2019s the ordinance.”<\/p>\n

Everybody just… The number of sheep that just accept this stuff that just accept this ongoing, daily encroachment — a little liberty here, a little freedom there — and pretty soon they mount up to a whole bunch of liberties and freedoms lost. And this is for the most nebulous, cockeyed, crazy thing. Light trespassing? We\u2019re not talking about spotlights! We\u2019re not talking about searchlights and beam lines. We\u2019re talking about things that are no more powerful than Christmas tree lights causing glare, causing light pollution.<\/p>\n

These are lighting the landscaping that surrounds dining tables at this particular restaurant. One of the owners at Pack\u2019s Tavern says, “I don\u2019t want to say it\u2019s unenforceable, it\u2019s just unrealistic. When we\u2019re talking about the downtown area, well, you don\u2019t exactly go down there to see the night sky,” for crying out loud! Light trespassing — and something that does not harm the sky. So the penalty here is you have “to remove any string lighting on outdoor and enclosed patios by April 9 \u2014 or face fines of $100 a day.”<\/p>\n

Just accept this stuff.<\/p>\n

One of the owners of the business said, “I hope they\u2019ll [come to their senses and] be a little more realistic and recognize they\u2019re supposed to be supporting, not restricting, local business.” Hey, good luck with that. The Astronomy Club of Asheville has spoken — and since the Astronomy Club of Asheville has spoken, everybody must just stand down and bend over and do whatever they demand because they are… Who? Why doesn\u2019t somebody stand up and say, “The Astronomy Club of Asheville doesn\u2019t have any power to tell us what we can do!<\/p>\n

“The Astronomy Club of Asheville ought to go back to its clubhouse and look at light through its telescopes, if that\u2019s what it wants to do. But leave us alone.” Nobody does that but just cowers and bows down. “What about you, Mr. Limbaugh?” Believe me, I have tried. I have tried. But you run into gutless wonders wherever you go on this stuff. “Mr. Limbaugh, you\u2019d better knock it off. You know, you\u2019re really running the risk of making some of these people mad. You\u2019d better just back down. You know, they can target you.”<\/p>\n

Yeah, right! In the United States they can target me for not approving and not appreciating and not agreeing with what they\u2019re trying to do here. “They can target you, Mr. Limbaugh. You better be careful.” I\u2019m used to being targeted. This is all how it happens. I just wanted to share this with you because I knew… You know, once this stuff starts someplace, it\u2019s gonna spread. Once they figure out through whatever cockeyed logic they\u2019ve got that lights on is somehow bad, it\u2019s all part of the environmental movement.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s part of the environmental wackos. (impression) “Lights equal pollution. Lights at night are not normal. God didn\u2019t make \u2019em. They weren\u2019t there; so we\u2019ve made \u2019em! Humans invented it. That means it\u2019s bad for the environment,” and it\u2019s no doubt got linkage to climate change because of all of the electricity that\u2019s required to power these things. That\u2019s how it starts, that\u2019s how it builds — and when nobody opposes it, it just grows and grows and grows. Where it stops, who knows?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
