They\u2019re not focused on whatever was going on with his mouth — the drooling or the ChapStick or whatever — or the unfortunate optics of using a car as a backdrop, which brought back memories of Uncle Ted\u2019s Oldsmobile submerged at Chappaquiddick.<\/p>\n

Nah, here\u2019s what liberal critics zeroed in on: Kennedy\u2019s bilingual stunt. A host at NPR said speaking to DREAMers in Espanol assumed they don\u2019t speak Anglais. He called that a \u201cpatronizing falsehood,\u201d since they\u2019ve been here since they were kids.<\/p>\n
Others called it \u201cexclusionary\u201d in addition to being \u201ccondescending and ignorant.\u201d Not all DREAMers are from Spanish-language countries, you know, so by speaking Spanish, Kennedy \u201cerased\u201d those from Africa or Asia.<\/p>\n
And besides, said the critics, Kennedy\u2019s Spanish “no es bueno.” Others laughed at Kennedy\u2019s claim that Democrats will fight for them because Democrats threw DREAMers under the bus by caving during the government shutdown.<\/p>\n
