Every American male has learned (like in the last ten years) that when a woman says \u201cno,\u201d she means \u201cno.\u201d It doesn\u2019t mean “maybe,” it means “no.” Right?<\/p>\n
Well pay attention, folks. On Sunday, the \u201cNews Analysis\u201d section of the New York Times featured an article titled: \u201cWhen Saying \u2018Yes\u2019 Is Easier Than Saying \u2018No\u2019.\u201d It\u2019s by Jessica Bennett, \u201cthe gender editor of the New York Times.\u201d That is her actual title.<\/p>\n
Now she and her female friends have spoken \u201cwith knowing nods\u201d about the \u201cnuances\u201d of sexual interactions. Sometimes, they say, there\u2019s a \u201cplace of no return,\u201d where having sex is easier than bailing out.<\/p>\n

She says that there are names for this like \u201cgray-zone sex,\u201d or \u201cbegrudging consensual sex” or \u201clukewarm sex\u201d — sex \u201cyou\u2019re kind of \u2018meh\u2019 about.\u201d Meaning: bored or apathetic. And there\u2019s \u201cbad\u201d sex because of how you feel afterwards.<\/p>\n
But there\u2019s one passage I want to quote verbatim. She writes: \u201cConsent isn\u2019t always black and white. Sometimes \u2018no\u2019 means \u2018yes,\u2019 because you actually do want to do it, but you know you\u2019re not supposed to, lest you be labeled a slut. And if you\u2019re a man, that \u2018no\u2019 often means \u2018just try harder,\u2019 because, you know, persuasion is part of the game.\u201d<\/p>\n
This woman doesn\u2019t know it, but she\u2019s a throwback, because she\u2019s exactly right. In the old days “no,” more often than not, did mean yes.
