RUSH: I want to grab a call here. Mr. Snerdley… You know, I got up and I ran about a quarter of a mile during the break, and I came back in to get ready to do the program. Snerdley said, “Check the caller on Line 1.” So I came in and I didn\u2019t know what it could be. Was it the president calling from Vietnam? Was it Vladimir Putin calling? Was it Roy Moore calling to deny it? I had no idea what it was. (interruption) Well, that\u2019s what was going through my head.<\/p>\n

\"\"(interrupting) You never tell me to look who\u2019s on Line 1. Could it have been Roy Moore? Could it have been McCain telling me I should quit, too? What? I don\u2019t know. It could be the Russians offering me companionship. I don\u2019t know what it could have been. (interrupting) So I get in here, and I see up there it\u2019s Andrew from Sacramento, California, and he\u2019s got a story to tell from when I worked out there in 1985. So we say, “Hi, Andrew, how are you? Welcome to the program.”<\/p>\n

CALLER: How you doing, Rush? It\u2019s a pleasure speaking with you.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I\u2019m doing great.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (chuckling) I was telling Bo, I don\u2019t know if you remember this or not. It was back in \u201984 or \u201985. I\u2019m an old asphalt paver, retired asphalt paver, and I worked for the striping crew for parking lots, and the whole week our company had been working at KFBK studios.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Wait a minute. You\u2019re retired now or you were retired then?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, no, no. I\u2019m retired now.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You\u2019re a retired striper now. Okay.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes, for an asphalt paving company where I worked for years.<\/p>\n

RUSH: All right.<\/p>\n

CALLER: And the whole week the company had been working, the paving crew had been working at KFBK studios over by Arden Fair Mall.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah, yeah. I know exactly where it is. Absolutely. I\u2019ll never forget any of that.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Absolutely.<\/p>\n

\"\"CALLER: Just south of Rio Linda. (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: (laughing) It\u2019s not that close! Don\u2019t give the wrong idea.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: I mean, you still need meal money to get to Rio Linda if you decide to drive there.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Exactly.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Right.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Anyway, I\u2019m there on a Saturday \u2019cause they want to get the cars out of there and there was light traffic in there on Saturdays.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Right.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019m like, “You dirty dog. You send me up here on Saturday \u2019cause I know I\u2019m not gonna see this Rush Limbaugh guy,” and you come pulling up and you couldn\u2019t get in because we had the parking lot closed. So you came walking in. You were with somebody. I don\u2019t know who you were with. So I\u2019ve got my striping machine, and you stopped, and you were looking at it, and you wanted to know how it worked, and you asked if you could make a stripe on the asphalt. I said, “Sure! Go ahead.” (laughing) You were all excited about it — and it turned out to be a banana, and I didn\u2019t care.<\/p>\n

RUSH: (laughing) A banana! (laughing)<\/p>\n

CALLER: I said, “You can get a job here any time, Rush.”<\/p>\n

RUSH: Ha! Were you able to correct the mistake?<\/p>\n

\"\"CALLER: Oh, I blacked it out after you left. But it was just… I came home and I told my wife — we had just gotten married, me and my wife. I said, “You\u2019re not gonna believe what happened today (laughing), who I met today.”<\/p>\n

RUSH: I\u2019m trying to remember why I would have been going in on a Saturday. Did it happen to be…? Well, no, it couldn\u2019t have been because you said there was no traffic there.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, there was slight traffic. Yeah, the stripers usually worked on Saturdays because that\u2019s when the parking lots are empty.<\/p>\n

RUSH: What time of year was it? Do you remember?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, gosh. It was a couple months before St. Patrick\u2019s Day because then I saw you at Shanley\u2019s on St. Patrick\u2019s Day. Do you remember Shanley\u2019s Bar & Grill? (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Of course I do!<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: I was the grand marshal of the St. Patrick\u2019s Day that year and I had to host the luncheon.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Right!<\/p>\n

RUSH: Absolutely. You were stalking me there? Oh, no. You were striping the parking lot at Shanley\u2019s right? (laughing)<\/p>\n

CALLER: At Bill Shanley\u2019s, yes! He and my father were good friends. (laughing) I couldn\u2019t believe it! I said, “I ran into this guy twice in the past couple of months.”<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah. There were death threats. I had to wear body armor walking that route that year.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.<\/p>\n

\"\"RUSH: The death threats were not serious, but everybody said — and we didn\u2019t announce it. I\u2019m making this public for the first time. But they said, “You know, we\u2019d feel a lot better if you\u2019d put a vest on.” I said, “It\u2019s gonna be hot as hell.” “Believe me, it\u2019s well worth it if something happens.”<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing) It was about 120 degrees there.<\/p>\n

RUSH: That\u2019s a different day. The Shanley\u2019s lunch is on Friday before the big shindig or whatever it was.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah, we would always go.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Man, oh, man, you\u2019re bringing back some memories \u2019cause Sacramento\u2019s my adopted hometown.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I know exactly the KFBK location right down the street from those three spaceship movie theaters.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Flying saucer movie theaters.<\/p>\n

CALLER: They\u2019re gone now. The domes. (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, you know, I talked to a friend of mine who was in Sacramento for the first time in a long time, and I haven\u2019t… I need to get back. I haven\u2019t been in way too long. But a friend of mine said he was there not long ago and it\u2019s amazingly gentrified and different. I said, “It must be the work of the new mayor.” Well, not the “new” mayor, Kevin Johnson. He did a bang-up job. Well, look, Andrew, I\u2019m glad you called. I\u2019m glad you got through. What reminded you of that? I mean, of all days to call and talk about me grabbing your striper machine in the parking lot of KFBK, what prompted you to call today?<\/p>\n

CALLER: I just was thinking about it last night, and I was watching TV, and I was just kind of missing what I used to do, and I said, “I\u2019ll call Rush.”<\/p>\n

RUSH: So, let me ask you: When you\u2019re driving the highway and you see the dotted-line stripes —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Uh-huh? Yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: — do you think, “That looks good. Those guys did that well,” or, “They did it poorly”?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, nowadays…<\/p>\n

RUSH: Since you used to do that, I mean, do you judge other stripers\u2019 work as you watch it, look at it?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Nowadays, Rush, you could be blind and do it. It\u2019s all done by laser.<\/p>\n

RUSH: (laughing)<\/p>\n

CALLER: You know, back in my day you had to watch it.<\/p>\n

RUSH: All you stripers out there at Caltrans, you could be blind and do it.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing) Well, just the machinery, the technology is so much better.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah. Just a way of saying you had talent back then and the guys doing it today don\u2019t need any.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah, we did. Yeah, we did. Yeah, we did. And you had to have a good eye.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Because if I… Yeah, I don\u2019t remember. You know, I really don\u2019t remember making a banana but I\u2019m not gonna sit here and deny it.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, I told you it was good. I remember saying, “Rush, look at that. That is the best-looking stripe in this lot.” It was something like a two-hour job and I made that thing drag out. “I\u2019m gonna stay here. It\u2019s a Saturday; there\u2019s no way this guy\u2019s showing up. No way.” (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, there had to be a reason. The only time… You know, we all had to work on a Saturday after they had a major, major flood, and it would have been about that time. It was earlier in the year than March and St. Patrick\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I never took anybody in there to show off \u2019cause I got over that when I was a teenager, showing off a radio station.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah.<\/p>\n

RUSH: So there must have been a legitimate business reason to go in there. I know it wasn\u2019t a sexual harassment suit so it\u2019s not that.<\/p>\n

CALLER: You were intrigued.<\/p>\n

RUSH: What was that?<\/p>\n

CALLER: You were really intrigued with how the machine worked, the whole nine yards.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, I\u2019m fascinated with everything people do.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, yes.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I\u2019ve always been curious about what people do and why and what they try to do to be the best at it, if they do.<\/p>\n

CALLER: That\u2019s what makes you the hero you are.<\/p>\n

RUSH: I\u2019ve never seen… I\u2019ve seen that done, but I\u2019ve never done it myself. So you graciously let me have your machine. I mean, anything could have happened.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing) It was good. It was good.<\/p>\n

RUSH: (laughing)<\/p>\n

CALLER: I had a smile on my face for a month.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Okay, well, look, before you go, Andrew, this is prize day on the EIB Network.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, wow! (chuckles)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, I\u2019ve got some iPhone Xs — which nobody can get, but I have some. If you don\u2019t want the X, I got some 8s or 8 Pluses.<\/p>\n

CALLER: You are so generous.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You tell me. Which one would you like?<\/p>\n

CALLER: You\u2019re kidding.<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, I\u2019m not kidding.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019m still working on the 4S.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Oh, for crying out loud!<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing)<\/p>\n

\"\"RUSH: Then you\u2019ve gotta go X.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: You\u2019ve gotta go X.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I\u2019ve gotta kick-start this thing every morning. (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: I believe it. (laughing) All right.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: Look, who\u2019s your carrier? Who\u2019s your cell phone carrier?<\/p>\n

CALLER: AT&T.<\/p>\n

RUSH: AT&T. Okay. I\u2019m gonna send you a phone that will work on AT&T. You\u2019ll have to swap… No. You know what? You can\u2019t. That 4S is such an antique.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, no. I\u2019m serious. You\u2019re gonna have to take the 4S and the new phone to AT&T to have your number moved over to it.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, really? Okay.<\/p>\n

RUSH: And that\u2019s the safest way to do it anyway. You tell \u2019em the phone was a gift. You tell \u2019em it was gift. You don\u2019t have to mention my name. Just tell \u2019em. Take your old phone and tell \u2019em it was a gift and you want your number moved.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Oh, gosh, Rush.<\/p>\n

RUSH: They\u2019ll love to see you. They\u2019ll be happy to do it.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Gosh, Rush, I appreciate this.<\/p>\n

RUSH: You\u2019re more than welcome. It\u2019s the least I could do for somebody who let me take over their striper machine one day.<\/p>\n

CALLER: You were a striper for a day! (laughing)<\/p>\n

RUSH: For a minute! But I can put it on the resume. I can say I\u2019ve done it.<\/p>\n

CALLER: (laughing) Yes!<\/p>\n

RUSH: Okay, Andrew, hang on. Mr. Snerdley will be back to get an address from you.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yes, sir.<\/p>\n

RUSH: We\u2019ll have it out to you next week, okay? So be patient. By the way, do you have color preference? They come in silver and space gray. They\u2019re both black on the front. Does it matter?<\/p>\n

CALLER: Gray is fine.<\/p>\n

RUSH: All right, fine. That\u2019s what it is. AT&T and space gray.<\/p>\n
