RUSH: John in St. Louis. John, it\u2019s nice to have you on the EIB Network.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah, hey, it\u2019s great to be here. Thanks for having me on. I was just hearing you talk about consensus and science —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yes.<\/p>\n

CALLER: — and it kind of gets my head all screwy when you say that, because I don\u2019t understand why you have a problem with consensus in general.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Because science is not up to a vote.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Okay, that\u2019s fine. It\u2019s fine. Just because you arrive at consensus doesn\u2019t mean there\u2019s a vote.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Yeah.<\/p>\n

CALLER: There\u2019s just general agreement.<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, there\u2019s — <\/p>\n

RUSH: No, no, no, no. Science doesn\u2019t — there\u2019s nothing general about science. This is the point. This is not my phrase, by the way, this comes from other scientists, Michael Crichton<\/a>. I\u2019ve talked to the global warming scientists. This is not my creation. They told me this, and I thought, ‘That makes sense.\u2019<\/p>\n

CALLER: Well, sure, and it sounds like — it sounds like it makes sense. I mean just talk about consensus. It\u2019s a —<\/p>\n

RUSH: Are you a scientist?<\/p>\n

CALLER: — simple word, it means agreement, general agreement, right?<\/p>\n

RUSH: Are you a scientist?<\/p>\n

CALLER: No, but I understand — I have a dictionary, and I can look up the word ‘consensus,\u2019 and it just says ‘general agreement.\u2019<\/p>\n

RUSH: Okay, let\u2019s say that we came to a ‘general agreement\u2019 —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Okay.<\/p>\n

RUSH: — that the earth is flat, and let\u2019s say a majority of the scientific community —<\/p>\n

CALLER: Right. It doesn\u2019t make it true. Consensus doesn\u2019t make it true. I\u2019ll give you that, I\u2019ll stipulate — <\/p>\n

RUSH: Well, then what are we talking about? <\/p>\n

CALLER: — that, yes, if the science community reaches consensus, it\u2019s wrong, absolutely, could totally be wrong. You\u2019re right. But it\u2019s a judgment that\u2019s arrived at by most of those concerned.<\/p>\n

RUSH: Once it\u2019s ‘science\u2019 it\u2019s not wrong, this is the point —<\/p>\n

CALLER: (raising voice) Science can be wrong, why not? How can you say that! Science is wrong. It\u2019s part of the method of science —<\/p>\n

RUSH: The scientific method–<\/p>\n

CALLER: (talking over host) — come up with the theory or hypothesis, you test it, if the test is wrong, it\u2019s wrong, right? <\/p>\n

RUSH: Yes, but it\u2019s not called ‘science\u2019 during the whole testing process! It\u2019s not called science during the consensus process.<\/p>\n

CALLER: Sure it is.<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, it\u2019s not. No, it is not. It is not called established science. There is the scientific method.<\/p>\n

CALLER: I see what you\u2019re saying. So when the conclusion isn\u2019t met —<\/p>\n

RUSH: What you\u2019re telling me is —<\/p>\n

CALLER: (raising voice) and if it\u2019s gone through the scientific process and it\u2019s proved, which is — some people say nothing can be proved in science, that\u2019s okay — then it goes under the title of science.<\/p>\n

RUSH: No, don\u2019t say this ‘some stuff.\u2019 There are lots of things in science that can be proved that are accepted, like where the moon is and gravity — <\/p>\n

CALLER: Yeah, absolutely.<\/p>\n

RUSH: — and that the planet\u2019s round; the space shuttle\u2019s seen it! <\/p>\n

CALLER: Right. <\/p>\n

RUSH: What you\u2019re telling me is that you are willing, if you want to argue global warming on this basis, science, and this basis, you\u2019re telling me that you need redefine some words in order to have a case. There is no ‘consensus\u2019 in established science! It simply is not definitionally possible. I appreciate the call.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
