What\u2019s his future in your cabinet? Do you have confidence in him, and more importantly, how effective can he be in Congress going forward when he\u2019s lost a lot of confidence among Democrats and doesn\u2019t have many defenders among Republicans?\u2019<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/live-rush-limbaugh.pantheonsite.io\/wp-content\/uploads\/01125105.Par.0002.ImageFile.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"196\" class=\"alignright\"\/>THE PRESIDENT: I do have confidence in Attorney General Al Gonzales, and we talked about his need to go up to Capitol Hill and make it very clear to members in both political parties why the justice department made the decisions it made; make it very clear about the facts &#8212; and he\u2019s right, mistakes were made, and I\u2019m, frankly, not happy about it, because there is a lot of confusion over what really has been a customary practice by the presidents. US attorneys and others serve at the pleasure of the president. Past administrations have removed US attorneys. It\u2019s their right to do so. The justice department recommended a list of US attorneys. I believe the reasons why were entirely appropriate. And yet, this issue was mishandled to the point now where you\u2019re asking me questions about it in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>RUSH: Well, the president sounds mad, but he sounds mad at his own people. He sounds as mad at his own people as the Democrats are at his own people. So &#8216;mistakes were made. Frankly, I\u2019m not happy about them. Any time anybody goes up to Capitol Hill they gotta make sure they fully understand the facts and how they characterize the issue to members of Congress &#8212; and the fact that both Republicans and Democrats feel like that there was not straightforward communication troubles me. It troubles the attorney general, so he took action. He needs to continue to take action.\u2019 Gosh, this is hard. If that\u2019s his view about this, then there\u2019s really no need for me or any other talk show host to support his people. If he\u2019s not going to support his people&#8230; I mean, is this not something against Gonzales when he says, &#8216;You\u2019re going to go up to Capitol Hill, you gotta make sure you fully understand the facts and how they characterize the issue to members of Congress\u2019? <\/p>\n<p>Who\u2019s he upset about here? (interruption) Oh, he\u2019s dumping on the chief of staff? Gonzales\u2019 chief of staff, that\u2019s who it is you think he\u2019s dumping on? Oh, this guy, he\u2019s saying that the chief of staff to Gonzales didn\u2019t go up and give Congress all the facts about this. Oh, okay. Yeah. The president\u2019s on both sides of this. He\u2019s trying to give both sides a little of what they want. He did defend his actions. &#8216;Hey, it\u2019s no big deal. This happens all the time. They serve at the pleasure of the president. Past administrations have removed US attorneys. It\u2019s their right to do so,\u2019 so forth and so on.
