RUSH: TIME Magazine caved. They have destroyed the whole franchise of Person of the Year — and I think it was a joke for the longest time anyway. Their Person of the Year is everybody <\/emphasize>because of the new ability of everybody to contribute to media, average Americans (bloggers, the YouTube people, the MySpace people) we are having the ability to you no create our own media within our own universes, and so everybody is Person of the Year<\/a>. I\u2019ll tell you what it is: the people at TIME Magazine are scared to death! The last place I would want to be working today, if I were a journalist, is in a news weekly magazine. TIME, Newsweek and US News are last place I would want to be. They are slowly evolving to irrelevance. Even though they publish once a week, they can\u2019t possibly break news. <\/line><\/a>They can do interviews with people who say things they haven\u2019t said anywhere else, but they can\u2019t break news anymore. It\u2019s tougher and tougher to get genuine exclusives because by the time they go to press, what they\u2019re going to write about, subject-wise, everybody\u2019s already known. This Person of the Year thing, though, is a great illustration of how they just copped out. Now, they\u2019re saying: Well, we named a computer in 1982, and we named the planet in 1988 <\/emphasize>or whatever. Yeah, but this is everybody. They have named everybody, <\/emphasize>you, I, on everybody is the Person of the Year. They could have gotten serious about it, but they just, for some reason, couldn\u2019t. <\/line>And they farmed out the decision-making process! They had consulting groups made up of various kinds of people. It\u2019s almost like TIME Magazine was acting like Congress. Got a tough decision to make? Farm it out! Get some “blue-ribbon panel” in here of people that don\u2019t know what they\u2019re doing to make suggestions and then go with that rather than make the decision yourself. It\u2019s not that I care about the Person of the Year that much, but I\u2019m a marketing guy. They have destroyed and made a joke out of what once was a very, very high honor: to be named Person of the Year. It\u2019s something people sought out. They just rendered it a meaningless joke. We\u2019re all winners! This is typical: We\u2019re all equal. They didn\u2019t have the ability to pick one person because that would signal everybody else out is a bunch of losers, or as un-worthies or what have you. <\/line>BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/line>RUSH: You know, folks, when you believe in nothing, you\u2019ll believe anything — and that\u2019s the best way to sum up this TIME Magazine business. When you believe in nothing, you\u2019ll believe anything. Here is Mike in Binghamton, New York. Welcome to the program, sir. Nice to have you.<\/line><\/p>\n

CALLER: Rush, it\u2019s an honor and a pleasure. Mega dittos from a disillusioned college student in Binghamton, New York.<\/line>RUSH: Thank you, sir.<\/line>CALLER: I\u2019m just calling to ask you if I\u2019m allowed to use the TIME Magazine Person of the Year as a r?sum? builder.<\/line>RUSH: I would. I think everybody should do things like this. I mean, you\u2019ve been named the TIME Magazine Person of the Year! In fact, I\u2019d put out a press release, maybe write a college paper how honored you are, when you saw the cover, you saw yourself on it, and you didn\u2019t know that this was coming. It\u2019s something you\u2019ve aspired to your whole life; you had no clue, and now it\u2019s finally happened, and wow! I\u2019d go to town with it if it would make you feel good and be funny and parody this whole thing, because it\u2019s an absolute joke.<\/line>CALLER: Yeah, it just goes in with the whole feeling in the education field that everybody is a winner and nobody can be a loser.<\/line><\/a>RUSH: Yeah, it\u2019s populism. There are a lot of liberal roots in this thing, but look at what they could have done. They could have believed in the war effort and named George W. Bush. I\u2019m not joking. These are the choices they had. They could have believed in something. They chose to believe in nothing, and when you believe in nothing, you believe in anything. That is a profundity, folks — and write it down and never forget it. When you believe in nothing, you will believe anything.<\/emphasize> In fact, it is a great way to describe moderates. Now, look at what they could have believed in. The very liberal TIME Magazine could have believed in the war effort, if they wanted to, they could have. Forget politics for a moment. <\/line>Human beings, they could have believed in the war effort, and they could have recognized, having believed in the war effort, that basically one man has had the backbone to stand up and realize the threat faced from the enemy around the world and tried to do something about it and given the award to George W. Bush. They could have believed in the threat the world faces and given the award to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. They\u2019ve done that in the past. This is Person of the Year, not popular <\/emphasize>Person of the Year. They could have believed in losing the war, as they do. They could have believed in the whole anti-war rhetoric and named John Murtha as the person of the year. I\u2019m just giving you some possibilities. These are not suggestions, but these are things they copped out on. <\/line>They could have believed in the Bush-Haters. They could have believed that after all these years, the Bush-Haters succeeded and they could have named George Soros. They could have named Nancy Pelosi. (They probably thought that would be too easy.) They could have believed in the effectiveness of the UN, and they could have made it Kofi Annan. Now, I know intellectually they couldn\u2019t pull it off, but these are the choices that they had. They could have picked anybody, but what did they do? With a whole lot of fanfare and little belief, they named their Person of the Year all of us, which waters it down because, frankly, not all of us deserve being Person of the Year. Most people in this country don\u2019t deserve being Person of the Year because most people in the country do not have any public persona, although I do believe the people who really make the country work are those of you out there who don\u2019t care for fame, don\u2019t have any, and are living your lives to the best of your ability for the sake of raising your families and so forth, doing jobs that sometimes others won\u2019t do, and basically playing by the rules. I think that\u2019s why the country works, not because of any of these high-falluting elites.<\/line>Nevertheless, this is just a straight, flat out cop-out. <\/line><\/p>\n
