Welcome to the EIB Network.<\/line>CALLER: Mega dittos, Rush.<\/line>RUSH: Thank you.<\/line>CALLER: Calling from Montgomery County, PA.<\/line>RUSH: Thank you, sir.<\/line>CALLER: Great to talk to you. I was wondering what your comments are on the article in the New York Times where the deputy secretary general criticized the US, and your name was brought up, you and Fox News.<\/line>RUSH: You know, I don\u2019t want to disappoint anybody, but I barely noticed it. Now everybody is calling; we\u2019ve got your call about it; we\u2019ve got another call about it; Cookie has given me some audio about it. Look, I\u2019m telling you, my life is being criticized by liberals. I mean, it stopped being newsworthy to me. It ceased being noteworthy. Here\u2019s the story that Tom is referring to. It\u2019s yesterday — well, actually it was said yesterday by Mark Malloch Brown. The New York Times writes about it today. Says, “The prevailing practice of seeking to use the United Nations almost by stealth as a diplomatic tool while failing to stand up for it against its domestic critics is simply not sustainable.” This is Kofi Annan\u2019s chief deputy, Mark Malloch Brown. Said, “You will lose the U.N. one way or another… much of the public discourse that reaches the U.S. heartland has been largely abandoned to its loudest detractors such as Rush Limbaugh and Fox News.”<\/line> So Mark Malloch Brown is saying the reason that the United Nations is unrecognized for its greatness and its value, the reason that it\u2019s not recognized for its true benefit to world peace and blah, blah, blah, blah, is because of me and Fox News poisoning your minds. What\u2019s new? This is just another pointy-headed, elitest liberal say you\u2019re a bunch of mind numbed robots and you can\u2019t make up your own minds about things. The United Nations has not changed. It\u2019s still the bar scene in the first Star Wars movie. It\u2019s nothing but the vast majority of its members being tinhorn dictators and other, you know, little rug rats that are given legitimacy with their membership in the United Nations. It is an organization that seeks to fleece the American treasury. It\u2019s an organization that seeks to undermine US foreign policy, blames us for the problems of the world. And I couldn\u2019t care less what this pointy-headed intellectual elitist has to say because he\u2019s just another in a long line of liberals who can\u2019t win in the arena of ideas, so he\u2019s gotta go out and try to discredit the detractors. What\u2019s new about it?<\/line><\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/line>RUSH: Here\u2019s the actual statement of Kofi Annan\u2019s chief aide. He was making this speech yesterday. It was a luncheon speech at a midtown hotel in New York to a conference on global leadership, cosponsored by the Center for American Progress and the Century Foundation.<\/line>BROWN: Much of the public discourse that reaches the US heartland has been largely abandoned to its loudest detractors such as Rush Limbaugh and Fox News. That is what I meant by stealth diplomacy. The UN\u2019s role is, in effect, a secret in middle America, even as it is highlighted in the Middle East and other parts of the world.<\/line>RUSH: (interruption) No, I\u2019m not offended. I long ago ceased being offended, Mr. Snerdley. I just don\u2019t have the energy anymore. I told you, I do not let people offend me. He\u2019s exactly right. So what he\u2019s on the world stage? The guy is a pointy-headed elitist; they\u2019re all the same. I don\u2019t care if they\u2019re in Little Rock or if they\u2019re in New York on the world\u2019s stage. The UN, as I say, is nothing more than the bar scene in the first Star Wars, and now Mr. Malloch Brown is trying to engage in The Empire Strikes Back. And you know, we\u2019re just a little federation out here doing our best to keep people informed — What a corrupt organization, Kofi Annan, oil-for-food, hello! Iraq! Saddam Hussein. It\u2019s not like we\u2019re making this stuff up, ladies and gentlemen. And then you\u2019ve got the peacekeepers, so-called, the blue-helmeted guys over in Africa raping everybody they can find in their peacekeeping role. For crying out loud. Here\u2019s John Bolton. John Bolton reacted to this. He was on Fox this morning I think with David Asman, he was asked about this, and this was Bolton\u2019s reply.<\/line>BOLTON: And even worse was the condescending and patronizing tone about the American people, that fundamentally and very sadly, this was a criticism of the American people, not the American government, by an international civil servant.<\/line>RUSH: What\u2019s new? What is new? That\u2019s what I don\u2019t get about this. Folks, I\u2019m not trying to cavalier about this. My whole career here I\u2019ve had to deal with critics that say you\u2019re nothing but a bunch of mind-numbed robots, I\u2019m just a Svengali and you\u2019re idiots and if it weren\u2019t for me poisoning your minds, well, you would realize what a beautiful, lovely organization the UN is, how wonderful the Democratic Party is, how wonderful liberals are, how great abortion is, blah, blah — go on down the list. It\u2019s all my fault. To me, it\u2019s actually a badge of honor. I don\u2019t care whether it\u2019s a diplomat on the world stage, he\u2019s still a phony baloney, plastic banana, good-time rock ‘n\u2019 roller living in his little elite world, and when he goes out and attacks me, attacks Fox News, Bolton is right, it\u2019s actually an attack on the American people. <\/line><\/p>\n

Well, what\u2019s different about his attack on the American people and Ted Kennedy\u2019s daily attack or Harry Reid\u2019s or anybody else\u2019s? They routinely attack the American people for being stupid, for not seeing the light, not being enlightened enough. In fact, ladies and gentlemen, as I have told you, you can be a liberal without having contempt for average people. You have to have contempt, and you have to look down upon them with condescension, arrogant condescension. You wouldn\u2019t be a liberal otherwise. If people could take care of themselves, if they were smart enough to deal — well, then you wouldn\u2019t be needed. They can\u2019t have that. So I don\u2019t know. You know, Kofi Annan\u2019s term ends on December 31st, and so does Mark Malloch Brown\u2019s. He\u2019ll go with him. <\/line> John Bolton, front page of the New York Sun, in the New York Sun today, is suggesting that Kofi\u2019s whole staff go, that everybody working with Kofi fly the coop so that whoever the next secretary general is can put together his own staff. I think the United Nations is something we have to suffer. I think it\u2019s something we have to tolerate and put up with. And I, frankly, I don\u2019t know — it would be difficult here, particularly in recent years, to chronicle where they\u2019ve ever been helpful to us, in a real sense. My God, UN couldn\u2019t do anything — we are the UN when it comes to really solving problems. Otherwise they\u2019re just obstacles to everything, and it\u2019s no different than Madeleine Albright\u2019s view. They\u2019re upset that we\u2019re the lone superpower. They\u2019re upset at our prosperity. They don\u2019t think it\u2019s fair, it isn\u2019t right, and they\u2019re trying to whittle us down to size in the ways that they know best how to do. Actually, you\u2019ve taken most of my points, but I\u2019d like to make two points about the Malloch Brown statement. First of all, Bolton said it was a very, very grave mistake and it was just illegitimate. And his comments about it being an attack on the American people is absolutely correct. The second point that I\u2019d like to make is that he identified the fact that Malloch Brown as well as Kofi Annan are international civil servants and that\u2019s something that I think people tend to forget. They treat Kofi Annan like a head of state, and he is really nothing more than an administrator, and you\u2019re absolutely right, we should have gotten rid of him a long time ago, and we need to clean house at the end of this term if not before.<\/line>RUSH: It is typical, too. Here\u2019s Kofi, you\u2019re right, he\u2019s not a head of state, but acts like one and is accorded that status by most around the world, not in the United States. And the idea that he is nothing more than an administrator and should be gotten rid of, I guarantee you that anybody else who would have been involved in something like the oil-for-food program, with that kind of documented corruption and the absolute incompetence of Mohammed ElBaradei\u2019s outfit, the International Atomic Energy Agency and so forth, you can\u2019t even criticize these people. And that\u2019s what Malloch Brown is essentially saying. “We are above criticism. We don\u2019t like Mr. Rush Limbaugh, Fox News daring to attack our integrity and honor.” Let me tell you something. Let me ask you people a question here, how many of you, and how many people on my staff have sold young women into prostitution? <\/line><\/p>\n

How many of my staff took money and oil from Saddam Hussein? How many of my staff opposed defending the Rwandans who are being slaughtered while the United Nations was watching? I haven\u2019t done anything of the sort, and they can sit there and portray — nor has anybody at Fox News engaged in any of this kind of activity. I mean this is just — to me, folks, I wish I knew a better way to say this, it\u2019s just typical. I actually think it\u2019s born of a frustration. I secretly think that all of these libs, I don\u2019t care where they are, wish they had one-tenth of the power that people like me and my cohorts on talk radio on the right and Fox News have, and the reason they don\u2019t is because they do not have the ability nor the respect for you to actually engage you. It\u2019s sort of like the rift that exists on this immigration business in the conservative movement. <\/line>You have the Weekly Standard crowd and others inside the Beltway who think McCain is the cat\u2019s meow, who think immigration reform as written by the Senate is the cat\u2019s meow, and they\u2019re all excited, and they are disdainful of all of us who don\u2019t see it their way. Now, at the root of their disdain and disappointment is the fact that they\u2019re in the minority on this. They\u2019ve got their magazines and they\u2019ve got their TV shows, but somehow they haven\u2019t been able to influence you on this, they haven\u2019t been able to persuade you. So they\u2019ve given up on even trying to do that. They seek to influence policy makers because they believe that it\u2019s policy makers who make the country work. Well, I believe that it\u2019s you. I believe that it\u2019s the American people who make the country work. It is the American people who, in the final analysis — and there are exceptions, of course. We always have to fight these things — the American people generally get what they want. If the majority of people wants Bush to be president, it will happen. <\/line> If a majority of people want a Wal-Mart store in their neighborhood, it\u2019s going to happen at some point. Now, I know you\u2019ve got decisions like Kelo and eminent domain. But you wait. Before it\u2019s all said and done, that\u2019s going to get fixed, too, and not because a bunch of policy makers and editorial writers and pointy-headed elites do it. You the American people are going to get fed up with it at some point and make sure it gets fixed by virtue of your power at the ballot box. Ditto illegal immigration. They can sit there up in Washington and come up with all these pointy-headed intellectual elitist ideas insulated from reality as they are, and we\u2019ll just see how that turns out at some point. As I say, there are exceptions to it. <\/line>I just got this story. It\u2019s from the Rapid City Journal newspaper. “Wal-Mart appeared headed to an overwhelming victory Tuesday for a zoning change that clears the way for a new Wal-Mart Supercenter to be built on U.S. Highway 16 south of Rapid City. At 10:30 p.m., with about 79 percent of precincts reporting, there were 7,292 votes in favor of Ordinance 5083 and 3,144 ‘no\u2019 votes. The ordinance changes the zoning of 54 acres of land from general agriculture to general commercial. Changing the zoning will allow Wal-Mart to build a second store at the intersection of Highway 16 and Sammis Trail ? a prospect that generated controversy and considerable community debate for more than a year and a half.” Now, for the last I don\u2019t know how many years, the Drive-By Media and the Democratic Party has been trying to assault Wal-Mart and convince all of you that Wal-Mart is bad for America. <\/line><\/p>\n

They have written columns with just that title. They have written news stories. They have had television expos?s on how Wal-Mart is bad for America, Wal-Mart damaging the cities of America. And yet the people of Rapid City said, screw that, and screw you, by massive percentages. So the result here will be, amongst the pointy-headed elites, you in South Dakota are stupid. You don\u2019t know what\u2019s good for you. You don\u2019t know what you really want. If you were smart, you really wouldn\u2019t want this. Then they will tell themselves that somehow the election was bought off, that some Wal-Mart conspiracy team just frightened them into voting for it, because only governments know what\u2019s really best for the people. Only the policy makers and their buddies outside government know what\u2019s good for the American people, and ditto the United Nations. Only those thugs and dictators that make up this august body know what\u2019s good for their own people. <\/line>You sure as hell don\u2019t know what\u2019s good for you. And that\u2019s why I say, criticism from this clown, Mark Malloch Brown, is just common, and you know, gives me an opportunity to restate why all this stuff exists the way it does. But honestly, folks, I\u2019ve long ago surrendered the ability of anybody to offend me. It just doesn\u2019t happen. Plus, as I say, this stuff happens so much, it\u2019s part and parcel of my job, that to get upset about it would be stupid. <\/line>BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/line>RUSH: You know, Mr. Snerdley still can\u2019t believe that I\u2019m not offended by this. How many times have I told all of you? These are signs we are winning. Singled out like this, do they not have any idea what they\u2019re actually doing? What does all this really mean? It means that a free press and free talk radio are a pain in the ass to corrupt, undemocratic, dictator-loving bureaucracies like the United Nations. And they want the US government to go out and actually defend the United Nations against assaults on it being made in the free press in this country. Hey, UN, why don\u2019t you defend yourselves? If it\u2019s that easy to do, Mr. Malloch Brown, why don\u2019t you mount a famous PR campaign to defend the United Nations? The fact of the matter is this, frankly, kind of honors me, folks. My dad would not believe this. <\/line><\/p>\n
