Though John Kerry voted in October 2002 for military action in Iraq, he later voted against funding our soldiers.<\/line> SENATE CLERK: Mr. Kerry?<\/line>VOICE: “No.” Body armor for troops in combat.<\/line>SENATE CLERK: Mr. Kerry?<\/line>VOICE: “No.” Higher combat pay.<\/line>SENATE CLERK: Mr. Kerry?<\/line>VOICE: “No.” And better health care for reservists and their families.<\/line>SENATE CLERK: Mr. Kerry?<\/line>VOICE: “No.” Wrong on defense. <\/line>RUSH: John Kerry. So Kerry is all upset about this. He\u2019s very upset about the way his vote has been portrayed accurately in the Bush ad, so here\u2019s what he said yesterday on the campaign trail in West Virginia.<\/line>KERRY: The Republican attack machine has welcomed me to West Virginia today with another distortion. I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it.<\/line>RUSH: That\u2019s your man, Democrats. “I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it.” Oh yeah, I\u2019ll play it again — and I\u2019ve even gone back here. I found out what he voted against and what he voted for on the same bill. Here he is. Is it ready to go up there, Mike? Yeah, here it is again, folks.<\/line>KERRY: The Republican attack machine has welcomed me to West Virginia today with another distortion. I actually did vote for the $87 billion, before I voted against it.<\/line>RUSH: Let\u2019s listen to this one more time. We\u2019ll go to a commercial break and I\u2019ll come back and tell you what voted for and against both times in the same bill.<\/line>KERRY: The Republican attack machine has welcomed me to West Virginia today with another distortion. I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it.<\/line>RUSH: (Laughing) And he thinks, folks, he thinks that this is a credit to his actions. He wouldn\u2019t say this if he didn\u2019t thnk it helped him.<\/line>COMMERCIAL BREAK<\/line><\/p>\n

RUSH: I tell you what. Let me hear that ad again. The ad is just fabulous, and then we\u2019ll follow with what Kerry said. We\u2019ll explain all this. John Kerry arrives in West Virginia for a slam-dunk primary. If he\u2019s going to West Virginia, folks, there\u2019s something wrong here. He\u2019s going to West Virginia, and he\u2019s tied in polls in Pennsylvania, and you couple all the gaffes that he has made this week. This is a campaign in trouble, and they\u2019ve called a halt to it, and he\u2019s going to go out to Sun Valley where he has a — well, his wife has — a home next to George Soros, going to go out there for five days for some vacation time, try to retool this, and figure out how to proceed here without making himself look like Howard Dean II. And, by the way, Howard Dean has gotten back in the mix. Thank goodness for this. He said something just outrageous. He may as well have said that George Bush is a terrorist, with his latest pronouncement. All that coming up, and here\u2019s this ad that sent Kerry off into a tizzy.<\/line>(Replaying of Bush ad.)<\/line>RUSH: Okay, so Kerry has to defend himself when he gets into the thriving metropolis of Charleston, West Virginia last night and has this to say at a town meeting.<\/line>KERRY: The Republican attack machine has welcomed me to West Virginia today with another distortion. I actually did vote for the $87 billion before I voted against it.<\/line> RUSH: He voted for the bill before he voted against it. He wants credit for doing both things! So, let\u2019s take the opposition first. Let\u2019s take this in reverse order. He actually opposed the $87 billion, and this $87 billion was to fund troop operations in Iraq once they were there, and he opposed the $87 billion because he wanted more countries to contribute and didn\u2019t like the Bush plan. He said he “opposed the $87 billion package for Iraq because he disagreed with the way the Bush administration handled the conflict and wanted to enlist the help of more countries in securing the peace in Iraq.” All right, that\u2019s why he voted against it. <\/line>So, then why did he vote for it, which he did? He said he voted for it before he voted against it. Well, he voted for the same bill because it would take tax cuts from the rich to pay for it, he thought. “‘They didn\u2019t have the state-of-the-art body armor at the moment they went in,\u2019 Kerry said, adding he supported an amendment that would have paid for the $87 billion by repealing tax cuts for the most wealthy Americans.” So, senator, where did the troops figure in any of this? You vote against the bill because you don\u2019t like the Bush plan, and you don\u2019t think there was enough foreign involvement. Then you turn around and you vote for it because you agree with an amendment that is going to fund it by repealing tax cuts for the rich. That\u2019s his rationale. <\/line>Now, his answer, if he were sitting here, if I were talking to him, he would say, “Well, it\u2019s obvious, uh, Mr. Limbaugh, that you don\u2019t understand how things happen in the United States Senate, and I could understand that. You\u2019ve never run for office. You never put yourself on the line. You didn\u2019t go to Vietnam like I did! You don\u2019t know what life is really like out there at the top. You don\u2019t know what it\u2019s like at the bottom. You don\u2019t know how things work in the Senate. You have no right to question me! I\u2019m outta here.” That would be his answer, but he wouldn\u2019t answer it other than to say, “I voted for it before I voted against it.” Now, they had a discussion of this ad on Hardball last night. Chris Matthews and Andrea Mitchell, it\u2019s audio sound bite number 3. Listen to Andrea Mitchell try to defend Kerry.<\/line><\/p>\n

MITCHELL: Now that is a complete distortion, Kerry would say, and anybody who really covered the $87 billion supplemental has to agree —<\/line>MATTHEWS: Were those items in there?<\/line>MITCHELL: — it\u2019s a complete distortion. They were in there but he was voting against one part of the bill.<\/line>MITCHELL: But didn\u2019t he vote against finals? Didn\u2019t he vote against finals<\/line>FUND: — trying to have it both ways?<\/line>MATTHEWS: Well, then he voted against all those elements.<\/line>MITCHELL: He voted against those elements in the supplemental, but he was voting against it as a protest, he said.<\/line>MATTHEWS: Well, that\u2019s what he says. That\u2019s his spin, but he\u2019s nailed here, I think. By the way, you said before that was a hell of a tough ad.<\/line>MITCHELL: It\u2019s a very tough ad.<\/line>MATTHEWS: I think it\u2019s devastating.<\/line>MITCHELL: First of all it\u2019s a simulation of a Senate vote.<\/line>RUSH: So? Most ads are simulations! Andrea Mitchell doing her best to defend Kerry. “Well, he said this. He said this!” and Matthews, “It\u2019s just his spin. he voted against the final, didn\u2019t he?” “Yes.” “Okay. I don\u2019t care about anything else!” He voted against it, but he voted for it when he thought that tax cuts for the rich might be repealed in order to pay for it. So there you go Democrats; there you go, libs. There\u2019s your guy. On another issue, he\u2019s on both sides. He\u2019s for it and he\u2019s against it, and in this case, we still don\u2019t know what he thought of funding the troops!
