RUSH: This presidential campaign is unlike anything anybody has seen, and it\u2019s really hard to handicap.  I also saw something else. I think this was Friday.  As I was flying back home from my two-day business trip, I think it was Friday.  Dana Perino — I was telling Mr. Snerdley, did you see this?  You didn\u2019t see.  It was on The Five, I think.  Or it might have been a show on Fox where she he was a guest analyst or commentator.  But she delivered a commentary or she made a statement that she just looked really in pain. <\/p>\n

It looked like the last thing she wanted to say, and what she told people was, if you think the polls are wrong, they\u2019re not.  The polls are right.  And you had better get with the program and understand it and admit it, otherwise you\u2019re lying to yourself.  She said, I did the same thing back in 2012.  I thought the polls were undersampled of Republicans, oversampled Democrats.  I thought everything was wrong. I thought Romney was gonna win by six points at least. I thought the polls had it all wrong for a host of reasons, and the polls ended up being dead-on right.  And I\u2019m never doing that again, she said. I\u2019m never gonna look at polling data and automatically throw it out, particularly when you\u2019ve got 34, 35 polls right now that show a Hillary victory of one size or another. She said the polls are not wrong. <\/line><\/p>\n

She looked at the camera said (paraphrasing), “I will never lie to you.  I can\u2019t lie to you now.”  And you could tell she was uncomfortable with it because the assumption was that her audience doesn\u2019t want to hear this.  I mean, she\u2019s on Fox News.  And the assumption in her heart I\u2019m sure was, the audience wants to hear every day, “These polls are wrong, you don\u2019t fall for it, you keep your chin up, keep thinking positive, we\u2019re gonna show everybody.”  She couldn\u2019t do that anymore, she said.  The polls are right.  It\u2019s not looking good. <\/p>\n

Well, there is movement in the polls, folks.  And even old Nate Silver, the FiveThirtyEight, <\/a>is saying this thing\u2019s not over yet.  Trump is beginning to trend in the right direction.  Other poll analysts are pointing this out as well but then asking, is it too late for this?  Is there enough time, can Trump continue this trend, can Trump continue to tighten the race? <\/p>\n

And then there are a couple of polls that show Trump up. That new LA Times poll done with USC has Trump up, after being down by three.  This is the poll the week of the Democrat convention Trump was up seven. Lost that lead through the Democrat convention and a week and a half after. Then it tied, then Hillary went ahead by three in that poll.  Now Trump\u2019s back up by half point. <\/p>\n

This is the poll that has 3,000 people, 400 of whom never change, and they take the poll every day, report the results at midnight every night on the Left Coast so it\u2019s three a.m. Eastern time when they update it, and Trump\u2019s back in the lead by a half point or a point.  There\u2019s a Rasmussen poll<\/a>, a couple of others I think that have Trump up anywhere from a point to three points. But the vast majority still have Hillary winning.  And it\u2019s fascinating, Hillary\u2019s not doing anything. <\/line><\/p>\n

Hillary\u2019s not going on TV. She\u2019s not doing any campaign appearances, but it is fascinating, they\u2019re almost panicked in the Hillary camp about fundraising.  They\u2019re sending out fundraising letters as though they\u2019re in the middle of a crisis.  It\u2019s weird.  But you know what it\u2019s clear, folks?  You\u2019ve got the Democrats, there\u2019s a story in the Washington Post, Hillary\u2019s already starting to work on her presidential agenda.  Hillary\u2019s donors and Hillary\u2019s campaign advisers and Hillary\u2019s potential cabinet members are all getting together and starting to plan out the presidential agenda. <\/p>\n

In their minds, it\u2019s over.  They have it won, and the way they\u2019re gonna make sure it stays won is Hillary is gonna hibernate.  She\u2019s not gonna show up because they know the more she shows up, the greater the chance are her poll numbers will decline. So she\u2019s not gonna do press conferences. She\u2019s not gonna do rallies. She doesn\u2019t have to.  The media is her campaign. <\/p>\n

The media destroys Donald Trump for her every day for free.  She doesn\u2019t have to spend any money.  Of course, she\u2019s going to, she is, and she\u2019s raising money, but the media is her campaign.  The New York Times, ABC, CBS, NBC, something that I pointed out here weeks ago, Hillary doesn\u2019t have to do anything.  Her campaign is the American mainstream media.  <\/p>\n

BREAK TRANSCRIPT<\/p>\n

RUSH:  Well, the next call I wanted to take the guy\u2019s gone.  Columbus, Ohio.  It was time to take the question. His point is Trump has such a huge following, there are thousands and thousands of people at his appearances, and not only are there thousands and thousands and thousands of people, the anti-Trump people show up and try to agitate.  I mean, Trump is huge wherever he goes.  How can the polls be right with all these people out there? <\/p>\n

People continue to ask the question, they continue to hope that electric crowds and large crowds, at every rally, every rally, if Trump goes to a 20,000-seat venue, it fills, 10,000, it fills.  And there are people on the outside trying to get in.  And yet none of that seems reflective in the polls, although it is.  Trump\u2019s numbers, his support numbers are made up of those people. <\/p>\n

The only way to explain this — well, not the only way.  The best way to explain it is that you look at 2012, the same thing was happening with Romney, particularly in the final week.  Romney, I mean, the crowds were going bonkers. They were humongous, indoor, outdoor, and everybody said, “There\u2019s something happening here, there is something going on.  The polls are not catching this,” and it didn\u2019t mean anything.  Romney lost by a solid six, close to it, exactly what most of the polls said would happen. <\/p>\n

Even if you have a rally of 20,000 people, what percentage of the voting population is 20,000 people?  It\u2019s really tiny.  You want to hear another statistic?  I don\u2019t know if this is still true, but back in 1982, the NFL sent around a poster to all of the franchises to post throughout the marketing department just to keep everything in perspective.  The poster said, “If you know that more people bowl in a week than attend NFL games in a season, then you know America.”  And it was the way the NFL was trying to convey: Don\u2019t get so full of yourselves here.  I mean, we\u2019ve got a lot of room for growth. <\/line><\/p>\n

Now, the NFL\u2019s attracting 50, 75,000 people seemingly to every game, every week.  And yet bowling is bigger, because you never see it.  It doesn\u2019t generate crowds in those numbers at venues.  But the percentages of people that show up to an event are minuscule compared to the overall population.  And that\u2019s why it\u2019s called anecdotal.  There\u2019s nothing scientific in projecting — you don\u2019t know how many of those 20,000 at a Trump rally are actually gonna vote, you don\u2019t know how many are gonna vote for him, you don\u2019t know any of that.  All you know is the size.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
