RUSH: Let\u2019s go back even further to the Grooveyard of Forgotten Hits, audio sound bites.\u00a0 This is August 12th, 1980, in New York City at the Democrat National Convention and Teddy Kennedy.<\/p>\n

KENNEDY: \u00a0I congratulate President Carter on his victory here.\u00a0 I am confident that the Democratic Party will reunite on the basis of Democratic principles and that together we will march towards a Democratic victory in 1980.\u00a0 For me, a few hours ago, this campaign came to an end.\u00a0 For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die.<\/p>\n

RUSH:\u00a0 Translation: “Screw you, Carter!” So here, Jimmy Carter did not receive Ted Kennedy\u2019s endorsement.\u00a0 This was 1980. That was a great campaign.\u00a0 I don\u2019t know how many of you were old enough or even born, but there was a great moment in the \u201980 campaign.\u00a0 Jimmy Carter was a disaster, was an absolute disaster. He was so bad that Ted Kennedy thought that even he could be elected president.<\/p>\n

Even with all of his Mary Jo Kopechne and Chappaquiddick Bridge, all of that, even he thought he could be elected president.\u00a0 He granted an interview to the iconic Roger Mudd of CBS News who asked a very simple question every candidate gets.\u00a0 “Senator, why do you want to be president?” Uhhhh.\u00a0 Dream shall never die? Blah, blah.\u00a0 Had no answer.\u00a0 He had no answer, not even the slightest idea.\u00a0 “What do you want to do when you become president?<\/p>\n

“What do you think needs to be done?”\u00a0 Blah, blah, blah.\u00a0 No answer.\u00a0 It was clear he\u2019s campaigning for president \u2019cause he\u2019s a Kennedy, and that was enough.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t have to have a reason beyond that.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t have to have an agenda beyond that, just the fact that his name was Kennedy.\u00a0 Now, a lot of people are talking about Reagan and Ford 1976.\u00a0 I was in Kansas City in 1976.\u00a0 That convention… You think this was bad last night?<\/p>\n

At that convention, they had fistfights that broke out on the floor!\u00a0 It was at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City.\u00a0 And there were fistfights.\u00a0 Nelson Rockefeller was practically inebriated every night.\u00a0 One night he got so mad, he walked out of there, went to an art gallery over at Plaza 3 and had dinner and said, “Screw it!”\u00a0 I mean, they were throwing fits.\u00a0 It was brutal in the \u201976 convention in Kansas City.\u00a0 I\u2019m gonna take a break.\u00a0 We\u2019ll come back, have some sound bites.\u00a0 It\u2019s all about, did Reagan or did Reagan not endorse Ford in that.<\/p>\n
